Abstract: We derive lower bounds on the variance of estimators in quantum metrology by choosing test observables that define constraints on the unbiasedness of the estimator. The quantum bounds are obtained by analytical optimization over all possible quantum measurements and estimators that satisfy the given constraints. We obtain hierarchies of increasingly tight bounds that include the quantum Cramer-Rao bound at the lowest order. In the opposite limit, the quantum Barankin bound is the variance of the locally best unbiased estimator in quantum metrology. Our results reveal generalizations of the quantum Fisher information that are able to avoid regularity conditions and identify threshold behavior in quantum measurements with mixed states, caused by finite data.

Abstract: The lepton flavor asymmetries of the Universe are observationally almost unconstrained before the onset of neutrino oscillations. We calculate the cosmic trajectory during the cosmic QCD epoch in the presence of large lepton flavor asymmetries. By including QCD thermodynamic quantities derived from functional QCD methods in our calculation, our work reveals for the first time the possibility of a first-order cosmic QCD transition. We specify the required values of the lepton flavor asymmetries for which a first-order transition occurs for a number of different benchmark scenarios.

Abstract: Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in atomic nuclei are sensitive to both nuclear shell structure and effective residual interactions. The nuclear GT excitations were studied for the mass number A = 42, 46, 50, and 54 “f-shell” nuclei in (He-3, t) charge-exchange reactions. In the Ca-42 -> Sc-42 reaction, most of the GT strength is concentrated in the lowest excited state at 0.6 MeV, suggesting the existence of a low-energy GT phonon excitation. As A increases, a high-energy GT phonon excitation develops in the 6-11 MeV region. In the Fe-54 -> Co-54 reaction, the high-energy GT phonon excitation mainly carries the GT strength. The existence of these two GT phonon excitations are attributed to the 2 fermionic degrees of freedom in nuclei.

Abstract: A novel method for the direct measurement of the elusive magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau lepton is presented. The experimental approach relies on the production of tau(+) leptons from D-s(+) -> tau(+)nu(tau) decays, originating in fixed-target collisions at the LHC. A sample of polarized tau(+)leptons is kinematically selected and subsequently channeled in a bent crystal. The magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau(+) lepton are measured by determining the rotation of the spin-polarization vector induced by the intense electromagnetic field between crystal atomic planes. The experimental technique is discussed along with the expected sensitivities.

Abstract: The ARCADE 2 Collaboration has recently measured an isotropic radio emission which is significantly brighter than the expected contributions from known extra-galactic sources. The simplest explanation of such excess involves a "new'' population of unresolved sources which become the most numerous at very low (observationally unreached) brightness. We investigate this scenario in terms of synchrotron radiation induced by weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) annihilations or decays in extra-galactic halos. Intriguingly, for light-mass WIMPs with a thermal annihilation cross section, the level of expected radio emission matches the ARCADE observations.

Abstract: We determine the gravitational interaction between two compact bodies up to the sixth power in Newton's constant, G(N), in the static limit. This result is achieved within the effective field theory approach to general relativity, and exploits a manifest factorization property of static diagrams which allows us to derive static post Newtonian (PN) contributions of (2n + 1) order in terms of lower order ones. We recompute in this fashion the 1PN and 3PN static potential, and present the novel 5PN contribution.

Abstract: A search is made for potential ccc over bar c over bar tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four ffiffi muon final state using proton-proton collision data at p s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb-1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J lig +J lig -4 μand J lig + ig(2S) -4 mu, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J lig channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J lig + ig(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Abstract: This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV Pb thorn Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72 nb(-1) and 257 pb(-1) of Pb thorn Pb and pp data, respectively. The large-radius jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm using a radius parameter of R = 1.0, by reclustering anti-k(t) R = 0.2 jets, and are measured over the transverse momentum (p(T)) kinematic range of 158 < p(T) < 1000 GeV and absolute pseudorapidity |y| < 2.0. The large-radius jet constituents are further reclustered using the k(t) algorithm in order to obtain the splitting parameters, root d(12) and Delta R-12, which characterize the transverse momentum scale and angular separation for the hardest splitting in the jet, respectively. The nuclear modification factor, R-AA, obtained by comparing the Pb thorn Pb jet yields to those in pp collisions, is measured as a function of jet transverse momentum (p(T)) and root d(12) or Delta R-12. A significant difference in the quenching of large-radius jets having single subjet and those with more complex substructure is observed. Systematic comparison of jet suppression in terms of R-AA for different jet definitions is also provided. Presented results support the hypothesis that jets with hard internal splittings lose more energy through quenching and provide a new perspective for understanding the role of jet structure in jet suppression.

Abstract: Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+ Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb + Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36 nb-1 of p+ Pb and 3.6 pb-1 of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p(T)(ch) > 0.5 GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p(t)(je) T > 30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+ Pb and pp collisions, IpPb, are reported. The collision centrality of p+ Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The IpPb values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p(T )(ch)> 4 GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+ Pb collisions.

Abstract: A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139 fb(-1) of vs = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W ?N μor W -Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. No signal is observed, and limits are set on the squared mixing parameters of the N with the left-handed neutrino states for the N mass range 3 GeV < m(N) < 15 GeV. For the first time, limits are given for both single-flavor and multiflavor mixing scenarios motivated by neutrino flavor oscillation results for both the normal and inverted neutrino-mass hierarchies.
