Abstract: The realization of pulsed-laser diffused, thin n+ contacts on high purity germanium (HPGe) and their successful segmentation is described. The contacts have been obtained by a laser-induced diffusion of Sb atoms, deposited by sputtering on Ge surface, and then segmented by means of a photolithographic technique. Three small prototypes of gamma ray detectors have been implemented, using the same n+ contact (laser diffused Sb) but with three different geometries and a B implanted p+ contact. Electrical and detection properties of the prototypes have been characterized, showing low leakage currents and good spectroscopy data with different gamma-ray sources. The stability of the detector performance has also been tested subjecting one of the prototypes to a typical annealing treatment.

Abstract: We study the system with the aim to describe the rho(1700) resonance. The chiral unitary approach has achieved success in the description of systems of the light hadron sector. With this method, the system in the isospin sector I = 0, is found to be a dominant component of the f (0)(980) resonance. Therefore, by regarding the system as a cluster, the f (0)(980) resonance, we evaluate the system applying the fixed-center approximation to the Faddeev equations. We construct the rho K unitarized amplitude using the chiral unitary approach. As a result, we find a peak in the three-body amplitude around 1732 MeV and a width of about 161 MeV. The effect of the width of the rho and f (0)(980) is also discussed. We associate this peak to the rho(1700) which has a mass of 1720 +/- 20MeV and a width of 250 +/- 100 MeV.

Abstract: The energy centroids and integrated strengths of Gamow-Teller transitions in the beta(+) and electron-capture decay are analyzed for nuclei whose proton number Z and neutron number N are restricted to 44 <= Z <= 50 and 50 <= N <= 58. The analysis is based on data measured both with high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry and total gamma-ray absorption techniques. The dependence of the considered quantities on the relative neutron excess are established after taking into account the effects due to the Coulomb interaction and mean-field level occupancies. An extrapolation of this dependence to the lightest known tin isotopes is used to estimate the decay characteristics of Sn-100 and Sn-101. The values extrapolated for the half-lives of Sn-100 and Sn-101 agree with experimental data. Using the extrapolated values together with shell model predictions, the Q values for the electron-capture decay of Sn-100 is evaluated. The quenching factor for beta(+) and the electron-capture decay of the nuclei under consideration here is established to be 0.56(2) with a possible weak dependence on N – Z.

Abstract: The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss groundstate hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: (p) over barp -> (Lambda) over bar Lambda and (p) over barp -> (Xi) over bar+Xi(-). The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA.

Abstract: In this reviewwe will present the results of recent beta-decay studies using the total absorption technique that cover topics of interest for applications, nuclear structure and astrophysics. The decays studied were selected primarily because they have a large impact on the prediction of (a) the decay heat in reactors, important for the safety of present and future reactors and (b) the reactor electron anti-neutrino spectrum, of interest for particle/nuclear physics and reactor monitoring. For these studies the total absorption technique was chosen, since it is the only method that allows one to obtain beta-decay probabilities free from a systematic error called the Pandemonium effect. The total absorption technique is based on the detection of the. cascades that follow the initial beta decay. For this reason the technique requires the use of calorimeters with very high. detection efficiency. The measurements presented and discussed here were performed mainly at the IGISOL facility of the University of Jyvaskyla (Finland) using isotopically pure beams provided by the JYFLTRAP Penning trap. Examples are presented to show that the results of our measurements on selected nuclei have had a large impact on predictions of both the decay heat and the anti-neutrino spectrum from reactors. Some of the cases involve beta-delayed neutron emission thus one can study the competition between gamma – and neutron-emission from states above the neutron separation energy. The gamma-to-neutron emission ratios can be used to constrain neutron capture (n, gamma) cross sections for unstable nuclei of interest in astrophysics. The information obtained from the measurements can also be used to test nuclear model predictions of half-lives and Pn values for decays of interest in astrophysical network calculations. These comparisons also provide insights into aspects of nuclear structure in particular regions of the nuclear chart.
