Title Simulations and developments of the Low Energy Neutron detector Array LENA Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research A Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A
Volume 659 Issue 1 Pages 411-418
Keywords Monte Carlo simulations; Charge-exchange reactions; Scintillation detectors; Neutron detector
Abstract Prototypes of the Low Energy Neutron detector Array (LENA) have been tested and compared with detailed GEANT simulations. LENA will consist of plastic scintillation bars with the dimensions 1000 x 45 x 10 mm(3). The tests have been performed with gamma-ray sources and neutrons originating from the neutron-induced fission of (235)U. The simulations agreed very well with the measured response and were therefore used to simulate the response to mono-energetic neutrons with different detection thresholds. LENA will be used to detect low-energy neutrons from (p,n)-type reactions with low momentum transfer foreseen at the R(3)B and EXL setups at FAIR, Darmstadt.

Title Digital pulse-timing technique for the neutron detector array NEDA Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research A Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A
Volume 775 Issue Pages 71-76
Keywords Digital timing; Constant fraction discriminator; Liquid scintillator; BC501A; Neutron detector; NEDA
Abstract A new digital pulse-timing algorithm, to be used with the future neutron detector array NEDA, has been developed and tested. The time resolution of four 5 in diameter photomultiplier tubes (XP4512, R4144, R11833-100, and ET9390-kb), coupled to a cylindrical 5 in by 5 in BC501A liquict scintillator detector was measured by employing digital sampling electronics and a constant fraction discriminator (CFD) algorithm. The zero crossing of the CM algorithm was obtained with a cubic spline interpolation, which was continuous up to the second derivative. The performance of the algorithm was studied at sampling rates of 500 MS/s and 200 MS/s. The time resolution obtained with the digital electronics was compared to the values acquired with a standard analog CFD. The result of this comparison shows that the time resolution from the analog and the digital measurements at 500 MS/s and at 200 MS/s are within 15% for all the tested photomultiplier tubes.

Title The ORNL analysis technique for extracting beta-delayed multi-neutron branching ratios with BRIKEN Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research A Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A
Volume 911 Issue Pages 79-86
Keywords Neutron detectors; Multi-neutron emission data analysis
Abstract Many choices are available in order to evaluate large radioactive decay networks. There are many parameters that influence the calculated beta-decay delayed single and multi-neutron emission branching fractions. We describe assumptions about the decay model, background, and other parameters and their influence on beta-decay delayed multi-neutron emission analysis. An analysis technique, the ORNL BRIKEN analysis procedure, for determining beta-delayed multi-neutron branching ratios in beta-neutron precursors produced by means of heavy-ion fragmentation is presented. The technique is based on estimating the initial activities of zero, one, and two neutrons occurring in coincidence with an ion-implant and beta trigger. The technique allows one to extract beta-delayed multi-neutron decay branching ratios measured with the He-3 BRIKEN neutron counter. As an example, two analyses of the beta-neutron emitter Cu-77 based on different a priori assumptions are presented along with comparisons to literature values.

Title High voltage in noble liquids for high energy physics Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
Volume 9 Issue Pages T08004 - 57pp
Keywords Noble liquid detectors (scintillation, ionization, double-phase); Neutrino detectors; Neutron detectors (cold, thermal, fast neutrons); Dark Matter detectors (WIMPs, axions, etc.)
Abstract A workshop was held at Fermilab November 8-9, 2013 to discuss the challenges of using high voltage in noble liquids. The participants spanned the fields of neutrino, dark matter, and electric dipole moment physics. All presentations at the workshop were made in plenary sessions. This document summarizes the experiences and lessons learned from experiments in these fields at developing high voltage systems in noble liquids.

Title Beta Decay Studies of Neutron Rich Nuclei Using Total Absorption Gamma-ray Spectroscopy and Delayed Neutron Measurements Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Journal of the Korean Physical Society Abbreviated Journal J. Korean Phys. Soc.
Volume 59 Issue 2 Pages 1499-1502
Keywords Beta decay; Delayed neutron emission; Total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy; Neutron detectors; Nuclear technology; Nuclear astrophysics
Abstract A complete characterisation of the beta-decay of neutron-rich nuclei can be obtained from the measurement of beta-delayed gamma rays and, whenever the process is energetically possible, beta-delayed neutrons. The accurate determination of the beta-intensity distribution and the beta-delayed neutron emission probability is of great relevance in the fields of reactor technology and nuclear astrophysics. A programme for combined measurements using the total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy technique and both neutron counters and neutron time-of-flight spectrometers is presented.
