Title QCD corrections and long-range mechanisms of neutrinoless double beta decay Type Journal Article

Abstract Recently it has been demonstrated that QCD corrections are numerically important for short-range mechanisms (SRM) of neutrinoless double beta decay (0 nu beta beta) mediated by heavy particle exchange. This is due to the effect of color mismatch for certain effective operators, which leads to mixing between different operators with vastly different nuclear matrix elements (NMEs). In this note we analyze the QCD corrections for long-range mechanisms (LRM), due to diagrams with light-neutrino exchange between a Standard Model (V-A)chi(V-A) and a beyond the SM lepton number violating vertex. We argue that in contrast to the SRM in the LRM case, there is no operator mixing from color-mismatched operators. This is due to a combined effect of the nuclear short-range correlations and color invariance. As a result, the QCD corrections to the LRM amount to an effect no more than 60%, depending on the operator in question. Although less crucial, taken into account QCD running makes theoretical predictions for 0 nu beta beta-decay more robust also for LRM diagrams. We derive the current experimental constraints on the Wilson coefficients for all LRM effective operators.

Title Study of B-c(+) decays to the K+K-pi(+) final state and evidence for the decay B-c(+) -> chi(c0)pi(+) Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 94 Issue (down) 9 Pages 091102 - 10pp
Keywords
Abstract A study of B-c(+) -> K+K-pi(+) decays is performed for the first time using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Evidence for the decay B-c(+) -> chi(c0)(K+K-)pi(+) is reported with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations, giving sigma(B-c(+))/sigma(B+) x B(B-c(+) -> chi(c0)pi+) = (9.8(-3.0)(+3.4)(stat) +/- 0.8(stat)) x 10(-6). Here B denotes a branching fraction while sigma(B-c(+)) and sigma(B+) are the production cross sections for B-c(+) and B+ mesons. An indication of (b) over barc weak annihilation is found for the region m(K-pi(+)) < 1.834 GeV/c(2), with a significance of 2.4 standard deviations.

Title a(1)(1420) peak as the pi f(0)(980) decay mode of the a(1)(1260) Type Journal Article

Volume 94 Issue (down) 9 Pages 096015 - 9pp
Keywords
Abstract We study the decay mode of the a(1)(1260) into a pi(+) in p wave and the f(0)(980) that decays into pi(+)pi(-) in s wave. The mechanism proceeds via a triangular mechanism where the a(1)(1260) decays into K*K-, the K* decays to an external pi(+) and an internal K that fuses with the (K) over bar producing the f(0)(980) resonance. The mechanism develops a singularity at a mass of the a(1)(1260) around 1420 MeV, producing a peak in the cross section of the pp reaction, used to generate the mesonic final state, which provides a natural explanation of all the features observed in the COMPASS experiment, where a peak observed at this energy is tentatively associated to a new resonance called a(1)(1420). On the other hand, the triangular singularity studied here gives rise to a remarkable feature, where a peak is seen for a certain decay channel of a resonance at an energy about 200 MeV higher than its nominal mass.

Title Prospects for natural SUSY Type Journal Article

Abstract As we anticipate the first results of the 2016 run, we assess the discovery potential of the LHC to “natural supersymmetry.” To begin with, we explore the region of the model parameter space that can be excluded with various center-of-mass energies (13 TeV and 14 TeV) and different luminosities (20 fb(-1), 100 fb(-1), 300 fb(-1) and 3000 fb(-1)). We find that the bounds at 95% C.L. on stops vary from m((t1) over tilde) greater than or similar to 800 GeV expected this summer to m((t1) over tilde) greater than or similar to 1500 GeV at the end of the high luminosity run, while gluino bounds are expected to range from m((g) over tilde) greater than or similar to 1700 GeV to m((g) over tilde) greater than or similar to 2500 GeV over the same time period. However, more pessimistically, we find that if no signal begins to appear this summer, only a very small region of parameter space can be discovered with 5 sigma significance. For this conclusion to change, we find that both theoretical and systematic uncertainties will need to be significantly reduced.

