Title Pair production due to an electric field in 1+1 dimensions and the validity of the semiclassical approximation Type Journal Article

Abstract Solutions to the backreaction equation in 1 + 1-dimensional semiclassical electrodynamics are obtained and analyzed when considering a time-varying homogeneous electric field initially generated by a classical electric current, coupled to either a quantized scalar field or a quantized spin-1/2 field. Particle production by way of the Schwinger effect leads to backreaction effects that modulate the electric field strength. Details of the particle production process are investigated along with the transfer of energy between the electric field and the particles. The validity of the semiclassical approximation is also investigated using a criterion previously implemented for chaotic inflation and, in an earlier form, semiclassical gravity. The criterion states that the semiclassical approximation will break down if any linearized gauge-invariant quantity constructed from solutions to the linear response equation, with finite nonsingular data, grows rapidly for some period of time. Approximations to homogeneous solutions of the linear response equation are computed and it is found that the criterion is violated when the maximum value, E-max, obtained by the electric field is of the order of the critical scale for the Schwinger effect, E-max similar to E-crit m(2)/q, where m is the mass of the quantized field and q is its electric charge. For these approximate solutions the criterion appears to be satisfied in the extreme limits qE(max)/m(2) << 1 and qE(max)/m(2) >> 1.

Title Note on the pragmatic mode-sum regularization method: Translational-splitting in a cosmological background Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 103 Issue 10 Pages 105002 - 9pp

Abstract The point-splitting renormalization method offers a prescription to calculate finite expectation values of quadratic operators constructed from quantum fields in a general curved spacetime. It has been recently shown by Levi and Ori that when the background metric possesses an isometry, like stationary or spherically symmetric black holes, the method can be upgraded into a pragmatic procedure of renormalization that produces efficient numerical calculations. In this paper we show that when the background enjoys three-dimensional spatial symmetries, like homogeneous expanding universes, the above pragmatic regularization technique reduces to the well-established adiabatic regularization method.

Title Fully coupled functional equations for the quark sector of QCD Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 103 Issue 9 Pages 094013 - 25pp
Keywords
Abstract We present a comprehensive study of the quark sector of 2 + 1 flavor QCD, based on a self-consistent treatment of the coupled system of Schwinger-Dyson equations for the quark propagator and the full quark-gluon vertex in the one-loop dressed approximation. The individual form factors of the quark-gluon vertex are expressed in a special tensor basis obtained from a set of gauge-invariant operators. The sole external ingredient used as input to our equations is the Landau gauge gluon propagator with 2 + 1 dynamical quark flavors, obtained from studies with Schwinger-Dyson equations, the functional renormalization group approach, and large volume lattice simulations. The appropriate renormalization procedure required in order to self-consistently accommodate external inputs stemming from other functional approaches or the lattice is discussed in detail, and the value of the gauge coupling is accurately determined at two vastly separated renormalization group scales. Our analysis establishes a clear hierarchy among the vertex form factors. We identify only three dominant ones, in agreement with previous results. The components of the quark propagator obtained from our approach are in excellent agreement with the results from Schwinger-Dyson equations, the functional renormalization group, and lattice QCD simulation, a simple benchmark observable being the chiral condensate in the chiral limit, which is computed as (245 MeV)(3). The present approach has a wide range of applications, including the self-consistent computation of bound-state properties and finite temperature and density physics, which are briefly discussed.

Title Diabatic description of bottomoniumlike mesons Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 103 Issue 11 Pages 114016 - 13pp
Keywords
Abstract We apply the diabatic approach, specially suited for a QCD based study of conventional (quark-antiquark) and unconventional (quark-antiquark + meson-meson) meson states, to the description of hidden-bottom mesons. A spectral analysis of the I = 0, J(++) and 1(--) resonances with masses up to about 10.8 GeV is carried out. Masses and widths of all the experimentally known resonances, including conventional and unconventional states, can be well reproduced. In particular, we predict a significant B (B) over bar* component in Upsilon(10580). We also predict the existence of a not yet discovered unconventional 1(++) narrow state, with a significant B-s(B) over bar (s)* content making it to decay into Upsilon(1S)phi, whose experimental discovery would provide definite support to our theoretical analysis.

Title (g-2)(e,mu) in an extended inverse type-III seesaw model Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 103 Issue 11 Pages 115018 - 17pp
Keywords
Abstract There has been a longstanding discrepancy between the experimental measurements of the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments and their predicted values in the Standard Model. This is particularly relevant in the case of the muon g – 2, which has attracted a remarkable interest in the community after the long-awaited announcement of the first results by the Muon g – 2 collaboration at Fermilab, which confirms a previous measurement by the E821 experiment at Brookhaven and enlarges the statistical significance of the discrepancy, now at 4.2 sigma. In this paper we consider an extension of the inverse type-III seesaw with a pair of vectorlike leptons that induces masses for neutrinos at the electroweak scale and show that one can accommodate the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments, while being compatible with all relevant experimental constraints.

