Title Measurement of the H→γγ and H→ZZ→4l cross-sections in pp collisions at √s = 13.6 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication European Physical Journal C Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. C
  Volume 84 Issue 1 Pages 78 - 34pp

Abstract The inclusive Higgs boson production cross-section is measured in the di-photon and the ZZ -> 4l decay channels using 31.4 and 29.0 fb-1 of pp collision data respectively, collected with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13.6 TeV. To reduce the model dependence, the measurement in each channel is restricted to a particle-level phase space that closely matches the channel's detector-level kinematic selection, and it is corrected for detector effects. These measured fiducial cross-sections are sigma fid, gamma gamma= 76-13+14 fb, and sigma fid,4l= 2.80+/- 0.74 fb, in agreement with the corresponding Standard Model predictions of 67.6 +/- 3.7 fb and 3.67 +/- 0.19 fb. Assuming Standard Model acceptances and branching fractions for the two channels, the fiducial measurements are extrapolated to the full phase space yielding total cross-sections of sigma (pp -> H)=67-11+12 pb and 46 +/- 12 pb at 13.6 TeV from the di-photon and ZZ -> 4l measurements respectively. The two measurements are combined into a total cross-section measurement of sigma (pp -> H)=58.2 +/- 8.7 pb, to be compared with the Standard Model prediction of sigma (pp -> H)SM=59.9 +/- 2.6 pb.

Abstract A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H -> ZZ* -> 4l and H -> gamma gamma decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11 +/- 0.09(stat) +/- 0.06(syst) = 125.11 +/- 0.11 GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Title Measurement of substructure-dependent jet suppression in Pb plus Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
  Volume 107 Issue 5 Pages 054909 - 32pp
  Keywords
Abstract The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider has been used to measure jet substructure modification and suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy root sNN = 5.02 TeV in comparison with proton-proton (pp) collisions at root s = 5.02 TeV. The Pb+Pb data, collected in 2018, have an integrated luminosity of 1.72 nb(-1), while the pp data, collected in 2017, have an integrated luminosity of 260 pb(-1). Jets used in this analysis are clustered using the anti-k(t) algorithm with a radius parameter R = 0.4. The jet constituents, defined by both tracking and calorimeter information, are used to determine the angular scale rg of the first hard splitting inside the jet by reclustering them using the Cambridge-Aachen algorithm and employing the soft-drop grooming technique. The nuclear modification factor, RAA, used to characterize jet suppression in Pb+Pb collisions, is presented differentially in rg, jet transverse momentum, and in intervals of collision centrality. The RAA value is observed to depend significantly on jet r(g). Jets produced with the largest measured r(g) are found to be twice as suppressed as those with the smallest rg in central Pb+Pb collisions. The RAA values do not exhibit a strong variation with jet p(T) in any of the rg intervals. The r(g) and p(T) dependence of jet RAA is qualitatively consistent with a picture of jet quenching arising from coherence and provides the most direct evidence in support of this approach.

Title Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 132 Issue 13 Pages 131802 - 23pp
  Keywords
Abstract This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V = W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in ffiffiproton-proton collisions at root root s= 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137fb(-1). The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into b (b) over bar. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ= 1.4(-0.9)(+1.0) and the corresponding cross section is 3.1 +/- 1.3(stat)(-1.4)(+1.8) (syst) pb.

Title Measurement of the Azimuthal Angle Dependence of Inclusive Jet Yields in Pb plus Pb Collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV with the ATLAS Detector Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 111 Issue 15 Pages 152301 - 18pp

Abstract Measurements of the variation of inclusive jet suppression as a function of relative azimuthal angle, Delta phi, with respect to the elliptic event plane provide insight into the path-length dependence of jet quenching. ATLAS has measured the Delta phi dependence of jet yields in 0.14 nb(-1) of root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb + Pb collisions at the LHC for jet transverse momenta p(T) > 45 GeV in different collision centrality bins using an underlying event subtraction procedure that accounts for elliptic flow. The variation of the jet yield with Delta phi was characterized by the parameter, nu(jet)(2), and the ratio of out-of-plane (Delta phi similar to pi/2) to in-plane (Delta phi similar to 0) yields. Nonzero nu(jet)(2) values were measured in all centrality bins for p(T) < 160 GeV. The jet yields are observed to vary by as much as 20% between in-plane and out-of-plane directions.

