Abstract |
In extensions of the Standard Model with two Higgs doublets, flavor-changing Yukawa couplings of the neutral scalars may be present at tree level. In this work, we consider the most general scenario in which those flavor-changing couplings are absent. We revise the conditions that the Yukawa coupling matrices must obey for such general flavour conservation (gFC) and study the one-loop renormalization group evolution of such conditions in both the quark and lepton sectors. We show that gFC in the leptonic sector is one-loop stable under the renormalization group evolution, and in the quark sector, we present some new Cabibbo-like solution also one-loop stable under renormalization group evolution. At a phenomenological level, we obtain the regions for the different gFC parameters that are allowed by the existing experimental constraints related to the 125 GeV Higgs. |

Abstract |
We investigate a simple realistic grand unified theory based on the SU(5) gauge symmetry, which predicts an upper bound on the proton decay lifetime for the channels p -> K+(nu) over bar and p -> pi(+)(nu) over bar, i.e., tau (p -> K+(nu) over bar) less than or similar to 3.4 x 10(35) and tau(p -> pi(+)(nu) over bar) less than or similar to 1.7 x 10(34) years, respectively. In this context, the neutrino masses are generated through the type I and type III seesaw mechanisms, and one predicts that the field responsible for type III seesaw must be light with a mass below 500 TeV. We discuss the testability of this theory at current and future proton decay experiments. |

Abstract |
We investigate the reach at the LHC to probe light sterile neutrinos with displaced vertices. We focus on sterile neutrinos N with masses m(N) similar to (5-30) GeV that are produced in rare decays of the standard model gauge bosons and decay inside the inner trackers of the LHC detectors. With a strategy that triggers on the prompt lepton accompanying the N displaced vertex and considers charged tracks associated with it, we show that the 13 TeV LHC with 3000/fb is able to probe active-sterile neutrino mixings down to vertical bar V-lN vertical bar(2) approximate to 10(-9), with l = e, mu, which is an improvement of up to 4 orders of magnitude when comparing with current experimental limits from trileptons and proposed lepton-jets searches. In the case when tau mixing is present, mixing angles as low as vertical bar V-tau N vertical bar(2) approximate to 10(-8) can be accessed. |

Abstract |
In this paper, a follow-up of [S. C. Chulia, R. Srivastava, and J. W. F. Valle, Phys. Lett. B 781, 122 (2018)], we describe the many pathways to generate Dirac neutrino mass through dimension-six operators. By using only the standard model Higgs doublet in the external legs, one gets a unique operator 1/Lambda(2) (L) over bar (Phi) over bar (Phi) over bar Phi nu(R). In contrast, the presence of new scalars implies new possible field contractions, which greatly increase the number of possibilities. Here, we study in detail the simplest ones, involving SU(2)(L) singlets, doublets, and triplets. The extra symmetries needed to ensure the Dirac nature of neutrinos can also be responsible for stabilizing dark matter. |

Abstract |
Background: beta-delayed multiple neutron emission has been observed for some nuclei with A <= 100 being the Rb-100 the heaviest beta 2n emitter measured to date. So far only 25 P-2n values have been determined for the approximate to 300 nuclei that may decay in this way. Accordingly it is of interest to measure P-2n values for the other possible multiple neutron emitters throughout the chart of the nuclides. It is of particular interest to make such a measurement for nuclei with A > 100 to test the predictions of theoretical models and simulation tools for the decays of heavy nuclei in the region of very neutron-rich nuclei. In addition the decay properties of these nuclei are fundamental for the understanding of astrophysical nucleosynthesis processes such as the r-process and safety inputs for nuclear reactors. Purpose: To determine for the first time the two-neutron branching ratio the P-2n value for Sb-136 through a direct neutron measurement and to provide precise P-1n values for Sb-136 and Te-136. Method: A pure beam of each isotope of interest was provided by the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility of the University of Jyvaskyla Finland. The purified ions were implanted into a moving tape at the end of the beam line. The detection setup consisted of a plastic scintillator placed right behind the implantation point after the tape to register the beta decays and the BELEN detector based on neutron counters embedded in a polyethylene matrix. The analysis was based on the study of the beta- and neutron-growth-and-decay curves and the beta-one-neutron and beta-two-neutron time correlations which allowed us the determination of the neutron branching ratios. Results: The P-2n value of Sb-136 was found to be 0.14(3)% and the measured P-1n values for Sb-136 and Te-136 were found to be 32.2(15)% and 1.47(6)% respectively. Conclusions: The measured P-2n value is a factor 44 smaller than predicted by the finite-range droplet model plus the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (FRDM+QRPA) model used for r-process calculations. |
