Abstract: We present a model for weak charged-current induced nuclear reactions at energies of interest for current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. This model is a natural extension of the work in Refs. [1,2], where the quasielastic contribution to the inclusive electron and neutrino scattering on nuclei was analyzed. The model is based on a systematic many-body expansion of the gauge boson absorption modes that includes one, two, and even three-body mechanisms, as well as the excitation of Delta isobars. The whole scheme has no free parameters, besides those previously adjusted to the weak pion production off the nucleon cross sections in the deuteron, since all nuclear effects were set up in previous studies of photon, electron, and pion interactions with nuclei. We have discussed at length the recent charged-current quasielastic MiniBooNE cross section data, and showed that two-nucleon knockout mechanisms are essential to describing these measurements.

Abstract: The (n,gamma) cross section of Au-197 has been measured at nTOF in the resolved resonance region, up to 5 keV, with the aim of improving the accuracy in an energy range where it is not yet considered standard. The measurements were performed with two different experimental setup and detection techniques, the total energy method based on C6D6 detectors, and the total absorption calorimetry based on a 4 pi BaF2 array. By comparing the data collected with the two techniques, two accurate sets of neutron-capture yields have been obtained, which could be the basis for a new evaluation leading to an extended cross-section standard. Overall good agreement is found between the n_TOF results and evaluated cross sections, with some significant exceptions for small resonances. A few resonances not included in the existing databases have also been observed.

Abstract: In this work we consider the renormalization of the chiral two-pion exchange potential with explicit Delta excitations for nucleon-nucleon scattering at next-to-leading (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (N(2)LO). Because of the singular nature of the chiral potentials, correlations between different partial waves are generated. In particular, we show that two-body scattering by a short distance power like singular attractive interaction can be renormalized in all partial waves with a single counterterm, provided the singularities are identical. A parallel statement holds in the presence of tensor interactions when the eigenpotentials in the coupled channel problem also coincide. Although this construction reduces the total number of counterterms to 11 in the case of nucleon-nucleon scattering with chiral two-pion exchange interactions with Delta degrees of freedom, the differences in the scattering phases as compared to the case with the uncorrelated partial-wave renormalization become smaller as the angular momentum is increased in the elastic scattering region.

Abstract: Heavy neutron-rich nuclei were populated via the fragmentation of a E/A = 1 GeV (208)(82)Pb beam. Secondary fragments were separated and identified and subsequently implanted in a passive stopper. By the detection of delayed gamma rays, isomeric decays associated with these nuclei have been identified. A total of 49 isomers were detected, with the majority of them observed for the first time. The newly discovered isomers are in (204,205)(80)Hg, (201,202,204,205)(79)Au, (197,203,204)(78)Pt, (195,199-203)(77)Ir, (193,197-199)(76)Os, (196)(75)Re, (190,191)(74)W, and (189)(73)Ta. Possible level schemes are constructed and the structure of the nuclei discussed. To aid the interpretation, shell-model as well as BCS calculations were performed.

Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross section of (236)U was measured at the neutron Time-of-Flight (nTOF) facility at CERN relative to the standard (235)U(n, f) cross section for neutron energies ranging from above thermal to several MeV. The measurement, covering the full range simultaneously, was performed with a fast ionization chamber, taking advantage of the high resolution of the nTOF spectrometer. The n_TOF results confirm that the first resonance at 5.45 eV is largely overestimated in some nuclear data libraries. The resonance triplet around 1.2 keV was measured with high resolution and resonance parameters were determined with good accuracy. Resonances at high energy have also been observed and characterized and different values for the cross section are provided for the region between 10 keV and the fission threshold. The present work indicates various shortcomings of the current nuclear data libraries in the subthreshold region and provides the basis for an accurate re-evaluation of the (236)U(n, f) cross section, which is of great relevance for the development of emerging or innovative nuclear reactor technologies.

