Abstract | This paper reports inclusive and differential measurements of the t (t) over bar charge asymmetry A(C) in 20.3 fb(-1) of root s = 8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Three differential measurements are performed as a function of the invariant mass, transverse momentum and longitudinal boost of the t (t) over bar system. The t (t) over bar pairs are selected in the single-lepton channels (e or mu) with at least four jets, and a likelihood fit is used to reconstruct the t (t) over bar event kinematics. A Bayesian unfolding procedure is performed to infer the asymmetry at parton level from the observed data distribution. The inclusive t (t) over bar charge asymmetry is measured to be A(C) = 0.009 +/- 0.005 (stat. + syst.). The inclusive and differential measurements are compatible with the values predicted by the Standard Model.

Abstract | To investigate the systematics of mixed-symmetry states in N = 52 isotones, a relativistic Coulomb excitation experiment was performed during the PreSPEC campaign at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung to determine E2 transition strengths to 2(+) states of the radioactive nucleus Kr-88. Absolute transition rates could be measured towards the first and third 2+ states. For the latter a mixed-symmetry character is suggested on the basis of the indication for a strong M1 transition to the fully symmetric 2(1)(+) state, extending the knowledge of the N = 52 isotones below Z = 40. A comparison with the proton-neutron interacting boson model and shell-model predictions is made and supports the assignment.

Abstract | Two novel blends containing a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and a neat polyamide (PA) or a polyamide nanocomposite (PAN) layers were fabricated and their technological potential was evaluated during the refrigeration of cooked ham in modified atmospheres (MAP). Nanoclays were homogeneously distributed and nearly exfoliated, and they lowered significantly the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the PAN films. Due to the lower OTR, the headspace oxygen level in PAN pouches do not rise above 0.26% but it approached 2% in PA pouches at day 20. The residual oxygen levels were key for colour change during MAP storage of cooked ham. Cooked ham redness and reflectivity were stable during 27 days in PAN pouches while a strong colour deterioration took place after day 7 in PA pouches. Other parameters such as moisture content and water activity remained unaltered, and pH development was related to microbial growth and independent of the packaging polymer. The evolution of cooked ham colour in PAN was comparable to a high-barrier commercial polymer, and was acceptable for commercial sale for 27 days, showing excellent perspectives for polyamide nanocomposites in the storage of cooked ham.

Abstract | Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-ofmass energy of root sNN= 5 TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, Delta eta, and relative azimuthal angle, Delta phi, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, Delta phi approximate to 0, is observed in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < eta < 4.9. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to eta= 4.9. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

Abstract | Using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb(-1), collected by the LHCb experiment in ppcollisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV, the effective lifetime in the B-s(0) -> J/Psi eta decay mode, teff, is measured to be tau(eff) = 1.479 +/- 0.034 (stat)+/- 0.011 (syst) ps. Assuming CP conservation, tau(eff) corresponds to the lifetime of the light B-s(0) mass eigenstate. This is the first measurement of the effective lifetime in this decay mode.
