Abstract (down) Using data recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, a search for evidence of extra spatial dimensions has been performed through an analysis of the diphoton final state. The analysis uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.12 fb(-1) of root s = 7 TeV proton-proton collisions. The diphoton invariant mass (m(gamma gamma)) spectrum is observed to be in good agreement with the expected Standard Model background. In the large extra dimension scenario of Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali, the results provide 95% CL lower limits on the fundamental Planck scale between 2.27 and 3.53 TeV, depending on the number of extra dimensions and the theoretical formalism used. The results also set 95% CL lower limits on the lightest Randall-Sundrum graviton mass of between 0.79 and 1.85 TeV, for values of the dimensionless coupling k/(M) over bar (Pl) varying from 0.01 to 0.1. Combining with previously published ATLAS results from the dielectron and dimuon final states, the 95% CL lower limit on the Randall-Sundrum graviton mass for k/(M) over bar (Pl) = 0.01 (0.1) is 0.80 (1.95) TeV.

Title Further search for supersymmetry at root s=7 TeV in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum, and isolated leptons with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Abstract (down) This work presents a new inclusive search for supersymmetry (SUSY) by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 7 TeV in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum and one or more isolated electrons and/or muons. The search is based on data from the full 2011 data-taking period, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb(-1). Single-lepton and multilepton channels are treated together in one analysis. An increase in sensitivity is obtained by simultaneously fitting the number of events in statistically independent signal regions, and the shapes of distributions within those regions. A dedicated signal region is introduced to be sensitive to decay cascades of SUSY particles with small mass differences (“compressed SUSY”). Background uncertainties are constrained by fitting to the jet-multiplicity distribution in background control regions. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations, and limits are set or extended on a number of SUSY models.

Title Measurement of D*(+/-) meson production in jets from pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Abstract (down) This paper reports a measurement of D*(+/-) meson production in jets from proton- proton collisions at a center- of- mass energy of root s = 7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample recorded with the ATLAS detector with an integrated luminosity of 0.30 pb(-1) for jets with transverse momentum between 25 and 70 GeV in the pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar <2.5. D*(+/-) mesons found in jets are fully reconstructed in the decay chain: D*(+/-)-> D-0 pi(+), D-0 -> K-pi(+), and its charge conjugate. The production rate is found to be N(D*(+/-))/N(jet) = 0.025 +/- 0.001(stat.) +/- 0.004(syst.) for D*(+/-) mesons that carry a fraction z of the jet momentum in the range 0.3< z< 1. Monte Carlo predictions fail to describe the data at small values of z, and this is most marked at low jet transverse momentum.

Title Measurement of the W boson polarization in top quark decays with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 06 Issue 6 Pages 088 - 46pp
Keywords Hadron-Hadron Scattering
Abstract (down) This paper presents measurements of the polarization of W bosons in top quark decays, derived from t (t) over bar events with missing transverse momentum, one charged lepton and at least four jets, or two charged leptons and at least two jets. Data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV were collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb(-1). The measured fractions of longitudinally, left-and right-handed polarization are F-0 = 0.67 +/- 0.07, F-L = 0.32 +/- 0.04 and F-R = 0.01 +/- 0.05, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. As the polarization of the W bosons in top quark decays is sensitive to the Wtb vertex Lorentz structure and couplings, the measurements were used to set limits on anomalous contributions to the Wtb couplings.

Title Measurement of the azimuthal ordering of charged hadrons with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Abstract (down) This paper presents a study of the possible ordering of charged hadrons in the azimuthal angle relative to the beam axis in high-energy proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A spectral analysis of correlations between longitudinal and transverse components of the momentum of the charged hadrons, driven by the search for phenomena related to the structure of the QCD field, is performed. Data were recorded with the ATLAS detector at center-of-mass energies of root s = 900 GeV and root s = 7 TeV. The correlations measured in a kinematic region dominated by low-p(T) particles are not well described by conventional models of hadron production. The measured spectra show features consistent with the fragmentation of a QCD string represented by a helixlike ordered gluon chain.

Abstract (down) This paper presents a search for the t-channel exchange of an R-parity violating scalar top quark ((t) over tilde) in the e(+/-)mu(-/+) continuum using 2.1 fb(-1) of data collected by the ATLAS detector in root s = 7 TeV pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Data are found to be consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model backgrounds. Limits on R-parity-violating couplings at 95 % C.L. are calculated as a function of the scalar top mass (m((t) over tilde)). The upper limits on the production cross section for pp -> e μX, through the t-channel exchange of a scalar top quark, ranges from 170 fb for m((t) over tilde) = 95 GeV to 30 fb for m((t) over tilde) = 1000 GeV.

Title Search for resonant top quark plus jet production in t(t)over-bar + jets events with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV Type Journal Article

Abstract (down) This paper presents a search for a new heavy particle produced in association with a top or antitop quark. Two models in which the new heavy particle is a color singlet or a color triplet are considered, decaying, respectively, to (t)over-barq or tq, leading to a resonance within the t(t)over-bar + jets signature. The full 2011 ATLAS pp collision data set from the LHC (4.7 fb(-1)) is used to search for t(t)over-bar events produced in association with jets, in which one of the W bosons from the top quarks decays leptonically and the other decays hadronically. The data are consistent with the Standard Model expectation, and a new particle with mass below 430 Gev for both W' boson and color triplet models is excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming unit right-handed coupling.

Abstract (down) This paper describes searches for the pair production of first or second generation scalar leptoquarks using 35 pb(-1) of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at root s = 7 TeV. Leptoquarks are searched in events with two oppositely-charged muons or electrons and at least two jets, and in events with one muon or electron, missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. After event selection, the observed yields are consistent with the predicted backgrounds. Leptoquark production is excluded at the 95% CL for masses M-LQ < 376 (319) GeV and M-LQ < 422 (362) GeV for first and second generation scalar leptoquarks, respectively, when assuming the branching fraction of a leptoquark to a charged lepton is equal to 1.0 (0.5).

Abstract (down) This paper describes measurements of the sum of the transverse energy of particles as a function of particle pseudorapidity, eta, in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy, root s = 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are performed in the region \eta\ < 4.8 for two event classes: those requiring the presence of particles with a low transverse momentum and those requiring particles with a significant transverse momentum. In the second dataset measurements are made in the region transverse to the hard scatter. The distributions are compared to the predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, which generally tend to underestimate the amount of transverse energy at high \eta\.

Abstract (down) This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W -> e nu and W -> μnu decays, using data from pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb(-1). Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse momentum, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f(0), f(L) and f(R) over two ranges of W transverse momentum (p(T)(W)) : 35 < p(T)(W) < 50 GeV and p(T)(W) > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For p(T)(W) > 50 GeV, the values of f(0) and f(L) – f(R), averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be: f(0) = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and f(L) – f(R) = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.
