Title Experimental Evidence for Transverse Wobbling in Pd-105 Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 122 Issue 6 Pages (down) 062501 - 6pp
Keywords
Abstract New rotational bands built on the nu(h(11/2)) configuration have been identified in Pd-105. Two bands built on this configuration show the characteristics of transverse wobbling: the Delta I = 1 transitions between them have a predominant E2 component and the wobbling energy decreases with increasing spin. The properties of the observed wobbling bands are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using constrained triaxial covariant density functional theory and quantum particle rotor model calculations. This provides the first experimental evidence for transverse wobbling bands based on a one-neutron configuration, and also represents the first observation of wobbling motion in the A similar to 100 mass region.

Title Isospin Properties of Nuclear Pair Correlations from the Level Structure of the Self-Conjugate Nucleus Ru-88 Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 124 Issue 6 Pages (down) 062501 - 6pp
Keywords
Abstract The low-lying energy spectrum of the extremely neutron-deficient self-conjugate (N = Z) nuclide Ru-88(44)44 has been measured using the combination of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) spectrometer, the NEDA and Neutron Wall neutron detector arrays, and the DIAMANT charged particle detector array. Excited states in Ru-88 were populated via the Fe-54(Ar-36, 2n gamma)Ru-88* fusion-evaporation reaction at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) accelerator complex. The observed gamma-ray cascade is assigned to Ru-88 using clean prompt gamma-gamma-2-neutron coincidences in anticoincidence with the detection of charged particles, confirming and extending the previously assigned sequence of low-lying excited states. It is consistent with a moderately deformed rotating system exhibiting a band crossing at a rotational frequency that is significantly higher than standard theoretical predictions with isovector pairing, as well as observations in neighboring N > Z nuclides. The direct observation of such a “delayed” rotational alignment in a deformed N = Z nucleus is in agreement with theoretical predictions related to the presence of strong isoscalar neutron-proton pair correlations.

Title Quantum walks in weak electric fields and Bloch oscillations Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review A Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. A
Volume 101 Issue 6 Pages (down) 062324 - 12pp
Keywords
Abstract Bloch oscillations appear when an electric field is superimposed on a quantum particle that evolves on a lattice with a tight-binding Hamiltonian (TBH), i.e., evolves via what we call an electric TBH; this phenomenon will be referred to as TBH Bloch oscillations. A similar phenomenon is known to show up in so-called electric discrete-time quantum walks (DQWs) [C. Cedzich et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 160601 (2013);] this phenomenon will be referred to as DQW Bloch oscillations. This similarity is particularly salient when the electric field of the DQW is weak. For a wide, i.e., spatially extended, initial condition, one numerically observes semiclassical oscillations, i.e., oscillations of a localized particle, for both the electric TBH and the electric DQW. More precisely, the numerical simulations strongly suggest that the semiclassical DQW Bloch oscillations correspond to two counterpropagating semiclassical TBH Bloch oscillations. In this work it is shown that, under certain assumptions, the solution of the electric DQW for a weak electric field and a wide initial condition is well approximated by the superposition of two continuous-time expressions, which are counterpropagating solutions of an electric TBH whose hopping amplitude is the cosine of the arbitrary coin-operator mixing angle. In contrast, if one wishes the continuous-time approximation to hold for spatially localized initial conditions, one needs at least the DQW to be lazy, as suggested by numerical simulations and by the fact that this has been proven in the case of a vanishing electric field [F. W. Strauch, Phys. Rev. A 74, 030301(R) (2006)].

Title Evidence for a New Structure in the J/psi p and J/psi(p)over-bar Systems in B-s(0) -> J/psi p(p)over-bar Decays Type Journal Article
Year 2022 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.

Abstract An amplitude analysis of flavor-untagged B-s(0) -> J=psi p (p) over bar decays is performed using a sample of 797 +/- 31 decays reconstructed with the LHCb detector. The data, collected in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and 2018, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). Evidence for a new structure in the J=psi p and J=psi(p) over bar systems with a mass of 4337(-4-2)(+7+2) MeV and a width of 29(-12-14)(+26+14) MeV is found, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, with a significance in the range of 3.1 to 3.7 sigma, depending on the assigned J(P) hypothesis.

