Abstract: The difference in total widths between the B-c(+) and B+ mesons is measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Through the study of the time evolution of B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+) and B+ -> J/psi K+ decays, the width difference is measured to be Delta Gamma = Gamma(Bc+) – Gamma(Bc+) = 4.46 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.07 mm(-1) c, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The known lifetime of the B+ meson is used to convert this to a precise measurement of the B-c(+) clifetime, tau(Bc+) = 513.4 +/- 11.0 +/- 5.7 fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: The distribution and orientation of energy inside jets is predicted to be an experimental handle on colour connections between the hard-scatter quarks and gluons initiating the jets. This Letter presents a measurement of the distribution of one such variable, the jet pull angle. The pull angle is measured for jets produced in t (t) over bar events with one W boson decaying leptonically and the other decaying to jets using 20.3 fb(-1) of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV at the LHC. The jet pull angle distribution is corrected for detector resolution and acceptance effects and is compared to various models.

Abstract: The DO Collaboration has recently seen a resonant-like peak in the B-s pi invariant mass spectrum, claimed to be a new state called X(5568). Using a B-s pi-B (K) over bar coupled channel analysis, implementing unitarity, and with the interaction derived from Heavy Meson Chiral Perturbation Theory, we are able to reproduce the reported spectrum, with a pole that can be associated to the claimed X(5568) state, and with mass and width in agreement with the ones reported in the experimental analysis. However, if the T-matrix regularization is performed by means of a momentum cutoff, the value for the latter needed to reproduce the spectrum is Lambda = 2.80 +/- 0.04 GeV, which is much larger than a “natural” value Lambda similar or equal to 1 GeV. In view of this, it is difficult to interpret the nature of this new state. This state would not qualify as a resonance dynamically generated by the unitarity loops. Assuming the observed peak to correspond to a physical state, we make predictions for partners in the D, D*, and B* sectors. Their observation (or lack thereof) would shed light into this issue.

Abstract: The dynamics of isolated-photon production in association with a jet in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb(-1). Photons are required to have transverse energies above 125 GeV. Jets are identified using the anti-k(t) algorithm with radius parameter R = 0.4 and required to have transverse momenta above 100 GeV. Measurements of isolated-photon plus jet cross sections are presented as functions of the leading-photon transverse energy, the leading-jet transverse momentum, the azimuthal angular separation between the photon and the jet, the photon-jet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photon-jet centre-of-mass system. Tree-level plus parton-shower predictions from SHERPA and PYTHIA as well as next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from JETPHOX and SHERPA are compared to the measurements.

Abstract: The energies and widths of several D-0 meson bound states for different nuclei are obtained using a D-meson selfenergy in the nuclear medium, which is evaluated in a selfconsistent manner using techniques of unitarized coupled-channel theory. The kernel of the meson-baryon interaction is based on a model that treats heavy pseudoscalar and heavy vector mesons on equal footing, as required by heavy quark symmetry. We find D-0 bound states in all studied nuclei, from C-12 up to Pb-208. The inclusion of vector mesons is the keystone for obtaining an attractive D-nucleus interaction that leads to the existence of D-0-nucleus bound states, as compared to previous studies based on SU(4) flavor symmetry. In some cases, the half widths are smaller than the separation of the levels, what makes possible their experimental observation by means of a nuclear reaction. This can be of particular interest for the future PANDA@FAIR physics program. We also find a D+ bound state in C-12, but it is too broad and will have a significant overlap with the energies of the continuum.

