Abstract: Nuclear energy production is inherently tied to the management and disposal of radioactive waste. Enhancing classification and monitoring tools is therefore crucial, with significant socioeconomic implications. This paper reports on the applicability and performance of a high-efficiency, cost-effective and portable Compton camera for detecting and visualizing low-and medium-level radioactive waste from the decommissioning and regular operation of nuclear power plants. The results demonstrate the good performance of Compton imaging for this type of application, both in terms of image resolution and reduced measuring time. A technical readiness level of TRL7 has been thus achieved with this system prototype, as demonstrated with dedicated field measurements carried out at the radioactive-waste disposal plant of El Cabril (Spain) utilizing a pluarility of radioactive-waste drums from decomissioned nuclear power plants. The performance of the system has been enhanced by means of computer-vision techniques in combination with advanced Compton-image reconstruction algorithms based on Maximum-Likelihood Expectation Maximization. Finally, we also show the feasibility of 3D tomographic reconstruction from a series of relatively short measurements around the objects of interest. The potential of this imaging system to enhance nuclear waste management makes it a promising innovation for the nuclear industry.

Abstract: The scintillation properties and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) performance of the new BSO-406 (40 % organic glass scintillator and 60 % polystyrene) were investigated. We tested a cylindrical sample with dimensions of 2 x 2 inches. The study includes measurements of neutron-gamma discrimination capability, emission spectra, photoelectron yield, and the analysis of light pulse shapes originating from events related to gamma-rays and fast neutrons. The results were compared to data previously recorded using a pure Organic Glass Scintillator (BSO100), an EJ-309 liquid scintillator, and EJ-276 and M600 polyurethane-based plastic scintillators. The results show that while BSO-406 has a 40 % lower light output compared to pure OGS, it remains comparable to EJ-309, with approximately 13 000 ph/MeV. Its PSD performance, although slightly lower than that of OGS, is the best among plastic scintillators.

Abstract: In this work, we have developed and characterized a position-sensitive CLYC detector that acts as the neutron imaging layer and y-ray Compton scatterer of the novel dual Gamma-ray and Neutron Vision (GN-Vision) system, which aims at simultaneously obtaining information about the spatial origin of y-ray and neutron sources. We first investigated the performance of two large 50 x 50 mm2 monolithic CLYC crystals, 8 and 13 mm thick respectively, coupled to a pixelated SiPM in terms of energy resolution and neutron-gamma discrimination. The response of two different 95% 6Li-enriched CLYC detectors coupled to an array of 8 x 8 SiPMs was studied in comparison to the results of a conventional photo-multiplier tube. An energy resolution of about 6% with PMT and 8% with SiPMs for the 137Cs peak and a figure of merit of 3-4 for the neutron-gamma discrimination have been obtained. The spatial response of the CLYC-SiPM detector to y-rays and neutrons has also been characterized using charge modulation-based multiplexing techniques based on a diode-coupled charge division circuit. Average resolutions close to 5 mm FWHM with good linearity are obtained in the transverse crystal plane. Last, this work presents the first proof-of-concept experiments of the neutron imaging capability using a neutron pinhole collimator attached to the developed position sensitive CLYC detector.

Abstract: The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider in Japan, which currently holds the world luminosity record for electron-positron collisions, plans to upgrade its vertex detector (VXD) to operate at a target luminosity of 6 x 1035 cm-2s-1. A new pixelated vertex detector (VTX) is under development, utilizing a monolithic CMOS pixel sensor named OBELIX (Optimized BELle II pIXel). The VTX design incorporates 5-6 layers with a total material budget below 2.5% X0. All layers will employ the OBELIX, adapted from the TJ-Monopix2 sensor initially designed for the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) upgrade. The OBELIX sensor, designed using a 180 nm CMOS process, features an enhanced pixel matrix and additional functionalities compared to its predecessor. Laboratory tests and test beam characterization results on irradiated and unirradiated TJ-Monopix2 sensors have yielded promising results, confirming the key performance parameters for the OBELIX design. This paper reviews the overall design of the VTX and the OBELIX sensor and presents the latest results of the in-beam characterization of the TJ-Monopix2.

