Title Quantum-corrected rotating black holes and naked singularities in (2+1) dimensions Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 99 Issue 10 Pages 104023 - 39pp
Keywords
Abstract We analytically investigate the perturbative effects of a quantum conformally coupled scalar field on rotating (2 + 1)-dimensional black holes and naked singularities. In both cases we obtain the quantum-back-reacted metric analytically. In the black hole case, we explore the quantum corrections on different regions of relevance for a rotating black hole geometry. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the ergosphere, as well as to a reduction of the angular velocity compared to their corresponding unperturbed values. Quantum corrections also give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no evidence of the appearance of a superradiant instability. In the naked singularity case, quantum effects lead to the formation of a horizon that hides the conical defect, thus turning it into a black hole. The fact that these effects occur not only for static but also for spinning geometries makes a strong case for the role of quantum mechanics as a cosmic censor in Nature.

Title Cosmological lepton asymmetry with a nonzero mixing angle theta(13) Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 86 Issue 2 Pages 023517 - 11pp
Keywords
Abstract While the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is nowadays well measured by cosmological observations, the bounds on the lepton asymmetry in the form of neutrinos are still significantly weaker. We place limits on the relic neutrino asymmetries using some of the latest cosmological data, taking into account the effect of flavor oscillations. We present our results for two different values of the neutrino mixing angle theta(13), and show that for large theta(13) the limits on the total neutrino asymmetry become more stringent, diluting even large initial flavor asymmetries. In particular, we find that the present bounds are still dominated by the limits coming from big bang nucleosynthesis, while the limits on the total neutrino mass from cosmological data are essentially independent of theta(13). Finally, we perform a forecast for Cosmic Origins Explorer, taken as an example of a future cosmic microwave background experiment, and find that it could improve the limits on the total lepton asymmetry approximately by up to a factor 6.6.

Title Electroweak precision observables at one loop in Higgsless models Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 83 Issue 5 Pages 053010 - 9pp
Keywords
Abstract We study the viability of generic Higgsless models at low energies when compliance with electroweak precision observables and unitarity constraints up to the TeV scale are imposed. Our analysis shows that consistency with S and T can be achieved at the one-loop level even with a single light vector state, m(V) less than or similar to 500 GeV. However, this scenario turns out to be strongly disfavored when direct resonance searches at the Tevatron are also taken into account. We show that a fully consistent picture can be obtained if an axial state is introduced. Interestingly, mV is still predicted to be light (below 1 TeV) while typical values of m(A) span over the window 1.2m(V) <= m(A) <= 1.4m(V). Our results for the vector channel are rather robust and well within the reach of present-day colliders, while the axial channel is more loosely constrained.

Title Production of Lambda(0), (Lambda)over-bar(0), Xi(+/-), and Omega(+/-) hyperons in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 86 Issue 1 Pages 012002 - 10pp

Abstract We report a set of measurements of inclusive invariant p(T) differential cross sections of Lambda(0), (Lambda) over bar (0), Xi(+/-), and Omega(+/-) hyperons reconstructed in the central region with pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1 and p(T) up to 10 GeV/c. Events are collected with a minimum-bias trigger in p<(p)over bar> collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using the CDF II detector at the Tevatron Collider. As p(T) increases, the slopes of the differential cross sections of the three particles are similar, which could indicate a universality of the particle production in p(T). The invariant differential cross sections are also presented for different charged-particle multiplicity intervals.

Title Measurement of the B- lifetime using a simulation free approach for trigger bias correction Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 83 Issue 3 Pages 032008 - 30pp
Keywords
Abstract The collection of a large number of B-hadron decays to hadronic final states at the CDF II Detector is possible due to the presence of a trigger that selects events based on track impact parameters. However, the nature of the selection requirements of the trigger introduces a large bias in the observed proper-decay-time distribution. A lifetime measurement must correct for this bias, and the conventional approach has been to use a Monte Carlo simulation. The leading sources of systematic uncertainty in the conventional approach are due to differences between the data and the Monte Carlo simulation. In this paper, we present an analytic method for bias correction without using simulation, thereby removing any uncertainty due to the differences between data and simulation. This method is presented in the form of a measurement of the lifetime of the B- using the mode B- -> D-0 pi(-). The B- lifetime is measured as tau(-)(B) = 1.663 +/- 0.023 +/- 0.015 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This new method results in a smaller systematic uncertainty in comparison to methods that use simulation to correct for the trigger bias.

