Abstract: Background: Identification of proton-neutron mixed-symmetric one-quadrupole phonon excitations (the 2(ms)(+) states) of atomic nuclei provides information on the isovector part of the residual nucleon-nucleon interaction. It was predicted that the 2(ms)(+) state of particular nuclei close to the U(5) limit of the interacting boson model, in particular Ba-140, should be considerably populated by alpha-transfer reactions [C. E. Alonso et al., Phys. Rev. C 78, 017301 (2008)]. Purpose: We aim at the identification of the 2(ms)(+) mixed-symmetry state (MSS) of radioactive Ba-140 and investigate its population by the alpha-transfer reaction as a suitable tool to selectively populate MSSs and as a potential new signature for its mixed-symmetric character. Method: A gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment was performed in inverse kinematics in order to populate the 2(ms)(+) state of Ba-140 by alpha-transfer from a C-nat target on Xe-136 beam ions. The population of the candidate for the 2(ms)(+) state of Ba-140 was measured relative to the population of the 2(1)(+) state. Results: The candidate for the 2(ms)(+) state of Ba-140 was populated by a transfer three times weaker than predicted. Another 2(+) state that can be ruled out as the MSS was in turn as strongly populated by the a transfer as predicted for the MSS. Conclusions: The relative population of 2(+) states by alpha-transfer cannot serve as a new signature for MSSs, since other 2(+) states are also strongly populated. Nevertheless, the substantial population of the MSS candidate of Ba-140 by alpha transfer qualifies this type of reaction as suitable tool to excite MSSs and study their electromagnetic decay properties.

Stanja, J. et al, Agramunt, J., & Algora, A. (2013). Mass spectrometry and decay spectroscopy of isomers across the Z=82 shell closure. Phys. Rev. C, 88(5), 054304–7pp.
Abstract: Recent results from a measurement campaign studying the isomerism in neutron-deficient Tl isotopes are presented. The measurements make use of a nuclear spectroscopy setup coupled to the high-resolution Penningtrap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at CERN's radioactive ion-beam facility ISOLDE. The mass values of Tl-190,Tl-194 are improved and a mass-spin-state assignment is carried out. An additional mass measurement of the grandparent nuclide At-198 allows the deduction of the spin-state ordering in Tl-190. As a result, the excitation energies of the isomers in both Tl isotopes are determined for the first time to Eex(Tl-194) = 260(15) keV and E-ex(Tl-190) = 89(12) keV. Furthermore, this allows anchoring of the ground-state and isomer masses of Bi-194, Fr-202, and Ac-206, which are linked by two independent a-decay chains.

Steer, S. J. et al, & Estevez, M. E. (2011). Isomeric states observed in heavy neutron-rich nuclei populated in the fragmentation of a (208)Pb beam. Phys. Rev. C, 84(4), 044313–22pp.
Abstract: Heavy neutron-rich nuclei were populated via the fragmentation of a E/A = 1 GeV (208)(82)Pb beam. Secondary fragments were separated and identified and subsequently implanted in a passive stopper. By the detection of delayed gamma rays, isomeric decays associated with these nuclei have been identified. A total of 49 isomers were detected, with the majority of them observed for the first time. The newly discovered isomers are in (204,205)(80)Hg, (201,202,204,205)(79)Au, (197,203,204)(78)Pt, (195,199-203)(77)Ir, (193,197-199)(76)Os, (196)(75)Re, (190,191)(74)W, and (189)(73)Ta. Possible level schemes are constructed and the structure of the nuclei discussed. To aid the interpretation, shell-model as well as BCS calculations were performed.

Abstract: The neutron-deficient nucleus Kr-75 has been studied in two EUROBALL experiments. The analysis yielded a considerably extended level scheme including two newly observed excited high spin bands. The results are interpreted in the framework of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky approach. The calculations compare well to the experimentally established level scheme and predict the nucleus to be mainly prolate or triaxially deformed at high spin. Evidence for an oblate-prolate shape coexistence could not be found at high spin.

Szilner, S. et al, & Gadea, A. (2011). Interplay between single-particle and collective excitations in argon isotopes populated by transfer reactions. Phys. Rev. C, 84(1), 014325–7pp.
Abstract: New gamma transitions have been identified in argon isotopes in (40)Ar + (208)Pb multiple transfer reactions by exploiting, in a fragment-gamma measurement, the new generation of magnetic spectrometers based on trajectory reconstruction coupled to large gamma arrays. The coupling of single-particle degrees of freedom to nuclear vibration quanta was discussed. The interpretation of the newly observed states within a particle-phonon coupling picture was used to consistently follow, via their excitation energies, the evolution of collectivity in odd Ar isotopes. The proposed level schemes are supported by the results of sd-pf shell-model calculations, which have been also employed to evaluate the strength functions of the populated states.

