  Abstract The production fraction of the B-c(-) meson with respect to the sum of B- and (B) over bar (0) mesons is measured in both 7 and 13 TeV center-of-mass (c.m.) energy pp collisions produced by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), using the LHCb detector. The rate, approximately 3.7 per mine, does not change with energy, but shows a transverse momentum dependence. The B-c(-) – B-c(+) production asymmetry is also measured and is consistent with zero within the determined statistical and systematic uncertainties of a few percent.

  Abstract A search for the rare flavor-changing neutral current process B- -> Lambda(p) over bar nu(nu) over bar using data from the BABAR experiment has been performed. A total of 424 fb(-1) of e(+) e(-) collision data collected at the center-of-mass energy of the Upsilon(4S) resonance is used in this study, corresponding to a sample of (471 +/- 3) x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs. Signal B- -> Lambda(p) over bar nu(nu) over bar candidates arc identified by fast fully reconstructing a B+ decay in one of many possible exclusive decays to hadronic final states, then examining detector activity that is not associated with this reconstructed B+ decay for evidence of a signal B- -> Lambda(p) over bar nu(nu) over bar decay. The data yield is found to be consistent with the expected background contribution under a null signal hypothesis, resulting in an upper limit of B(B- -> Lambda(p) over bar nu(nu) over bar) < 3.0 x 10(-5) at the 90% confidence level.

  Abstract Phonon creation inside the horizons of acoustic black holes is investigated using two simple toy models. It is shown that, unlike what occurs in the exterior regions, the spectrum is not thermal. This nonthermality is due to the anomalous scattering that occurs in the interior regions.

  Abstract It is well known that a quantized two-dimensional Weyl fermion coupled to gravity spoils general covariance and breaks the covariant conservation of the energy-momentum tensor. In this brief article, we point out that the quantum conservation of the momentum can also fail in flat spacetime, provided the Weyl fermion is coupled to a time-varying homogeneous electric field. This signals a quantum anomaly of the space-translation symmetry, which has not been highlighted in the literature so far.

  Title Quantum-corrected rotating black holes and naked singularities in (2+1) dimensions Type Journal Article

  Abstract We analytically investigate the perturbative effects of a quantum conformally coupled scalar field on rotating (2 + 1)-dimensional black holes and naked singularities. In both cases we obtain the quantum-back-reacted metric analytically. In the black hole case, we explore the quantum corrections on different regions of relevance for a rotating black hole geometry. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the ergosphere, as well as to a reduction of the angular velocity compared to their corresponding unperturbed values. Quantum corrections also give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no evidence of the appearance of a superradiant instability. In the naked singularity case, quantum effects lead to the formation of a horizon that hides the conical defect, thus turning it into a black hole. The fact that these effects occur not only for static but also for spinning geometries makes a strong case for the role of quantum mechanics as a cosmic censor in Nature.

  Title Accelerating the BSM interpretation of LHC data with machine learning Type Journal Article

  Abstract The interpretation of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data in the framework of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) theories is hampered by the need to run computationally expensive event generators and detector simulators. Performing statistically convergent scans of high-dimensional BSM theories is consequently challenging, and in practice unfeasible for very high-dimensional BSM theories. We present here a new machine learning method that accelerates the interpretation of LHC data, by learning the relationship between BSM theory parameters and data. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that this technique accurately predicts natural SUSY signal events in two signal regions at the High Luminosity LHC, up to four orders of magnitude faster than standard techniques. The new approach makes it possible to rapidly and accurately reconstruct the theory parameters of complex BSM theories, should an excess in the data be discovered at the LHC.

  Abstract We study theoretically the decay tau(-) -> nu(tau)P(-)A, with P- a pi(-) or K- and A an axial-vector resonance b(1)(1235), h(1) (1170), h(1) (1380), a(1) (1260), f(1) (1285) or any of the two poles of the K-1 (1270). The process proceeds through a triangle mechanism where a vector meson pair is first produced from the weak current and then one of the vectors produces two pseudoscalars, one of which reinteracts with the other vector to produce the axial resonance. For the initial weak hadronic production we use a recent formalism to account for the hadronization after the initial quark-antiquark pair produced from the weak current, which explicitly filters G-parity states and obtain easy analytic formulas after working out the angular momentum algebra. The model also takes advantage of the chiral unitary theories to evaluate the vector-pseudoscalar (VP) amplitudes, where the axial-vector resonances were obtained as dynamically generated from the vector-pseudoscalar interaction. We make predictions for invariant mass distribution and branching ratios for the channels considered.

  Abstract Proton decay is usually discussed in the context of grand unified theories. However, as is well known, in the standard model effective theory proton decay appears in the form of higher-dimensional non-renormalizable operators. Here, we study systematically the one-loop decomposition of the d = 6 B + L violating operators. We exhaustively list the possible one-loop ultraviolet completions of these operators and discuss that, in general, two distinct classes of models appear. Models in the first class need an additional symmetry in order to avoid tree-level proton decay. These models necessarily contain a neutral particle, which could act as a dark matter candidate. For models in the second class the loop contribution dominates automatically over the tree-level proton decay, without the need for additional symmetries. We also discuss possible phenomenology of two example models, one from each class, and their possible connections to neutrino masses, LHC searches and dark matter.

  Abstract We explore the sensitivity of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) near detector and the proposed DUNE-PRISM movable near detector to sub-GeV dark matter, specifically scalar dark matter coupled to the standard model via a sub-GeV dark photon. We consider dark matter produced in the DUNE target that travels to the detector and scatters off electrons. By combining searches for dark matter at many off-axis positions with DUNE-PRISM, sensitivity to this scenario can be much stronger than when performing a measurement at one on-axis position.

  Abstract We present a novel analysis of the gluon gap equation, where its full nonlinear structure is duly taken into account. In particular, while in previous treatments the linearization of this homogeneous integral equation introduced an indeterminacy in the scale of the corresponding mass, the current approach determines it uniquely, once the value of the gauge coupling at a given renormalization point is used as input. A crucial ingredient for this construction is the “kinetic term” of the gluon propagator, whose form is not obtained from the complicated equation governing its evolution, but is rather approximated by suitable initial Ansatze, which are subsequently improved by means of a systematic iterative procedure. The multiplicative renormalization of the central equation is carried out following an approximate method, which is extensively employed in the studies of the standard quark gap equation. This approach amounts to the effective substitution of the vertex renormalization constants by kinematically simplified form factors of the three- and four-gluon vertices. The resulting numerical interplay, exemplified by the infrared suppression of the three-gluon vertex and the mild enhancement of the four-gluon vertex, is instrumental for obtaining positive-definite and monotonically decreasing running gluon masses. The resulting gluon propagators, put together from the gluon masses and kinetic terms obtained with this method, match rather accurately the data obtained from large-volume lattice simulations.