Title Measurement of the t(t)over-bar production cross section with an in situ calibration of b-jet identification efficiency Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 83 Issue 7 Pages 071102 - 8pp

Abstract A measurement of the top-quark pair-production cross section in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.12 fb(-1) collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab is presented. Decays of top-quark pairs into the final states ev + jets and μv+ jets are selected, and the cross section and the b-jet identification efficiency are determined using a new measurement technique which requires agreement between the measured cross sections with exactly one and with multiple identified b quarks from the top-quark decays. Assuming a top-quark mass of 175 GeV/c(2), a cross section of 8.5 +/- 0.6(stat) +/- 0.7(syst)pb is measured.

Title Updated search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay D-0 -> mu(+)mu(-) in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 82 Issue 9 Pages 091105 - 8pp

Abstract We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay D-0 -> mu(+)mu(-) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using 360 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A displaced vertex trigger selects long-lived D-0 candidates in the mu(+)mu(-), pi(+)pi(-), and K-pi(+) decay modes. We use the Cabibbo-favored D-0 -> K-pi(+) channel to optimize the selection criteria in an unbiased manner, and the kinematically similar D-0 -> pi(+)pi(-) channel for normalization. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction B(D-0 -> mu(+)mu(-)) < 2.1 X 10(-7) (3.0 X 10(-7)) at the 90% (95%) confidence level.

Title Search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 82 Issue 9 Pages 092001 - 16pp

Abstract We present a search for the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 1: 96 TeV. This search was conducted within the framework of the R parity conserving minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, assuming the stop decays dominantly to a lepton, a sneutrino, and a bottom quark. We searched for events with two oppositely-charged leptons, at least one jet, and missing transverse energy in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb(-1) collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment. No significant evidence of a stop quark signal was found. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level in the stop quark versus sneutrino mass plane are set. Stop quark masses up to 180 GeV/c(2) are excluded for sneutrino masses around 45 GeV/c(2), and sneutrino masses up to 116 GeV/c(2) are excluded for stop quark masses around 150 GeV/c(2).

Abstract We present results of a search for anomalous production of two photons together with an electron, muon, tau lepton, missing transverse energy, or jets using p (p) over bar collision data from 1.1-2.0 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The event yields and kinematic distributions are examined for signs of new physics without favoring a specific model of new physics. The results are consistent with the standard model expectations. Title Diffractive W and Z production at the Fermilab Tevatron Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 82 Issue 11 Pages 112004 - 10pp
Keywords
Abstract We report on a measurement of the fraction of events with a W or Z boson which are produced diffractively in (p) over barp collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV, using data from 0.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector equipped with a Roman- pot spectrometer that detects the (p) over bar from (p) over bar + p -> (p) over bar + [X + W/Z]. We find that (1.00 +/- 0.11)% of Ws and (0.88 +/- 0.22)% of Zs are produced diffractively in a region of antiproton or proton fractional momentum loss xi of 0.03 < xi < 0.10 and 4-momentum transferred squared t of -1 < t < 0 (GeV/c)(2), where we account for the events in which the proton scatters diffractively while the antiproton dissociates, (p) over bar + p -> [X + W/Z] + p, by doubling the measured proton dissociation fraction. We also report on searches for W and Z production in double Pomeron exchange, (p) over bar + p -> [X + W/Z] + p, and on exclusive Z production, (p) over bar + p -> (p) over bar + Z + p. No signal is seen above background for these processes, and comparisons are made with expectations.
