Abstract: A ((3)He, t) charge-exchange reaction experiment on the double-beta decaying nucleus (136)Xe has been performed at an incident energy of 420 MeV with the objective to measure the Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distribution in (136)Cs. The measurements have been carried out at the dispersion-matched WS beam line and the Grand Raiden spectrometer of the Research Center for Nuclear Physics in Osaka, where an energy resolution of 42 keV was achieved. A new gas cell with thin windows made of polyethylene naphthalate has been employed as a target. The extracted GT strength distribution is confronted with the rather long 2 nu beta beta decay half-life of (136)Xe.

Abstract: A beta-gamma spectroscopy of the J(pi) = 1(+), 426 keV isomeric state of Al-24 ( Al-24m) has been carried out by using a Al-24 secondary beam with high purity and high isomeric ratio. From the absolute gamma-ray and beta-particle intensities observed in the decay of the isomeric state, the branching ratio R-B of the isomeric gamma-decay from Al-24m to the J(pi) = 4(+), ground state of Al-24 have been derived. The obtained R-B value of 69.6(7)% is much smaller than the previously accepted value of 82.5(30)%. The precise half-life for the isomer decay, T-1/2(m) = 130.9(13) ms, has been also determined in this experiment. Accordingly, the M3 gamma-decay strength B(M3) of the Al-24m decay becomes smaller and the total beta-decay branching ratio becomes larger. In particular, the beta-decay branching ratio to the ground state of Mg-24 becomes 24.3(9)%, which is 2.4 times larger than the previous value of 10.1(28)%. By combining the branching ratio and the half-life, the Gamow-Teller (GT) transition strength B(GT) of 0.0194(7) is deduced for the GT transition from Al-24m to the J(pi) = 0(+), ground state of Mg-24. This value is in good agreement with the values derived from charge-exchange reactions.

Abstract: In this work we have studied T-z = +2 -> +1, Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in the Ti-48(He-3, t)V-48 chargeexchange reaction at 140 MeV/nucleon and 0 degrees at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka. From the high-resolution facility, consisting of a high-dispersion beamline and the Grand Raiden spectrometer, the spectrum had an energy resolution of 21 keV, among the best achieved. Individual GT transitions were observed and GT strength was derived for each state populated up to an excitation energy of 12 MeV. The total sum of the B(GT) strength observed in discrete states was 4.0, which is 33% of the sum-rule-limit value of 12. The results were compared with the results of shell-model calculations carried out with the GXPF1J interaction. The measured B(GT) distribution was also compared with that obtained in the (He-3, t) charge-exchange reaction on Ti-47. On the assumption of isospin symmetry the beta spectrum of the T-z = -2 nucleus Fe-48 was deduced from the observed spectrum in the Ti-48(He-3, t)V-48 reaction and this predicted spectrum was compared with the measured one.

Abstract: Given the importance of Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in nuclear structure and astrophysical nuclear processes, we have studied T-z = +3/2 -> +1/2, GT transitions starting from the Ti-47 nucleus in the (He-3, t) charge-exchange reaction at 0 degrees and at an intermediate incident energy of 140 MeV/nucleon. The experiments were carried out at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka, using the high-resolution facility with a high-dispersion beam line and the Grand-Raiden spectrometer. With an energy resolution of 20 keV, individual GT transitions were observed and GT strength was derived for each state populated up to an excitation energy (E-x) of 12.5 MeV. The GT strength was widely distributed from low excitation energy up to 12.5 MeV, where we had to stop the analysis because of the high level density. The distribution of the GT strengths was compared with the results of shell model calculations using the GXPF1 interaction. The calculations could reproduce the experimental GT distributions well. The GT transitions from the ground state of Ti-47 and the M1 transitions from the isobaric analog state in V-47 to the same low-lying states in V-47 are analogous. It was found that the ratios of GT transition strengths to the ground state, the 0.088-MeV state, and the 0.146-MeV state are similar to the ratios of the strengths of the analogous M1 transitions from the isobaric analog state (IAS) to these states. The measured distribution of the GT strengths was also compared with those starting from the T-z = +3/2 nucleus K-41 to the T-z = +1/2 nucleus Ca-41.

Abstract: Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions are the most common weak-interaction processes in the Universe. They play important roles in various processes of nucleosynthesis, for example, in the rapid proton-capture process (rp-process). In the pf-shell region, the rp-process runs through neutron-deficient nuclei with T-z = -2, -1, and 0 mainly by means of GT and Fermi transitions, where T-z is the z component of isospin T defined by T-z = (N = Z)/2. Under the assumption of isospin symmetry, mirror nuclei with reversed Z and N numbers, and thus with opposite signs of T-z, have the same structure. Therefore, symmetry is also expected for the GT transitions starting from and ending up in mirror nuclei. We have been studying the T-z = -2 -> -1 and -1 -> 0 GT transitions in beta decays, while those from stable T-z = +2 and +1 nuclei by means of hadronic (He-3; t) charge-exchange (CE) reactions. The results from these studies are compared in order to examine the mirror-symmetry structure in nuclei. In addition, these results are combined for the better understanding of GT transitions in the pf-shell region.

Abstract: Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions starting from the T-z = +2 nucleus Zn-64 to the T-z = +1 nucleus Ga-64 were studied in a (p, n)-type (He-3,t) charge-exchange reaction at a beam energy of 140 MeV/nucleon and scattering angles close to 0 degrees. Here, T-z is the z component of the isospin T. The experiment was conducted at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) in Osaka, Japan. An energy resolution of approximate to 34 keV was achieved by applying beam matching techniques to the Grand Raiden magnetic spectrometer system. With our good resolution, we could observe GT strength fragmented in many states up to an excitation energy of approximate to 11 MeV. By performing angular distribution analysis, we could identify states in Ga-64 excited by GT transitions. The reduced GT transition strengths [B(GT)values] were calculated assuming the proportionality between the cross sections and the B(GT)values. Shell-model calculations using the GXPF1J interaction reproduced the B(GT)strength distribution throughout the spectrum. States with isospin T = 3 were identified by comparing the Zn-64(He-3,t)Ga-64 spectrum with a Zn-64(d, He-2)Cu-64 spectrum. Relative excitation energies of the corresponding structures are in good agreement, supporting the robustness of isospin symmetry in the mass number A = 64 nuclei.

Abstract: The Gamow-Teller strength distribution of the decay of Hg-186 into Au-186 has been determined for the first time using the total absorption gamma spectroscopy technique and has been compared with theoretical QRPA calculations using the SLy4 Skyrme force. The measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution and the half-life are described by mixing oblate and prolate configurations independently in the parent and daughter nuclei. In this theoretical framework the best description of the experimental beta strength is obtained with dominantly prolate components for both parent Hg-186 and daughter Au-186. The approach also allowed us to determine an upper limit of the oblate component in the parent state. The complexity of the analysis required the development of a new approach in the analysis of the X-ray gated total absorption spectrum.
