Abstract: We study charmed and strange odd-parity baryon resonances that are generated dynamically by a unitary baryon-meson coupled-channels model which incorporates heavy-quark spin symmetry. This is accomplished by extending the SU(3) Weinberg-Tomozawa chiral Lagrangian to SU(8) spin-flavor symmetry plus a suitable symmetry breaking. The model generates resonances with negative parity from the s-wave interaction of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with 1/2(+) and 3/2(+) baryons in all the isospin, spin, and strange sectors with one, two, and three charm units. Some of our results can be identified with experimental data from several facilities, such as the CLEO, Belle, or BaBar Collaborations, as well as with other theoretical models, whereas others do not have a straightforward identification and require the compilation of more data and also a refinement of the model. Abstract: We present a strategy to extract the position of the two Lambda(1405) poles from experimental photoproduction data measured recently at different energies in the gamma p -> K+pi(0)Sigma(0) reaction at Jefferson Laboratory. By means of a chiral dynamics motivated potential with free parameters, we solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the coupled channels (K) over barN and pi Sigma in isospin I = 0 and parametrize the amplitude for the photonuclear reaction in terms of a linear combination of the pi Sigma -> pi Sigma and (K) over barN -> pi Sigma scattering amplitudes in I = 0, with a different linear combination for each energy. Good fits to the data are obtained with some sets of parameters, by means of which one can also predict the cross section for the K- p -> pi(0)Sigma(0) reaction. These later results help us decide among the possible solutions. The result is that the different solutions lead to two poles similar to those found in the chiral unitary approach. With the best result we find the two Lambda(1405) poles at 1385 – 68i MeV and 1419 – 22i MeV.

Abstract: Monte Carlo simulations play a crucial role for in-vivo treatment monitoring based on PET and prompt gamma imaging in proton and carbon-ion therapies. The accuracy of the nuclear fragmentation models implemented in these codes might affect the quality of the treatment verification. In this paper, we investigate the nuclear models implemented in GATE/Geant4 and FLUKA by comparing the angular and energy distributions of secondary particles exiting a homogeneous target of PMMA. Comparison results were restricted to fragmentation of O-16 and C-12. Despite the very simple target and set-up, substantial discrepancies were observed between the two codes. For instance, the number of high energy (>1 MeV) prompt gammas exiting the target was about twice as large with GATE/Geant4 than with FLUKA both for proton and carbon ion beams. Such differences were not observed for the predicted annihilation photon production yields, for which ratios of 1.09 and 1.20 were obtained between GATE and FLUKA for the proton beam and the carbon ion beam, respectively. For neutrons and protons, discrepancies from 14% (exiting protons-carbon ion beam) to 57% (exiting neutrons-proton beam) have been identified in production yields as well as in the energy spectra for neutrons.

Abstract: The post-linac energy collimation system of future e(+)e(-) multi-TeV linear colliders is designed to fulfil an essential function of protection of the Beam Delivery System (BDS) against miss-steered or errant beams likely generated by failure modes in the main linac. For the case of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), the energy collimators are required to withstand the impact of a full bunch train in case of failure. This condition makes the design of the energy collimation system especially challenging, if we take into account the need to dispose of an unprecedented transverse beam energy density per beam of the order of GJ/mm(2), when assuming the nominal CLIC beam parameters at 3 TeV centre-of-mass energy, which translates into an extremely high damage potential of uncontrolled beams. This leads to research activities involving new collimator materials and novel collimation techniques. The increase of the transverse spot size at the collimators using nonlinear magnets is a potential solution to guarantee the survival of the collimators. In this paper we present an alternative nonlinear optics based on a multipole magnet pair for energy collimation. In order to preserve an acceptable luminosity performance, we carefully study the general conditions for self-cancellation of optical aberrations between two multipoles. This nonlinear optics scheme is adapted to the requirements of the post-linac energy collimation system for the CLIC BDS, and its performance is investigated by means of beam tracking simulations. Although applied to the CLIC case, this nonlinear protection system could be adapted to other future colliders.

Abstract: We have studied the gamma p -> K-0 Sigma(+) reaction in the energy region around the K*Lambda and K*Sigma thresholds, where the CBELSA/TAPS cross section shows a sudden drop and the differential cross section experiences a transition from a forward-peaked distribution to a flat one. Our coupled-channel model incorporates the dynamics of the vector meson-baryon interaction which is obtained from the hidden gauge formalism. We find that the cross section in this energy region results from a delicate interference between amplitudes having K*Lambda and K*Sigma intermediate states. The sharp downfall is dictated by the presence of a nearby N* resonance produced by our model, a feature that we have employed to predict its properties. We also show results for the complementary gamma n -> K-0 Sigma(0) reaction, the measurement of which would test the mechanism proposed in this work.