Title Big bounce and future time singularity resolution in Bianchi I cosmologies: The projective invariant Nieh-Yan case Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 103 Issue 12 Pages 124031
Keywords
Abstract We extend the notion of the Nieh-Yan invariant to generic metric-affine geometries, where both torsion and nonmetricity are taken into account. Notably, we show that the properties of projective invariance and topologicity can be independently accommodated by a suitable choice of the parameters featuring this new Nieh-Yan term. We then consider a special class of modified theories of gravity able to promote the Immirzi parameter to a dynamical scalar field coupled to the Nieh-Yan form, and we discuss in more detail the dynamics of the effective scalar tensor theory stemming from such a revised theoretical framework. We focus, in particular, on cosmological Bianchi I models and we derive classical solutions where the initial singularity is safely removed in favor of a big bounce, which is ultimately driven by the nonminimal coupling with the Immirzi field. These solutions, moreover, turn out to be characterized by finite time singularities, but we show that such critical points do not spoil the geodesic completeness and wave regularity of these spacetimes.

Title Search for new phenomena in events with an energetic jet and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 103 Issue 11 Pages 112006 - 40pp
Keywords
Abstract Results of a search for new physics in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected in the period 2015-2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Compared to previous publications, in addition to an increase of almost a factor of four in the data size, the analysis implements a number of improvements in the signal selection and the background determination leading to enhanced sensitivity. Events are required to have at least one jet with transverse momentum above 150 GeV and no reconstructed leptons (e, μor tau) or photons. Several signal regions are considered with increasing requirements on the missing transverse momentum starting at 200 GeV. Overall agreement is observed between the number of events in data and the Standard Model predictions. Model-independent 95% confidence-level limits on visible cross sections for new processes are obtained in the range between 736 fb and 0.3 fb. Results are also translated into improved exclusion limits in models with pair-produced weakly interacting dark-matter candidates, large extra spatial dimensions, supersymmetric particles in several compressed scenarios, axionlike particles, and new scalar particles in dark- energy-inspired models. In addition, the data are translated into bounds on the invisible branching ratio of the Higgs boson.

Title Search for trilepton resonances from chargino and neutralino pair production in root s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 103 Issue 11 Pages 112003 - 37pp
Keywords
Abstract A search is performed for the electroweak pair production of charginos and associated production of a chargino and neutralino, each of which decays through an R-parity-violating coupling into a lepton and a W, Z, or Higgs boson. The trilepton invariant-mass spectrum is constructed from events with three or more leptons, targeting chargino decays that include an electron or muon and a leptonically decaying Z boson. The analyzed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data produced by the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV and collected by the ATLAS experiment between 2015 and 2018. The data are found to be consistent with predictions from the Standard Model. The results are interpreted as limits at 95% confidence level on model-independent cross sections for processes beyond the Standard Model. Limits are also set on the production of charginos and neutralinos for a minimal supersymmetric Standard Model with an approximate B – L symmetry. Charginos and neutralinos with masses between 100 and 1100 GeV are excluded depending on the assumed decay branching fractions into a lepton (electron, muon, or tau lepton) plus a boson (W, Z, or Higgs).

Title Supernova constraints on dark flavored sectors Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 103 Issue 12 Pages L121301 - 7pp
Keywords
Abstract Proto-neutron stars forming a few seconds after core-collapse supernovae are hot and dense environments where hyperons can be efficiently produced by weak processes. By making use of various state-of-the-art supernova simulations combined with the proper extensions of the equations of state including Lambda hyperons, we calculate the cooling of the star induced by the emission of dark particles X-0 through the decay Lambda -> nX(0). Comparing this novel energy-loss process to the neutrino cooling of SN 1987A allows us to set a stringent upper limit on the branching fraction, BR(Lambda -> nX(0)) <= 8 x 10(-9), that we apply to massless dark photons and axions with flavor-violating couplings to quarks. We find that the new supernova bound can be orders of magnitude stronger than other limits in dark-sector models.

Title Improved constraints on neutrino mixing from the T2K experiment with 3.13 x 10(21) protons on target Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 103 Issue 11 Pages 112008 - 59pp

Abstract The T2K experiment reports updated measurements of neutrino and antineutrino oscillations using both appearance and disappearance channels. This result comes from an exposure of 14.9(16.4) x 10(20) protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode. Significant improvements have been made to the neutrino interaction model and far detector reconstruction. An extensive set of simulated data studies have also been performed to quantify the effect interaction model uncertainties have on the T2K oscillation parameter sensitivity. T2K performs multiple oscillation analyses that present both frequentist and Bayesian intervals for the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata parameters. For fits including a constraint on sin(2)theta(13) from reactor data and assuming normal mass ordering T2K measures sin(2)theta(13) = 0.53(-0.04)(+0.03) and Delta m(32)(2) = (2.45 +/- 0.07) x 10(-3) eV(2) c(-4). The Bayesian analyses show a weak preference for normal mass ordering 89)% posterior probability) and the upper sin(2)theta(13) octant (80% posterior probability), with a uniform prior probability assumed in both cases. The T2K data exclude CP conservation in neutrino oscillations at the 2 sigma level.
