Title Gluon condensates and effective gluon mass Type Journal Article
Year 2022 Publication Scipost Physics Abbreviated Journal SciPost Phys.
  Volume 13 Issue 2 Pages 042 - 40pp
  Keywords
Abstract Lattice simulations along with studies in continuum QCD indicate that non-perturbative quantum fluctuations lead to an infrared regularisation of the gluon propagator in covariant gauges in the form of an effective mass-like behaviour. In the present work we propose an analytic understanding of this phenomenon in terms of gluon condensation through a dynamical version of the Higgs mechanism, leading to the emergence of color condensates. Within the functional renormalisation group approach we compute the effective potential of covariantly constant field strengths, whose non-trivial minimum is related to the color condensates. In the physical case of an SU(3) gauge group this is an octet condensate. The value of the gluon mass obtained through this procedure compares very well to lattice results and the mass gap arising from alternative dynamical scenarios.

Title Quantum-enhanced multiparameter estimation and compressed sensing of a field Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Scipost Physics Abbreviated Journal SciPost Phys.
  Volume 14 Issue 3 Pages 050 - 18pp
  Keywords
Abstract We show that a significant quantum gain corresponding to squeezed or over-squeezed spin states can be obtained in multiparameter estimation by measuring the Hadamard coefficients of a 1D or 2D signal. The physical platform we consider consists of twolevel atoms in an optical lattice in a squeezed-Mott configuration, or more generally by correlated spins distributed in spatially separated modes. Our protocol requires the possibility to locally flip the spins, but relies on collective measurements. We give examples of applications to scalar or vector field mapping and compressed sensing.

Title High-precision muon decay predictions for ALP searches Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Scipost Physics Abbreviated Journal SciPost Phys.
  Volume 15 Issue 1 Pages 021 - 38pp
  Keywords
Abstract We present an improved theoretical prediction of the positron energy spectrum for the polarised Michel decay & mu;+ & RARR; e+ & nu;e & nu; over bar & mu;. In addition to the full next-to-next-to-leading order correction of order & alpha;2 in the electromagnetic coupling, we include logarithmically enhanced terms at even higher orders. Logarithms due to collinear emission are included at next-to-leading accuracy up to order & alpha;4. At the endpoint of the Michel spectrum, soft photon emission results in large logarithms that are resummed up to next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy. We apply our results in the context of the MEG II and Mu3e experiments to estimate the impact of the theory error on the branching ratio sensitivity for the lepton-flavour-violating decay & mu;+ & RARR; e+X of a muon into an axion-like particle X.

Title Anomaly Awareness Type Journal Article

  Volume 15 Issue 2 Pages 053 - 24pp

Abstract We present a new algorithm for anomaly detection called Anomaly Awareness. The algorithm learns about normal events while being made aware of the anomalies through a modification of the cost function. We show how this method works in different Particle Physics situations and in standard Computer Vision tasks. For example, we apply the method to images from a Fat Jet topology generated by Standard Model Top and QCD events, and test it against an array of new physics scenarios, including Higgs production with EFT effects and resonances decaying into two, three or four subjets. We find that the algorithm is effective identifying anomalies not seen before, and becomes robust as we make it aware of a varied-enough set of anomalies.

Title Lattice simulations of non-minimally coupled scalar fields in the Jordan frame Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Scipost Physics Abbreviated Journal SciPost Phys.
  Volume 15 Issue 3 Pages 077 - 28pp
  Keywords
Abstract The presence of scalar fields with non-minimal gravitational interactions of the form & xi;|& phi;|2R may have important implications for the physics of the early universe. We propose a procedure to solve the dynamics of non-minimally coupled scalar fields directly in the Jordan frame, where the non-minimal couplings are maintained explicitly. Our algorithm can be applied to lattice simulations that include minimally coupled fields and an arbitrary number of non-minimally coupled scalars, with the expansion of the universe sourced by all fields present. This includes situations when the dynamics become fully inhomogeneous, fully non-linear (due to e.g. backreaction or mode rescattering effects), and/or when the expansion of the universe is dominated by non-minimally coupled species. As an example, we study geometric preheating with a non-minimally coupled scalar spectator field when the inflaton oscillates following the end of inflation.

