Title Sterile neutrinos and B-L symmetry Type Journal Article

Volume 777 Issue Pages 381-387

Abstract We revisit the relation between the neutrino masses and the spontaneous breaking of the B-L gauge symmetry. We discuss the main scenarios for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos and point out two simple mechanisms for neutrino masses. In this context the neutrino masses can be generated either at tree level or at quantum level and one predicts the existence of very light sterile neutrinos with masses below the eV scale. The predictions for lepton number violating processes such as μ-> e and μ-> e gamma are discussed in detail. The impact from the cosmological constraints on the effective number of relativistic degree of freedom is investigated.

Title Dark matter and the seesaw scale Type Journal Article

Abstract We discuss the possibility of finding an upper hound on the seesaw scale using the cosmological bound on the cold dark matter relic density. We investigate a simple relation between the origin of neutrino masses and the properties of a dark matter candidate in a simple theory where the new symmetry breaking scale defines the seesaw scale. Imposing the cosmological hounds, we find an upper bound of order multi-TeV on the lepton number violation scale. We investigate the predictions for direct and indirect detection dark matter experiments and the possible signatures at the Large Hadron Collider.

Title Seesaw scale, unification, and proton decay Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 98 Issue 3 Pages 035032 - 10pp
Keywords
Abstract We investigate a simple realistic grand unified theory based on the SU(5) gauge symmetry, which predicts an upper bound on the proton decay lifetime for the channels p -> K+(nu) over bar and p -> pi(+)(nu) over bar, i.e., tau (p -> K+(nu) over bar) less than or similar to 3.4 x 10(35) and tau(p -> pi(+)(nu) over bar) less than or similar to 1.7 x 10(34) years, respectively. In this context, the neutrino masses are generated through the type I and type III seesaw mechanisms, and one predicts that the field responsible for type III seesaw must be light with a mass below 500 TeV. We discuss the testability of this theory at current and future proton decay experiments.

Title Role of gravity in the pair creation induced by electric fields Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 98 Issue 4 Pages 045015 - 6pp
Keywords
Abstract We analyze the pair production induced by homogenous, time-dependent electric fields in an expanding space-time background. We point out that, in obtaining the semiclassical Maxwell equations, two distinct notions of adiabatic renormalization are possible. In Minkowski space, the two recipes turn out to be equivalent. However, in the presence of gravity, only the recipe requiring an adiabatic hierarchy between the gravitational and the gauge field is consistent with the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor.

Title Pair creation in electric fields, anomalies, and renormalization of the electric current Type Journal Article

Abstract We investigate the Schwinger pair production phenomena in spatially homogeneous strong electric fields. We first consider scalar QED in four-dimensions and discuss the potential ambiguity in the adiabatic order assignment for the electromagnetic potential required to fix the renormalization subtractions. We argue that this ambiguity can be solved by invoking the conformal anomaly when both electric and gravitational backgrounds are present. We also extend the adiabatic regularization method for spinor QED in two-dimensions and find consistency with the chiral anomaly. We focus on the issue of the renormalization of the electric current < j(mu)> generated by the created pairs. We illustrate how to implement the renormalization of the electric current for the Sauter pulse.
