Title Observation of a Narrow Pentaquark State, P-c(4312)(+), and of the Two-Peak Structure of the P-c(4450)(+) Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 122 Issue 22 Pages 222001 - 11pp
  Keywords
Abstract (up) A narrow pentaquark state, P-c(4312)(+), decaying to J/psi p, is discovered with a statistical significance of 7.3 sigma in a data sample of Lambda(0)(b) -> J/psi pK(-) decays, which is an order of magnitude larger than that previously analyzed by the LHCb Collaboration. The P-c(4450)(+) pentaquark structure formerly reported by LHCb is confirmed and observed to consist of two narrow overlapping peaks, P-c(4440)(+) and P-c(4457)(+), where the statistical significance of this two-peak interpretation is 5.4 sigma. The proximity of the Sigma(+)(c)(D) over bar (0) and Sigma(+)(c)(D) over bar (*0) thresholds to the observed narrow peaks suggests that they play an important role in the dynamics of these states.

Title A new algorithm for identifying the flavour of B-s(0) mesons at LHCb Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 11 Issue Pages P05010 - 23pp
Keywords Analysis and statistical methods; Particle identification methods; Pattern recognition; cluster finding; calibration and fitting methods
Abstract (up) A new algorithm for the determination of the initial flavour of B-s(0) mesons is presented. The algorithm is based on two neural networks and exploits the b hadron production mechanism at a hadron collider. The first network is trained to select charged kaons produced in association with the B-s(0) meson. The second network combines the kaon charges to assign the B-s(0) flavour and estimates the probability of a wrong assignment. The algorithm is calibrated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The calibration is performed in two ways: by resolving the B-s(0)-B-s(0) flavour oscillations in B-s(0) -> D-s(-)pi(+) decays, and by analysing flavour-specific B-s2*(5840)(0) -> B+K- decays. The tagging power measured in B-s(0) -> D-s(-)pi(+) decays is found to be (1.80 +/- 0.19 ( stat) +/- 0.18 (syst))%, which is an improvement of about 50% compared to a similar algorithm previously used in the LHCb experiment.

Title Observation of a new baryon state in the Lambda(0)(b)pi(+)pi(-) mass spectrum Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 06 Issue 6 Pages 136 - 26pp
Keywords B physics; Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments); Heavy quark production; Spectroscopy
Abstract (up) A new baryon state is observed in the Lambda(0)(b)pi(+)pi(-) mass spectrum with high significance using a data sample of pp collisions, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies root s = 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). The mass and natural width of the new state are measured to be m = 6072.3 +/- 2.9 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.2 MeV, Gamma = 72 +/- 11 +/- 2 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The third uncertainty for the mass is due to imprecise knowledge of the Lambda(0)(b) baryon mass. The new state is consistent with the first radial excitation of the Lambda(0)(b) baryon, the Lambda(b)(2S)(0) resonance. Updated measurements of the masses and the upper limits on the natural widths of the previously observed Lambda(b)(5912)(0) and Lambda(b)(5920)(0) states are also reported.

Title Precision measurement of the e(+)e(-) -> K+K-(gamma) cross section with the initial-state radiation method at BABAR Type Journal Article

Abstract (up) A precise measurement of the cross section for the process e(+)e(-) -> K+K-(gamma) from threshold to an energy of 5 GeV is obtained with the initial-state radiation (ISR) method using 232 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector at e(+)e(-) center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The measurement uses the effective ISR luminosity determined from the e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)(gamma)gamma(ISR) process with the same data set. The corresponding lowest-order contribution to the hadronic vacuum polarization term in the muon magnetic anomaly is found to be a(mu)(KK,LO) = (22.93 +/- 0.18(stat) +/- 0.22(syst)) x 10(-10). The charged kaon form factor is extracted and compared to previous results. Its magnitude at large energy significantly exceeds the asymptotic QCD prediction, while the measured slope is consistent with the prediction.

Abstract (up) A precise measurement of the cross section of the process e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-) (gamma) from threshold to an energy of 3 GeV is obtained with the initial-state radiation (ISR) method using 232 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector at e(+)e(-) center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The ISR luminosity is determined from a study of the leptonic process e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-) (gamma)gamma(ISR), which is found to agree with the next-to-leading-order QED prediction to within 1.1%. The cross section for the process e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-) (gamma) is obtained with a systematic uncertainty of 0.5% in the dominant rho resonance region. The leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly calculated using the measured pi pi cross section from threshold to 1.8 GeV is (514.1 +/- 2.2(stat) +/- 3.1(sys)) x 10(-10).