Title Evidence for Modification of b Quark Hadronization in High-Multiplicity pp Collisions at √s=13 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 131 Issue 6 Pages (down) 061901 - 11pp
Keywords
Abstract The production rate of B-s(0) mesons relative to B-0 mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV over the forward rapidity interval 2 < y < 4.5 as a function of the charged particle multiplicity measured in the event. Evidence at the 3.4 sigma level is found for an increase of the ratio of B-s(0) to B-0 cross sections with multiplicity at transverse momenta below 6 GeV=c, with no significant multiplicity dependence at higher transverse momentum. Comparison with data from e(+)e(-) collisions implies that the density of the hadronic medium may affect the production rates of B mesons. This is qualitatively consistent with the emergence of quark coalescence as an additional hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity collisions.

Abstract This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. Events from WWW production are observed with a significance of 8.0 standard deviations, where the expectation is 5.4 standard deviations. The inclusive WWW production cross section is measured to be 820 ± 100 (stat) ± 80 (syst) fb, approximately 2.6 standard deviations from the predicted cross section of 511 ± 18 fb calculated at next-to-leading-order QCD and leading-order electroweak accuracy.

Title Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of W Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in root s=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 131 Issue 6 Pages (down) 061803 - 23pp
Keywords
Abstract A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139 fb(-1) of vs = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W ?N μor W -Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. No signal is observed, and limits are set on the squared mixing parameters of the N with the left-handed neutrino states for the N mass range 3 GeV < m(N) < 15 GeV. For the first time, limits are given for both single-flavor and multiflavor mixing scenarios motivated by neutrino flavor oscillation results for both the normal and inverted neutrino-mass hierarchies.

Title CP Properties of Higgs Boson Interactions with Top Quarks in the (tt)over-barH and tH Processes Using H -> gamma gamma with the ATLAS Detector Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 125 Issue 6 Pages (down) 061802 - 21pp
Keywords
Abstract A study of the charge conjugation and parity (CP) properties of the interaction between the Higgs boson and top quarks is presented. Higgs bosons are identified via the diphoton decay channel (H -> gamma gamma), and their production in association with a top quark pair ((tt) over barH) or single top quark (tH) is studied. The analysis uses 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy off root s= 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Assuming a CP-even coupling, the (tt) over barH process is observed with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. The measured cross section times H -> gamma gamma branching ratio is 1.64(-0.36)(+0.38)(stat)(-0.14)(+0.17) (sys) fb, and the measured rate for (tt) over barH is 1.43(-0.31)(+0.33) (stat)(-0.15)(+0.21) (sys) times the Standard Model expectation. The tH production process is not observed and an upper limit on its rate of 12 times the Standard Model expectation is set. A CP-mixing angle greater (less) than 43 (-43)degrees is excluded at 95% confidence level.

Title Test of CP Invariance in Higgs Boson Vector-Boson-Fusion Production Using the H → γγ Channel with the ATLAS Detector Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 131 Issue 6 Pages (down) 061802 - 23pp

Abstract A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H -> gamma gamma channel using 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: (d) over tilde in the HISZ basis and c(H (W) over tilde) in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on (d) over tilde is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c(H (W) over tilde) has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Title Late time approach to Hawking radiation: Terms beyond leading order Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 100 Issue 6 Pages (down) 061703 - 5pp
Keywords
Abstract Black hole evaporation is studied using wave packets for the modes. These allow for approximate frequency and time resolution. The leading order late time behavior gives the well-known Hawking radiation that is independent of how the black hole formed. The focus here is on the higher order terms and the rate at which they damp at late times. Some of these terms carry information about how the black hole formed. A general argument is given which shows that the damping is significantly slower (power law) than what might be naively expected from a stationary phase approximation (exponential). This result is verified by numerical calculations in the cases of 2D and 4D black holes that form from the collapse of a null shell.
