ATLAS Collaboration(Aad, G. et al), Amoros, G., Cabrera Urban, S., Castillo Gimenez, V., Costa, M. J., Ferrer, A., et al. (2011). Search for a heavy neutral particle decaying into an electron and a muon using 1 fb(-1) of ATLAS data. Eur. Phys. J. C, 71(12), 1809–17pp.
Abstract: A search is presented for a high mass neutral particle that decays directly to the e(+/-) mu(-/+) final state. The data sample was recorded by the ATLAS detector in root s = 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC from March to June 2011 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.07 fb(-1). The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model background. The high e(+/-) mu(-/+) mass region is used to set 95% confidence level upper limits on the production of two possible new physics processes: tau sneutrinos in an R-parity violating supersymmetric model and Z'-like vector bosons in a lepton flavor violating model.

ATLAS Collaboration(Aad, G. et al), Amoros, G., Cabrera Urban, S., Castillo Gimenez, V., Costa, M. J., Ferrer, A., et al. (2011). Search for massive colored scalars in four-jet final states in root s=7 TeV proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector. Eur. Phys. J. C, 71(12), 1828–19pp.
Abstract: A search for pair-produced scalar particles decaying to a four-jet final state is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 34 pb(-1) recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2010. No deviation from the Standard Model is observed. For a scalar mass of 100 GeV (190 GeV) the limit on the scalar gluon pair production cross section at 95% confidence level is 1 nb (0.28 nb). When these results are interpreted as mass limits, scalar-gluons (hyperpions) with masses of 100 to 185 GeV (100 to 155 GeV) are excluded at 95% confidence level with the exception of a mass window of width about 5 GeV (15 GeV) around 140 GeV.

BABAR Collaboration(Lees, J. P. et al), Martinez-Vidal, F., & Oyanguren, A. (2012). Amplitude analysis and measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry of B-0 -> (KSKSKS0)-K-0-K-0 decays. Phys. Rev. D, 85(5), 054023–21pp.
Abstract: We present the first results on the Dalitz-plot structure and improved measurements of the time-dependent CP-violation parameters of the process B-0 -> (KSKSKS0)-K-0-K-0 obtained using 468 x 10(6) B (B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. The Dalitz-plot structure is probed by a time-integrated amplitude analysis that does not distinguish between B-0 and (B) over bar (0) decays. We measure the total inclusive branching fraction B(B-0 -> (KSKSKS0)-K-0-K-0) = (6.19 +/- 0.48 +/- 0.15 +/- 0.12) x 10(-6), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third represents the Dalitz-plot signal model dependence. We also observe evidence for the intermediate resonant states f(0)(980), f(0)(1710), and f(2)(2010). Their respective product branching fractions are measured to be (2.70(-1.19)(+1.25) +/- 0.36 +/- 1.17) x 10(-6), (0.50(-0.24)(+0.46) +/- 0.04 +/- 0.10) x 10(-6), and (0.54(-0.20)(+0.21) +/- 0.03 +/- 0.52) x 10(-6). Additionally, we determine the mixing-induced CP-violation parameters to be S = -0.94(-0.21)(+0.24) +/- 0.06 and C = -0.17 +/- 0.18 +/- 0.04, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These values are in agreement with the standard model expectation. For the first time, we report evidence of CP violation in B-0 -> (KSKSKS0)-K-0-K-0 decays; CP conservation is excluded at 3.8 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

Olmo, G. J. (2011). Palatini approach to modified gravity: f(R) theories and beyond. Int. J. Mod. Phys. D, 20(4), 413–462.
Abstract: We review the recent literature on modified theories of gravity in the Palatini approach. After discussing the motivations that lead to consider alternatives to Einstein's theory and to treat the metric and the connection as independent objects, we review several topics that have been recently studied within this framework. In particular, we provide an in-depth analysis of the cosmic speed-up problem, laboratory and solar system tests, the structure of stellar objects, the Cauchy problem, and bouncing cosmologies. We also discuss the importance of going beyond the f(R) models to capture other phenomenological aspects related with dark matter/energy and quantum gravity.