Abstract: The. decays of neutron-rich Ca isotopes around Ca-48 were measured at Legnaro National Laboratory with the PRISMA-CLARA setup, using the heavy-ion transfer reactions Ca-48 on Ni-64 and Ca-48 on Pb-208 at approximate to 6 MeV/A. The work shows the feasibility to perform full in-beam gamma spectroscopy with heavy-ion transfer reactions (in terms of angular distributions, polarizations, and lifetimes analysis), providing a method that can be further exploited in the future with heavy targets and radioactive beams. For the one-neutron transfer channels, Ca-49 and Ca-47, shell-model and particle-vibration coupling calculations are used to understand the nature of the states. In particular, in both nuclei evidence is found for particle-vibration coupled states based on the 3(-) phonon of Ca-48. In the two-neutron transfer channels, Ca-46 and Ca-50, the experimental data are in global agreement with predictions based on full fp shell-model calculations.

Abstract: The high-spin structure of the nucleus Pd-104 was studied through the Zr-96(C-13,5n) reaction at incident energies of 51 and 58MeV, using the Euroball IV gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the DIAMANT charged-particle array. Several new medium- and high-spin bands were revealed. The already known positive-parity yrast and the negative-parity cascades were extended up to E-x similar to 13, similar to 11, and similar to 9 MeV with I-pi = (26(+)), I-pi = (23(-)), and (20(-)), respectively. The deduced band structures were compared with Woods-Saxon total Routhian surface (TRS) calculations. In addition, non-yrast low-lying positive-parity bands were identified, which were assigned to soft gamma-vibrational excitations.

Abstract: The neutron capture cross section of Np-237 was measured between 0.7 and 500 eV at the CERN n_TOF facility using the 4 pi BaF2 Total Absorption Calorimeter. The experimental capture yield was extracted minimizing all the systematic uncertainties and was analyzed together with the most reliable transmission data available using the SAMMY code. The result is a complete set of individual as well as average resonance parameters [D-0 = 0.56(2) eV, <Gamma(gamma)> = 40.9(18) meV, 10(4)S(0) = 0.98(6), R' = 9.8(6) fm]. The capture cross section obtained in this work is in overall agreement with the evaluations and the data of Weston and Todd [Nucl. Sci. Eng. 79, 184 (1981)], thus showing sizable differences with respect to previous data from Scherbakov et al. [J. Nucl. Sci. Technol. 42, 135 (2005)] and large discrepancies with data Kobayashi et al. [J. Nucl. Sci. Technol. 39, 111 (2002)]. The results indicate that a new evaluation combining the present capture data with reliable transmission data would allow reaching an accuracy better than 4%, in line with the uncertainty requirements of the nuclear data community for the design and operation of current and future nuclear devices.

Abstract: We have measured the neutron capture cross sections of the stable magnesium isotopes Mg-24,Mg-25,Mg-26 in the energy range of interest to the s process using the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture events from a natural metal sample and from samples enriched in Mg-25 and Mg-26 were recorded using the total energy method based on (C6H6)-H-2 detectors. Neutron resonance parameters were extracted by a simultaneous resonance shape analysis of the present capture data and existing transmission data on a natural isotopic sample. Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections for the three isotopes were calculated up to thermal energies of 100 keV and their impact on s-process analyses was investigated. At 30 keV the new values of the stellar cross section for Mg-24, Mg-25, and Mg-26 are 3.8 +/- 0.2 mb, 4.1 +/- 0.6 mb, and 0.14 +/- 0.01 mb, respectively.

Abstract: Scattering of protons of several hundred MeV is a promising new spectroscopic tool for the study of electric dipole strength in nuclei. A case study of Pb-208 shows that, at very forward angles, J(pi) = 1(-) states are strongly populated via Coulomb excitation. A separation from nuclear excitation of other modes is achieved by a multipole decomposition analysis of the experimental cross sections based on theoretical angular distributions calculated within the quasiparticle-phonon model. The B(E1) transition strength distribution is extracted for excitation energies up to 9MeV; that is, in the region of the so-called pygmy dipole resonance (PDR). The Coulomb-nuclear interference shows sensitivity to the underlying structure of the E1 transitions, which allows for the first time an experimental extraction of the electromagnetic transition strength and the energy centroid of the PDR.
