Abstract |
Advantages of the original symmetrical form of the parametrization of the lepton mixing matrix are discussed. It provides a conceptually more transparent description of neutrino oscillations and lepton number violating processes like neutrinoless double beta decay, clarifying the significance of Dirac and Majorana phases. It is also ideal for parametrizing scenarios with light sterile neutrinos. |

Abstract |
Two-Higgs-doublet models usually consider an ad-hoc Z(2) discrete symmetry to avoid flavor changing neutral currents. We consider a new class of two-Higgs-doublet models where Z(2) is enlarged to the symmetry group F(sic)Z(2), i.e., an inner semidirect product of a discrete symmetry group F and Z(2). In such a scenario, the symmetry constrains the Yukawa interactions but goes unnoticed by the scalar sector. In the most minimal scenario, Z(3)(sic)Z(2) = D-3, flavor changing neutral currents mediated by scalars are absent at tree and one-loop level, while at the same time predictions to quark and lepton mixing are obtained, namely a trivial Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and a Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix (upon introduction of three heavy right-handed neutrinos) containing maximal atmospheric mixing. Small extensions allow to fully reproduce mixing parameters, including cobimaximal mixing in the lepton sector (maximal atmospheric mixing and a maximal charge-parity violating phase). |

Abstract |
There are various diagrams leading to neutrinoless double beta decay in left-right symmetric theories based on the gauge group SU(2)(L) x SU(2)(R). All can in principle be tested at a linear collider running in electron-electron mode. We argue that the so-called lambda-diagram is the most promising one. Taking the current limit on this diagram from double beta decay experiments, we evaluate the relevant cross section e(-)e(-) -> WL-WR-, where W-L(-) is the Standard Model W-boson and W-R(-) the one from SU(2)(R). It is observable if the life-time of double beta decay and the mass of the W-R are close to current limits. Beam polarization effects and the high-energy behaviour of the cross section are also analyzed. |

Abstract |
We explore a common symmetrical origin for two long standing problems in particle physics: the strong CP and the fermion mass hierarchy problems. The Peccei-Quinn mechanism solves the former one with an anomalous global U(1)(PQ) symmetry. Here we investigate how this U(1)(PQ) could at the same time explain the fermion mass hierarchy. We work in the context of a four-Higgs-doublet model which explains all quark and charged fermion masses with natural, i.e. order 1, Yukawa couplings. Moreover, the axion of the model constitutes a viable dark matter candidate and neutrino masses are incorporated via the standard type-I seesaw mechanism. A simple extension of the model allows for Dirac neutrinos. |