Reichardt, C. L., de Putter, R., Zahn, O., & Hou, Z. (2012). New limits on early dark energy from the South Pole telescope. Astrophys. J. Lett., 749(1), L9–5pp.
Abstract: We present new limits on early dark energy (EDE) from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite on large angular scales and South Pole Telescope on small angular scales. We find a strong upper limit on the EDE density of Omega(e) < 0.018 at 95% confidence, a factor of three improvement over WMAP data alone. We show that adding lower-redshift probes of the expansion rate to the CMB data improves constraints on the dark energy equation of state, but not the EDE density. We also explain how small-scale CMB temperature anisotropy constrains EDE.

Botella-Soler, V., & Glendinning, P. (2012). Emergence of hierarchical networks and polysynchronous behaviour in simple adaptive systems. EPL, 97(5), 50004–5pp.
Abstract: We describe the dynamics of a simple adaptive network. The network architecture evolves to a number of disconnected components on which the dynamics is characterized by the possibility of differently synchronized nodes within the same network (polysynchronous states). These systems may have implications for the evolutionary emergence of polysynchrony and hierarchical networks in physical or biological systems modeled by adaptive networks.

Montanari, D. et al, & Gadea, A. (2012). Gamma spectroscopy of calcium nuclei around doubly magic Ca-48 using heavy-ion transfer reactions. Phys. Rev. C, 85(4), 044301–21pp.
Abstract: The. decays of neutron-rich Ca isotopes around Ca-48 were measured at Legnaro National Laboratory with the PRISMA-CLARA setup, using the heavy-ion transfer reactions Ca-48 on Ni-64 and Ca-48 on Pb-208 at approximate to 6 MeV/A. The work shows the feasibility to perform full in-beam gamma spectroscopy with heavy-ion transfer reactions (in terms of angular distributions, polarizations, and lifetimes analysis), providing a method that can be further exploited in the future with heavy targets and radioactive beams. For the one-neutron transfer channels, Ca-49 and Ca-47, shell-model and particle-vibration coupling calculations are used to understand the nature of the states. In particular, in both nuclei evidence is found for particle-vibration coupled states based on the 3(-) phonon of Ca-48. In the two-neutron transfer channels, Ca-46 and Ca-50, the experimental data are in global agreement with predictions based on full fp shell-model calculations.

ANTARES Collaboration(Adrian-Martinez, S. et al), Bigongiari, C., Dornic, D., Emanuele, U., Gomez-Gonzalez, J. P., Hernandez-Rey, J. J., et al. (2012). Measurement of the group velocity of light in sea water at the ANTARES site. Astropart Phys., 35(9), 552–557.
Abstract: The group velocity of light has been measured at eight different wavelengths between 385 nm and 532 nm in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of about 2.2 km with the ANTARES optical beacon systems. A parametrisation of the dependence of the refractive index on wavelength based on the salinity, pressure and temperature of the sea water at the ANTARES site is in good agreement with these measurements.

Sohler, D. et al, & Algora, A. (2012). High-spin structure of Pd-104. Phys. Rev. C, 85(4), 044303–13pp.
Abstract: The high-spin structure of the nucleus Pd-104 was studied through the Zr-96(C-13,5n) reaction at incident energies of 51 and 58MeV, using the Euroball IV gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the DIAMANT charged-particle array. Several new medium- and high-spin bands were revealed. The already known positive-parity yrast and the negative-parity cascades were extended up to E-x similar to 13, similar to 11, and similar to 9 MeV with I-pi = (26(+)), I-pi = (23(-)), and (20(-)), respectively. The deduced band structures were compared with Woods-Saxon total Routhian surface (TRS) calculations. In addition, non-yrast low-lying positive-parity bands were identified, which were assigned to soft gamma-vibrational excitations.

Pierre Auger Collaboration(Abreu, P. et al), & Pastor, S. (2012). Description of atmospheric conditions at the Pierre Auger Observatory using the Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS). Astropart Phys., 35(9), 591–607.
Abstract: Atmospheric conditions at the site of a cosmic ray observatory must be known for reconstructing observed extensive air showers. The Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) is a global atmospheric model predicated on meteorological measurements and numerical weather predictions. GDAS provides altitude-dependent profiles of the main state variables of the atmosphere like temperature, pressure, and humidity. The original data and their application to the air shower reconstruction of the Pierre Auger Observatory are described. By comparisons with radiosonde and weather station measurements obtained on-site in Malargue and averaged monthly models, the utility of the GDAS data is shown.