Abstract A search for Higgs boson decays into a Z boson and a light resonance in two-lepton plus jet events is performed, using a pp collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) collected at root s = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The resonance considered is a light boson with a mass below 4 GeV from a possible extended scalar sector or a charmonium state. Multivariate discriminants are used for the event selection and for evaluating the mass of the light resonance. No excess of events above the expected background is found. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the Riggs boson production cross section times branching fraction to a Z boson and the signal resonance, with values in the range 17-340 pb (16(-5)(+6)-320(-90)(+130) pb) for the different light spin-0 boson mass and branching fraction hypotheses, and with values of 110 and 100 pb (100(-30)(+40) and 100(-30)(+40) pb) for the eta(c) and J/psi hypotheses, respectively.

Title Performance of the ATLAS RPC detector and Level-1 muon barrel trigger at root s=13 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 16 Issue 7 Pages P07029 - 64pp

Abstract The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) employs a trigger system consisting of a first-level hardware trigger (L1) and a software-based high-level trigger. The L1 muon trigger system selects muon candidates, assigns them to the correct LHC bunch crossing and classifies them into one of six transverse-momentum threshold classes. The L1 muon trigger system uses resistive-plate chambers (RPCs) to generate the muon-induced trigger signals in the central (barrel) region of the ATLAS detector. The ATLAS RPCs are arranged in six concentric layers and operate in a toroidal magnetic field with a bending power of 1.5 to 5.5 Tm. The RPC detector consists of about 3700 gas volumes with a total surface area of more than 4000 m(2). This paper reports on the performance of the RPC detector and L1 muon barrel trigger using 60.8 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Detector and trigger performance are studied using Z boson decays into a muon pair. Measurements of the RPC detector response, efficiency, and time resolution are reported. Measurements of the L1 muon barrel trigger efficiencies and rates are presented, along with measurements of the properties of the selected sample of muon candidates. Measurements of the RPC currents, counting rates and mean avalanche charge are performed using zero-bias collisions. Finally, RPC detector response and efficiency are studied at different high voltage and front-end discriminator threshold settings in order to extrapolate detector response to the higher luminosity expected for the High Luminosity LHC.

Title Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson into b(b)over-bar and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2022 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.

Keywords Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments); Supersymmetry; Beyond Standard Model
Abstract A search for the exotic decay of the Higgs boson (H) into a b (b) over bar resonance plus missing transverse momentum is described. The search is performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using 139 fb(-1) of pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV. The search targets events from ZH production in an NMSSM scenario where H -> chi(similar to 0)(2)chi(similar to 0)(1), with chi(similar to 0)(2) -> a chi(similar to 0)(1), where a is a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson and chi(similar to 0)(1,)(2) are the two lightest neutralinos. The decay of the a boson into a pair of b-quarks results in a peak in the dijet invariant mass distribution. The final-state signature consists of two leptons, two or more jets, at least one of which is identified as originating from a b-quark, and missing transverse momentum. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations and upper limits are set on the product of cross section times branching ratio for a three-dimensional scan of the masses of the chi(similar to 0)(2), chi(similar to 0)(1) and a boson.

Abstract A search optimized for new heavy particles decaying to two b-quarks and produced in association with additional b-quarks is reported. The sensitivity is improved by b-tagging at least one lower-pT jet in addition to the two highest-pT jets. The data used in this search correspond to an integrated luminosity of 103 fb-1 collected with a dedicated trijet trigger during the 2017 and 2018 pffisffi = 13 TeV proton-proton collision runs with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search looks for resonant peaks in the b-tagged dijet invariant mass spectrum over a smoothly falling background. The background is estimated with an innovative data-driven method based on orthonormal functions. The observed b-tagged dijet invariant mass spectrum is compatible with the background-only hypothesis. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on a heavy vector-boson production cross section times branching ratio to a pair of b-quarks are derived.