Abstract: The extended electroweak SU(3)(c) circle times SU(3)(L) circle times U(1)(X) symmetry framework “explaining” the number of fermion families is revisited. While 331-based schemes can not easily be unified within the conventional field theory sense, we show how to do it within an approach based on D-branes and (un)oriented open strings, on Calabi-Yau singularities. We show how the theory can be UV-completed in a quiver setup, free of gauge and string anomalies. Lepton and baryon numbers are perturbatively conserved, so neutrinos are Dirac-type, and their lightness results from a novel TeV scale seesaw mechanism. Dynamical violation of baryon number by exotic instantons could induce neutron-antineutron oscillations, with proton decay and other dangerous R-parity violating processes strictly forbidden. Abstract: The first measurements from proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. Data were collected in December 2009 using a minimum-bias trigger during collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 900 GeV. The charged-particle multiplicity, its dependence on transverse momentum and pseudorapidity, and the relationship between mean transverse momentum and charged-particle multiplicity are measured for events with at least one charged particle in the kinematic range vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.5 and p(T) > 500 MeV. The measurements are compared to Monte Carlo models of proton-proton collisions and to results from other experiments at the same centre-of-mass energy. The charged-particle multiplicity per event and unit of pseudorapidity eta = 0 is measured to be 1.333 +/- 0.003(stat.) +/- 0.040(syst.), which is 5-15% higher than the Monte Carlo models predict.

Abstract: The first observation of the decay eta(c)(2S) -> p (p) over bar is reported using proton -proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre -of -mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The eta c(2S) resonance is produced in the decay B+ [c (c) over bar ]K+. The product of branching fractions normalised to that for the intermediate state, R-eta c,(2s), is measured to be R-eta c,(2s) equivalent to B(B+-> eta c (2S)K+) x B(eta c(2s)(2S) -> p<<(p)over bar> )/B(B+ -> J/psi k(+)) x B(J/psi -> p<<(p)over bar> ) = (1.58 +/- 0.33 +/- 0.09) x 10(-2), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No signals for the decays B+ -> X(3872)(-> p (p) over bar )K+ and B+ psi(3770)(-> p (p) over bar )K+ are seen, and the 95% confidence level upper limits on their relative branching ratios are found to be R-x(3872) < 0.25 x 10(-2) and R-psi(3770) < 0.10. In addition, the mass differences between the nc(1S) and the J/psi states, between the eta(c)(2S) and the eta(c)(2S) states, and the natural width of the psi(1S) are measured as M-J/psi – M-eta c(7s)= 110.2 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.9 MeV, M psi(2S) – M-eta c (2S) = 52.5 +/- 1.7 +/- 0.6 MeV, Gamma(eta c) (1s) = 34.0 +/- 1.9 +/- 1.3 MeV.

Abstract: The flavour structure of the general Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) is analysed and a detailed study of the parameter space is presented, showing that flavour mixing in the 2HDM can be parametrized by various unitary matrices which arise from the misalignment in flavour space between pairs of various Hermitian flavour matrices which can be constructed within the model. This is entirely analogous to the generation of the CKM matrix in the Standard Model (SM). We construct weak basis invariants which can give insight into the physical implications of any flavour model, written in an arbitrary weak basis (WB) in the context of 2HDM. We apply this technique to two special cases, models with MFV and models with NNI structures. In both cases non-trivial CP-odd WB invariants arise in a mass power order much smaller than what one encounters in the SM, which can have important implications for baryogenesis in the framework of the general 2HDM.

Abstract: The four-lepton (4l, l = e, mu) production cross section is measured in the mass range from 80 to 1000GeV using 20.3 fb(-1)of data in pp collisions at root s = 8 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The 4l events are produced in the decays of resonant Zand Higgs bosons and the nonresonant ZZcontinuum originating from q (q) over bar, gg, and qg initial states. A total of 476 signal candidate events are observed with a background expectation of 26.2 +/- 3.6 events, enabling the measurement of the integrated cross section and the differential cross section as a function of the invariant mass and transverse momentum of the four-lepton system. In the mass range above 180GeV, assuming the theoretical constraint on the q (q) over bar production cross section calculated with perturbative NNLO QCD and NLO electroweak corrections, the signal strength of the gluon-fusion component relative to its leading-order prediction is determined to be mu(gg) = 2.4 +/- 1.0(stat.) +/- 0.5(syst.) +/- 0.8(theory).