Abstract: The LUXE experiment will investigate the strong-field QED regime by using the interactions of high-energy electrons from the European XFEL in a powerful laser field. It will measure the production of electron-positron pairs as a function of the laser field strength, up to the non-perturbative non-linear regime. LUXE foresees a positron detection system consisting of a tracker and a granular and unprecedentedly compact silicon-tungsten electromagnetic sandwich calorimeter (ECAL-P). The ECAL-P has been designed to cope with the wide range of the expected number of positrons per bunch crossing. In addition, the energy distribution of the positrons has to be measured on top of a widely spread low-energy background. The ECAL-P is composed of tungsten absorber plates interspersed with thin sensor planes, consisting of silicon pad sensors, flexible Kapton printed circuit planes, and carbon fiber support. The sensor planes are less than 1 mm thick and will be read using dedicated front-end ASICs in 130 nm technology (FLAXE) and FPGAs for data pre-processing. GaAs sensor planes with integrated readout strips are also being considered as an alternative to silicon. Prototypes of individual sensor planes have been tested in a 5 GeV electron beam. A full compact calorimeter tower of up to 90 x 90 x 600 mm3 (15 X0) will be produced and tested in an electron beam. The design challenges, sensor characterization, prototyping, integration, commissioning, and the available results from a beam test in 2022 are discussed.

Abstract: Extensive studies were performed on highly irradiated ATLAS18 mini strip detectors to evaluate their annealing behaviour. Collected charge was measured after several steps of annealing at 60 degrees C. For detectors irradiated with neutrons or low energy protons the collected charge exhibited a beneficial effect of short-term annealing which was followed by a decrease in charge collection efficiency at longer annealing times. After irradiation with 23 GeV protons to fluences above Phi(eq) similar to 1.2 . 10(15) cm(-2), the collected charge remained unchanged or decreased after the first few tens of minutes of annealing. Edge-TCT measurements indicated that this unusual annealing behaviour is related to the double-peak electric field profile in the detector. Mixed irradiation with 23 GeV protons and neutrons to fluences matching the expected in the upgraded ATLAS experiment showed this unusual annealing effect will not impact the operation of the ITk strip detector.

Abstract: A right-right-left extension of the Standard Model is proposed. In this model, SM gauge group SU(2)(L) circle times U(1)(Y) is extended to SU(2)(L) circle times SU(2)(R) circle times SU(2)'(R) circle times SU(2)'(L) circle times U(1)(Y). The gauge symmetries SU(2)'(R), SU(2)'(L) are the mirror counterparts of the SU(2)(L) and SU(2)(R), respectively. Parity is spontaneously broken when the scalar Higgs fields acquire vacuum expectation values (VEVs) in a certain pattern. Parity is restored at the scale of SU(2)'(L). The gauge sector has a unique pattern. The scalar sector of the model is optimum, elegant and unique.

Abstract: We discuss a scenario of the type-II two-Higgs- doublet model (2HDM) in which the b (b) over bar gamma gamma rate of the Higgs pair production is enhanced due to the two nearly degenerate 125 GeV Higgs bosons ( h, H). Considering various theoretical and experimental constraints, we figure out the allowed ranges of the trilinear couplings of these two Higgs bosons and calculate the signal rate of b (b) over bar gamma gamma from the productions of Higgs pairs (hh, hH, HH) at the large hadron collider (LHC). We find that in the allowed parameter space some trilinear Higgs couplings can be larger than the Standard Model (SM) value by an order and the production rate of b _ b.. can be greatly enhanced. We also consider a “decoupling” benchmark point where the light CP-even Higgs has a SM-like cubic self-coupling while other trilinear couplings are very small. With a detailed simulation on the b (b) over bar gamma gamma signal and backgrounds, we find that in such a “decoupling” scenario the hh and hH channels can jointly enhance the statistical significance to 5 sigma at 14 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb(-1).

Abstract: Using the most recent release of the ALEPH tau decay data, we present a very detailed phenomenological update of the alpha(s)(m(tau)(2)) determination. We have exploited the sensitivity to the strong coupling in many different ways, exploring several complementary methodologies. All determinations turn out to be in excellent agreement, allowing us to extract a very reliable value of the strong coupling. We find alpha((nf =3))(s)(m(tau)(2)) = 0.328 +/- 0.012 which implies alpha((nf=5))(s)(M-Z(2)) = 0.1197 +/- 0.0014. We critically revise previous work, and point out the problems flawing some recent analyses which claim slightly smaller values.

Abstract: We show that a very simple solution to the strong CP problem naturally leads to Dirac neutrinos. Small effective neutrino masses emerge from a type-I Dirac seesaw mechanism. Neutrino mass limits probe the axion parameters in regions currently inaccessible to conventional searches.