Title Integrating out heavy particles with functional methods: a simplified framework Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 09 Issue (down) 9 Pages 156 - 26pp
Keywords Effective field theories; Beyond Standard Model
Abstract We present a systematic procedure to obtain the one-loop low-energy effective Lagrangian resulting from integrating out the heavy fields of a given ultraviolet theory. We show that the matching coefficients are determined entirely by the hard region of the functional determinant involving the heavy fields. This represents an important simplification with respect the conventional matching approach, where the full and effective theory contributions have to be computed separately and a cancellation of the infrared divergent parts has to take place. We illustrate the method with a descriptive toy model and with an extension of the Standard Model with a heavy real scalar triplet. A comparison with other schemes that have been put forward recently is also provided.

Title Dark matter interpretations of ATLAS searches for the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in root s=8 TeV proton-proton collisions Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 09 Issue (down) 9 Pages 175 - 44pp
Keywords Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments)
Abstract A selection of searches by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC for the electroweak production of SUSY particles are used to study their impact on the constraints on dark matter candidates. The searches use 20 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 8 TeV. A likelihood-driven scan of a five-dimensional effective model focusing on the gaugino-higgsino and Higgs sector of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric Standard Model is performed. This scan uses data from direct dark matter detection experiments, the relic dark matter density and precision flavour physics results. Further constraints from the ATLAS Higgs mass measurement and SUSY searches at LEP are also applied. A subset of models selected from this scan are used to assess the impact of the selected ATLAS searches in this five-dimensional parameter space. These ATLAS searches substantially impact those models for which the mass m((chi) over tilde (0)(1)) of the lightest neutralino is less than 65 GeV, excluding 86% of such models. The searches have limited impact on models with larger m((chi) over tilde (0)(1)) due to either heavy electroweakinos or compressed mass spectra where the mass splittings between the produced particles and the lightest supersymmetric particle is small.

Keywords Branching fraction; Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments); QCD
Abstract The ratio of branching fractions R-K/pi = B (B-c(+) -> J/psi K+)/B(B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+)) is measured with pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7TeV and 8TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1). It is found to be R-K/pi = 0.079 +/- 0.007 +/- 0.003, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement is consistent with the previous LHCb result, while the uncertainties are significantly reduced.

Title Search for supersymmetry in a final state containing two photons and missing transverse momentum in root s=13 TeV pp collisions at the LHC using the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Abstract A search has been made for supersymmetry in a final state containing two photons and missing transverse momentum using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search makes use of 3.2 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2015. Using a combination of data-driven and Monte-Carlo-based approaches, the Standard Model background is estimated to be 0.27(-0.10)(+0.22) events. No events are observed in the signal region; considering the expected background and its uncertainty, this observation implies a model-independent 95 % CL upper limit of 0.93 fb (3.0 events) on the visible cross section due to physics beyond the Standard Model. In the context of a generalized model of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking with a bino-like next-to-lightest super-symmetric particle, this leads to a lower limit of 1650 GeV on the mass of a degenerate octet of gluino states, independent of the mass of the lighter bino-like neutralino.

Year 2016 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 09 Issue (down) 9 Pages 136 - 33pp
Keywords Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments)
Abstract A measurement of the production cross-section of Z bosons in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV is presented using dimuon and dielectron final states in LHCb data. The cross-section is measured for leptons with pseudorapidities in the range 2.0 < eta < 4.5, transverse momenta pT > 20 GeV and dilepton invariant mass in the range 60 < m(ll) < 120 GeV. The integrated cross-section from averaging the two final states is sigma(ll)(Z) = 194.3+/-0.9+/-3.3+/-7.6 pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is due to systematic effects, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. In addition, differential cross-sections are measured as functions of the Z boson rapidity, transverse momentum and the angular variable phi(eta)*.

Abstract A study of the decays B-s(0) -> mu(+)mu(-) and B-0 -> mu(+)mu(-) has been performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb(-1) of 7 and 8 TeV proton-proton collisions collected with the ATLAS detector during the LHC Run 1. For the B-0 dimuon decay, an upper limit on the branching fraction is set at B(B-0 -> mu(+)mu(-)) < 4.2 x 10(-10) at 95% confidence level. For B-s(0), the branching fraction B(B-s(0) -> mu(+)mu(-)) = (0.9(-0.8)(+1.1)) x 10(-9) is measured. The results are consistent with the Standard Model expectation with a p value of 4.8%, corresponding to 2.0 standard deviations.