Szilner, S. et al, & Gadea, A. (2013). Structure of chlorine isotopes populated by heavy ion transfer reactions. Phys. Rev. C, 87(5), 054322–12pp.
Abstract: Neutron-rich chlorine isotopes were populated in the Ar-40 + Pb-208 multiple transfer reaction via the -1p channels in a fragment-gamma coincident measurement employing the Prisma-Clara setup. New gamma transitions have been identified and, together with already available data, level schemes have been revised and compared with the results of large-scale sd-pf shell-model calculations. The evolution of the energy splitting between the s(1/2) and d(3/2) orbitals and the increased mixing of different proton configurations in the populated Cl isotopic chain have been deduced by inspecting the shell-model wave functions.

Taprogge, J. et al, Gadea, A., & Montaner-Piza, A. (2015). beta decay of Cd-129 and excited states in In-129. Phys. Rev. C, 91(5), 054324–11pp.
Abstract: The beta decay of Cd-129, produced in the relativistic fission of a U-238 beam, was experimentally studied at the RIBF facility at the RIKEN Nishina Center. From the gamma radiation emitted after the beta decays, a level scheme of In-129 was established comprising 31 excited states and 69 gamma-ray transitions. The experimentally determined level energies are compared to state-of-the-art shell-model calculations. The half-lives of the two beta-decaying states in Cd-129 were deduced and the beta feeding to excited states in In-129 were analyzed. It is found that, as in most cases in the Z < 50, N <= 82 region, both decays are dominated by the nu 0g(7/2) -> pi 0g(9/2) Gamow-Teller transition, although the contribution of first-forbidden transitions cannot be neglected.

Abstract: Differential cross sections of neutral pions emitted in Ta-181+Au-197 collisions at a beam energy of 39.5A Me V have been measured with the two-arm photon spectrometer (TAPS). The kinetic energy and transverse momentum spectra of neutral pions cannot be properly described in the framework of the thermal model, nor when the reabsorption of pions is accounted for in a phenomenological model. However, high energy and high momentum tails of the pion spectra can be well fitted through thermal distributions with unexpectedly soft temperature parameters below 10 MeV.

Tolos, L., Molina, R., Oset, E., & Ramos, A. (2010). (K)over-bar* mesons in dense matter. Phys. Rev. C, 82(4), 045210–12pp.
Abstract: We study the properties of (K) over bar* mesons in nuclear matter using a unitary approach in coupled channels within the framework of the local hidden gauge formalism and incorporating the (K) over bar pi decay channel in matter. The in-medium (K) over bar *N interaction accounts for Pauli blocking effects and incorporates the (K) over bar* self-energy in a self-consistent manner. We also obtain the (K) over bar* (off-shell) spectral function and analyze its behavior at finite density and momentum. At a normal nuclear matter density, the (K) over bar* meson feels a moderately attractive potential, while the (K) over bar* width becomes five times larger than in free space. We estimate the transparency ratio of the gamma A -> K+K*(-) A` reaction, which we propose as a feasible scenario at the present facilities to detect changes in the properties of the (K) over bar* meson in nuclear medium.

Abstract: We investigate the decay of Br-87,Br-88 and Rb-94 using total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy. These important fission products are beta-delayed neutron emitters. Our data show considerable beta gamma intensity, so far unobserved in high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy, from states at high excitation energy. We also find significant differences with the beta intensity that can be deduced from existing measurements of the beta spectrum. We evaluate the impact of the present data on reactor decay heat using summation calculations. Although the effect is relatively small it helps to reduce the discrepancy between calculations and integral measurements of the photon component for U-235 fission at cooling times in the range 1-100 s. We also use summation calculations to evaluate the impact of present data on reactor antineutrino spectra. We find a significant effect at antineutrino energies in the range of 5 to 9 MeV. In addition, we observe an unexpected strong probability for. emission from neutron unbound states populated in the daughter nucleus. The. branching is compared to Hauser-Feshbach calculations, which allow one to explain the large value for bromine isotopes as due to nuclear structure. However the branching for Rb-94, although much smaller, hints of the need to increase the radiative width gamma by one order of magnitude. This increase in gamma would lead to a similar increase in the calculated (n, gamma) cross section for this very neutron-rich nucleus with a potential impact on r process abundance calculations.
