Abstract After the completion of the experimental program at SIS18 the HADES setup will migrate to FAIR, where it will deliver high-quality data for heavy-ion collisions in an unexplored energy range of up to 8 A GeV. In this contribution, we briefly present the physics case, relevant detector characteristics and discuss the recently completed upgrade of HADES.

Title Spectroscopy of odd-mass cobalt isotopes toward the N=40 subshell closure and shell-model description of spherical and deformed states Type Journal Article

Abstract The neutron-rich cobalt isotopes up to A = 67 have been studied through multinucleon transfer reactions by bombarding a U-238 target with a 460-MeV Zn-70 beam. Unambiguous identification of prompt gamma rays belonging to each nucleus has been achieved using coincidence relationships with the ions detected in a high-acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The new data are discussed in terms of the systematics of the cobalt isotopes and interpreted with large-scale shell-model calculations in the fpgd model space. In particular, very different shapes can be described in Co-67, at the edge of the island of inversion at N = 40, where a low-lying highly deformed band coexists with a spherical structure.

Title Looking for magnetic monopoles at LHC with diphoton events Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication European Physical Journal Plus Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. Plus
Volume 127 Issue 5 Pages 60 - 15pp
Keywords
Abstract Magnetic monopoles have been a subject of interest since Dirac established the relation between the existence of monopoles and charge quantization. The intense experimental search carried thus far has not met with success. The Large Hadron Collider is reaching energies never achieved before allowing the search for exotic particles in the TeV mass range. In a continuing effort to discover these rare particles we propose here other ways to detect them. We study the observability of monopoles and monopolium, a monopole-antimonopole bound state, at the Large Hadron Collider in the gamma gamma channel for monopole masses in the range 500-1000 GeV. We conclude that LHC is an ideal machine to discover monopoles with masses below 1 TeV at present running energies and with 5 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity.

Title Search for same-sign top-quark production and fourth-generation down-type quarks in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 04 Issue 4 Pages 069 - 40pp
Keywords Hardron-Hadron Scattering
Abstract A search is preseritecl for same-sign top-quark production and down-type heavy quarks of charge -1/3 in events with two isolated leptons (c or mu) that have the same electric charge, at least two jets and large missing transverse momentum. The data are selected from pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb(-1). The observed data are consistent with expectations from Standard Model processes. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the cross section of new sources of same-sign top-quark pair production of 1.4-2.0 pb depending on the assumed mediator mass. Upper limits are also set on the pair-production cross-section for new heavy down-type quarks; a lower limit of 450 GeV is set at 95% confidence level on the mass of heavy down-type quarks under the assumption that they decay 100% of the time to Wt.

Title Histogram comparison tools for the search of new physics at LHC. Application to the CMSSM Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 04 Issue 4 Pages 133 - 27pp
Keywords Beyond Standard Model; Supersymmetric Standard Model; Statistical Methods
Abstract We propose a rigorous and effective way to compare experimental and theoretical histograms, incorporating the different sources of statistical and systematic uncertainties. This is a useful tool to extract as much information as possible from the comparison between experimental data with theoretical simulations, optimizing the chances of identifying New Physics at the LHC. We illustrate this by showing how a search in the CMSSM parameter space, using Bayesian techniques, can effectively find the correct values of the CMSSM parameters by comparing histograms of events with multijets + missing transverse momentum displayed in the effective-mass variable. The procedure is in fact very efficient to identify the true supersymmetric model, in the case supersymmetry is really there and accessible to the LHC.
