Title A precision measurement of charm dimuon production in neutrino interactions from the NOMAD experiment Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
Volume 876 Issue (up) 2 Pages 339-375
Keywords Charm production; Strange quark content of the nucleon; Dimuon charm production; Neutrino interactions
Abstract We present our new measurement of the cross-section for charm dimuon production in neutrino iron interactions based upon the full statistics collected by the NOMAD experiment. After background subtraction we observe 15 344 charm dimuon events, providing the largest sample currently available. The analysis exploits the large inclusive charged current sample – about 9 x 10(6) events after all analysis cuts – and the high resolution NOMAD detector to constrain the total systematic uncertainty on the ratio of charm dimuon to inclusive Charged Current (CC) cross-sections to similar to 2%. We also perform a fit to the NOMAD data to extract the charm production parameters and the strange quark sea content of the nucleon within the NLO QCD approximation. We obtain a value of m(c)(m(c)) = 1.159 +/- 0.075 GeV/c(2) for the running mass of the charm quark in the (MS) over bar scheme and a strange quark sea suppression factor of kappa(s) = 0.591 +/- 0.019 at Q(2) = 20 GeV2/c(2).

Title Gluon Regge trajectory at two loops from Lipatov's high energy effective action Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
Volume 876 Issue (up) 2 Pages 453-472
Keywords
Abstract We present the derivation of the two-loop gluon Regge trajectory using Lipatov's high energy effective action and a direct evaluation of Feynman diagrams. Using a gauge invariant regularization of high energy divergences by deforming the light-cone vectors of the effective action, we determine the two-loop self-energy of the reggeized gluon, after computing the master integrals involved using the Mellin-Barnes representations technique. The self-energy is further matched to QCD through a recently proposed subtraction prescription. The Regge trajectory of the gluon is then defined through renormalization of the reggeized gluon propagator with respect to high energy divergences. Our result is in agreement with previous computations in the literature, providing a non-trivial test of the effective action and the proposed subtraction and renormalization framework.

Title Measurement of the effective B-S(0) -> J/psi K-S(0) lifetime Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
Volume 873 Issue (up) 2 Pages 275-292
Keywords
Abstract This paper reports the first measurement of the effective B-S(0) -> J/psi K-S(0) lifetime and an updated measurement of its time-integrated branching fraction. Both measurements are performed with a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) of pp collisions, recorded by the LHCb experiment in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The results are: tau(eff)(J/psi KS0) = 1.75 +/- 0.12 (stat) +/- 0.07 (syst) ps and B(B-S(0) -> J/psi K-S(0)) = (1.97 +/- 0.23) x 10(-5). For the latter measurement, the uncertainty includes both statistical and systematic sources.

Title Measurement of Neutrino Oscillation Parameters from Muon Neutrino Disappearance with an Off-Axis Beam Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 111 Issue (up) 21 Pages 211803 - 7pp
Keywords
Abstract The T2K Collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to 3.01 x 10(20) protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, 205 +/- 17 (syst) events are expected to be detected while only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum, assuming three neutrino flavors and normal mass hierarchy yields a best-fit mixing angle sin(2) (theta(23)) = 0.514 +/- 0.082 and mass splitting vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar = 2.44(-0.15)(+0.17) x 10(-3) eV(2)/c(4). Our result corresponds to the maximal oscillation disappearance probability.

Title Bianchi spaces and their three-dimensional isometries as S-expansions of two-dimensional isometries Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of Physics A Abbreviated Journal J. Phys. A
Volume 46 Issue (up) 22 Pages 225201 - 24pp
Keywords
Abstract In this paper we show that certain three-dimensional isometry algebras, specifically those of type I, II, III and V (according to Bianchi's classification), can be obtained as expansions of the isometries in two dimensions. In particular, we use the so-called S-expansionmethod, which makes use of the finite Abelian semigroups, because it is the most general procedure known until now. Also, it is explicitly shown why it is impossible to obtain the algebras of type IV, VI-IX as expansions from the isometry algebras in two dimensions. All the results are checked with computer programs. This procedure shows that the problem of how to relate, by an expansion, two Lie algebras of different dimensions can be entirely solved. In particular, the procedure can be generalized to higher dimensions, which could be useful for diverse physical applications, as we discuss in our conclusions.

Title First Observation of CP Violation in the Decays of B-s(0) Mesons Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 110 Issue (up) 22 Pages 221601 - 9pp
Keywords
Abstract Using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) and collected by LHCb in 2011 at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, we report the measurement of direct CP violation in B-s(0) -> K-pi(+) decays, A(CP) (B-s(0) -> K-pi(+)) = 0.27 +/- 0.04(stat) +/- 0.01(syst), with significance exceeding 5 standard deviations. This is the first observation of CP violation in the decays of B-s(0) mesons. Furthermore, we provide an improved determination of direct CP violation in B-0 -> K+pi(-) decays, A(CP)(B-0 -> K+pi(-) ) = -0.080 +/- 0.007(stat) +/- 0.003(syst), which is the most precise measurement of this quantity to date.

Title Determination of the X(3872) Meson Quantum Numbers Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 110 Issue (up) 22 Pages 222001 - 8pp
Keywords
Abstract The quantum numbers of the X(3872) meson are determined to be J(PC) = 1(++) based on angular correlations in B+ -> X(3872)K+ decays, where X(3872) -> pi(+) pi(-) j/psi and J/psi -> pi(+) mu(-). The data correspond to 1.0 fb(-1) of pp collisions collected by the LHCb detector. The only alternative assignment allowed by previous measurements J(PC) = 2(-+) is rejected with a confidence level equivalent to more than 8 Gaussian standard deviations using a likelihood-ratio test in the full angular phase space. This result favors exotic explanations of the X(3872) state.

Title Measurement of top quark polarization in top-antitop events from proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 111 Issue (up) 23 Pages 232002 - 19pp
Keywords
Abstract This Letter presents measurements of the polarization of the top quark in top-antitop quark pair events, using 4: 7 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at root s = 7 TeV. Final states containing one or two isolated leptons ( electrons or muons) and jets are considered. Two measurements of alpha P-l, the product of the leptonic spin-analyzing power and the top quark polarization, are performed assuming that the polarization is introduced by either a CP conserving or a maximally CP violating production process. The measurements obtained, alpha P-l(CPC) = -0: 035 +/- 0: 014(stat) +/- 0: 037(syst) and alpha P-l(CPV) = 0: 020 +/- 0: 016(stat)(-0.017)(+0.013)(syst), are in good agreement with the standard model prediction of negligible top quark polarization.

Title First Measurement of the CP-Violating Phase in B-s(0) -> phi phi Decays Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 110 Issue (up) 24 Pages 241802 - 8pp
Keywords
Abstract A first flavor-tagged measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in B-s(0) -> phi phi decays is presented. In this decay channel, the CP-violating weak phase arises due to CP violation in the interference between B-s(0)-(B) over bar (0)(s) mixing and the b -> s (s) over bars gluonic penguin decay amplitude. Using a sample of pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) and collected at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the LHCb detector, 880 B-s(0) -> phi phi signal decays are obtained. The CP-violating phase is measured to be in the interval [-2.46, -0.76] rad at a 68% confidence level. The p value of the standard model prediction is 16%.
