Abstract |
We report observations made on a run of transcritical flows over an obstacle in a narrow channel. Downstream from the obstacle, the flows decelerate from supercritical to subcritical, typically with an undulation on the subcritical side (known in hydrodynamics as an undular hydraulic jump). In the Analogue Gravity context, this transition corresponds to a white-hole horizon. Free-surface deformations are analyzed, mainly via the two-point correlation function which shows the presence of a checkerboard pattern in the vicinity of the undulation. In nongated flows where the white-hole horizon occurs far downstream from the obstacle, this checkerboard pattern is shown to be due to low-frequency fluctuations associated with slow longitudinal movement of the undulation. Tt can thus be considered as an artifact due to a time-varying background. In gated flows, however, the undulation is typically “attached” to the obstacle, and the fluctuations associated with its movement are strongly suppressed. In this case, the observed correlation pattern is likely due to a stochastic ensemble of surface waves, scattering on a background that is essentially stationary. |

Abstract |
We analyze the correlations functions across the horizon in Hawking black hole radiation to reveal the correlations between Hawking particles and their partners. The effects of the underlying space-time on this are shown in various examples ranging from acoustic black holes to regular black holes. |

Abstract |
The Unruh vacuum is widely used as a quantum state to describe black hole evaporation since, near the horizon, it reproduces the physical state of a quantum field, the so-called “in-vacuum”, in the case where a black hole is formed by gravitational collapse. We examine the relation between these two quantum states in the background spacetime of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole (both extremal and not), highlighting the similarities and striking differences. |

Abstract |
We consider a Reissner-Nordström black hole formed by the collapse of a charged null shell. The renormalized expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor operator for a massless scalar field propagating in the two-dimensional section of this spacetime are given. We then analyze the across-the-horizon correlations of the related energy density operator for free-falling observers to reveal the correlations between the Hawking particles and their interior partners. |

Abstract |
We present a detailed analytical analysis of the propagation of Bogoliubov phonons on top of Bose-Einstein condensates with spatial and temporal steplike discontinuities in the speed of sound in the hydrodynamic limit. We focus on some features in the correlations patterns, in particular, of density-density correlations. The application to the study of the Hawking signal in the formation of acoustic black hole-like configurations is also discussed. |

Abstract |
We present a theory of the density correlations that appear in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate as a consequence of the emission of correlated pairs of Bogoliubov phonons by a time-dependent atom-atom scattering length. This effect can be considered as a condensed matter analog of the dynamical Casimir effect of quantum field theory. Different regimes as a function of the temporal shape of the modulation are identified and a simple physical picture of the phenomenon is discussed. Analytical expressions for the density correlation function are provided for the most significant limiting cases. This theory is able to explain some unexpected features recently observed in numerical studies of analog Hawking radiation from acoustic black holes. |

Abstract |
In this paper we extend the hydrodynamic results of {A. Fabbri and C. Mayoral, Phys. Rev. D 83, 124016 (2011).} and study, analytically, the propagation of Bogoliubov phonons on top of Bose-Einstein condensates with steplike discontinuities in the speed of sound by taking into account dispersion effects. We focus on the Hawking signal in the density-density correlations in the formation of acoustic blackhole-like configurations. |