Title Upper bound on neutrino mass based on T2K neutrino timing measurements Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 93 Issue 1 Pages 012006 - 15pp
  Keywords
Abstract The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) long-baseline neutrino experiment consists of a muon neutrino beam, produced at the J-PARC accelerator, a near detector complex and a large 295-km-distant far detector. The present work utilizes the T2K event timing measurements at the near and far detectors to study neutrino time of flight as a function of derived neutrino energy. Under the assumption of a relativistic relation between energy and time of flight, constraints on the neutrino rest mass can be derived. The sub-GeV neutrino beam in conjunction with timing precision of order tens of ns provide sensitivity to neutrino mass in the few MeV/c(2) range. We study the distribution of relative arrival times of muon and electron neutrino candidate events at the T2K far detector as a function of neutrino energy. The 90% C.L. upper limit on the mixture of neutrino mass eigenstates represented in the data sample is found to be m(v)(2) < 5.6 MeV2/c(4).

Title Conditions for statistical determination of the neutrino mass spectrum in radiative emission of neutrino pairs in atoms Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 93 Issue 1 Pages 013020 - 10pp

Abstract The photon spectrum in macrocoherent atomic deexcitation via radiative emission of neutrino pairs has been proposed as a sensitive probe of the neutrino mass spectrum, capable of competing with conventional neutrino experiments. In this paper we revisit this interesting proposal in order to quantify the requirements for statistical determination of some of the properties of the neutrino spectrum, in particular, the neutrino mass scale and the mass ordering. Our results are shown as the product of the experimental lifetime, the target volume, and the number density of atoms which have to be set in a coherence state with a given electric field in the target, needed for determination of these properties with a given confidence level.

Title Search for mixing-induced CP violation using partial reconstruction of (B)over-bar(0) -> D*(+)Xl(-)(nu)over-bar(l) and kaon tagging Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D

  Keywords
Abstract We describe in detail a previously published measurement of CP violation in B-0-(B) over bar (0) oscillations, based on an integrated luminosity of 425.7 fb(-1) collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEPII collider. We apply a novel technique to a sample of about 6 million (B) over bar (0) -> D*(+)l(-)(nu) over bar (l) decays selected with partial reconstruction of the D*(+) meson. The charged lepton identifies the flavor of one B meson at its decay time, the flavor of the other B is determined by kaon tagging. We determine a CP violating asymmetry A(CP) = (N((BB0)-B-0) – N((B) over bar (0)(B) over bar (0)))/(N((BB0)-B-0) + N((B) over bar (0)(B) over bar (0))) = (0.06 +/- 0.17(-0.32)(+0.38))% corresponding to Delta(CP) = 1-vertical bar q/p vertical bar = (0.29 +/- 0.84(-1.61)(+1.88)) x 10(-3). This measurement is consistent and competitive with those obtained at the B factories with dilepton events.

Title Wormholes and nonsingular spacetimes in Palatini f(R) gravity Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 93 Issue 6 Pages 064016 - 8pp
  Keywords
Abstract We reconsider the problem of f(R) theories of gravity coupled to Born-Infeld theory of electrodynamics formulated in a Palatini approach, where metric and connection are independent fields. By studying electrovacuum configurations in a static and spherically symmetric spacetime, we find solutions which reduce to their Reissner-Nordstrom counterparts at large distances but undergo important nonperturbative modifications close to the center. Our new analysis reveals that the pointlike singularity is replaced by a finite-size wormhole structure, which provides a geodesically complete and thus nonsingular spacetime, despite the existence of curvature divergences at the wormhole throat. Implications of these results, in particular for the cosmic censorship conjecture, are discussed.

Title Search for the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in root s=8 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 93 Issue 5 Pages 052002 - 50pp
  Keywords
Abstract The ATLAS experiment has performed extensive searches for the electroweak production of charginos, neutralinos, and staus. This article summarizes and extends the search for electroweak supersymmetry with new analyses targeting scenarios not covered by previously published searches. New searches use vector-boson fusion production, initial-state radiation jets, and low-momentum lepton final states, as well as multivariate analysis techniques to improve the sensitivity to scenarios with small mass splittings and low-production cross sections. Results are based on 20 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed. The new and existing searches are combined and interpreted in terms of 95% confidence-level exclusion limits in simplified models, where a single production process and decay mode is assumed, as well as within phenomenological supersymmetric models.