Abstract (up) A precision measurement of the B-c(+) meson mass is performed using proton- proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9.0 fb(-1). The B-c(+) mesons are reconstructed via the decays B-c(+)-> J/psi pi(+), B-c(+)-> J/psi pi(+)pi(-)pi(+), B-c(+)-> J/psi pp<overbar>pi(+), B-c(+)-> J/psi D-s(+), B-c(+)-> J/psi (DK+)-K-0 and B-c(+)-> B-s(0)pi(+). Combining the results of the individual decay channels, the B-c(+) mass is measured to be 6274.47 +/- 0.27 (stat) +/- 0.17 (syst) MeV/c(2). This is the most precise measurement of the B-c(+) mass to date. The difference between the B-c(+) and B-s(0) meson masses is measured to be 907.75 +/- 0.37 (stat) +/- 0.27 (syst) MeV/c(2).

Keywords Electroweak Interaction; Forward Physics; Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Particle and Resonance Production
Abstract (up) A precision measurement of the Z boson production cross-section at root s = 13 TeV in the forward region is presented, using pp collision data collected by the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb(-1). The production cross-section is measured using Z -> mu(+)mu(-) events within the fiducial region defined as pseudorapidity 2.0 < eta < 4.5 and transverse momentum p(T) > 20 GeV/c for both muons and dimuon invariant mass 60 < M-mu μ< 120 GeV/c(2). The integrated cross-section is determined to be sigma(Z -> mu(+)mu(-)) = 196.4 +/- 0.2 +/- 1.6 +/- 3.9 pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. The measured results are in agreement with theoretical predictions within uncertainties.

  Abstract (up) A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) collected by LHCb at root s = 7 and 8 TeV, is used to reconstruct 63 +/- 9 Omega(-)(b) -> Omega(0)(c)pi(-), Omega(0)(c) -> pK(-)K(-)pi(+) decays. Using the Xi(-)(b) ->Xi(0)(c)pi(-), Xi(0)(c) -> pK(-)K(-)pi(+) decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and the absolute lifetime of the Omega(-)(b) baryon are measured to be tau(Omega b-)/tau(Xi b-) = 1.11 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.03, tau(Omega b-) = 1.78 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.06 ps, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for tau(Omega b-) only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference, m(Omega b-) – m(Xi b-), and the corresponding Omega(-)(b) mass, which yields m(Omega b-) – m(Xi b-) = 247.4 +/- 3.2 +/- 0.5 MeV/c(2), m(Omega b-) = 6045.1 +/- 3.2 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.6 MeV/c(2). These results are consistent with previous measurements.

Title Search for long-lived scalar particles in B+-> K+chi(mu(+) mu(-)) decays Type Journal Article
Year 2017 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 95 Issue 7 Pages 071101 - 9pp
  Keywords
Abstract (up) A search for a long-lived scalar particle. is performed, looking for the decay B+ -> K+chi with chi ->mu(+)mu(-) pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1), collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of root s = 7 and 8 TeV. This new scalar particle, predicted by hidden sector models, is assumed to have a narrow width. The signal would manifest itself as an excess in the dimuon invariant mass distribution over the Standard Model background. No significant excess is observed in the accessible ranges of mass 250 < m(chi) < 4700 MeV/c(2) and lifetime 0.1 < tau(chi) < 1000 ps. Upper limits on the branching fraction B(B-broken vertical bar -> K-broken vertical bar chi(mu(vertical bar) mu(-))) at 95% confidence level are set as a function of m(chi) and tau(chi), varying between 2 x 10(-10) and 10(-7). These are the most stringent limits to date. The limits are interpreted in the context of a model with a light inflaton particle.

Abstract (up) A search for B+ -> D-s(+) K+ K- decays is performed using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb(-1), collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV with the LHCb experiment. A significant signal is observed for the first time and the branching fraction is determined to be B(B+ -> D-s(+) K+ K-) = (7.1 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.7) x 10(-6), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalisation mode B+ -> D-s(+)(D) over bar (0). A search is also performed for the pure annihilation decay B+ -> D-s(+)(D) over bar (0). No significant signal is observed and a limit of B(B+ -> D-s(+) phi) < 4.9 x 10(-7) (4.2 x 10(-7)) is set on the branching fraction at 95% (90%) confidence level.
