Abstract: Two-neutrino double electron capture is a rare nuclear decay where two electrons are simultaneously captured from the atomic shell. For Xe-124 this process has not yet been observed and its detection would provide a new reference for nuclear matrix element calculations. We have conducted a search for two-neutrino double electron capture from the K shell of 124Xe using 7636 kg d of data from the XENON100 dark matter detector. Using a Bayesian analysis we observed no significant excess above background, leading to a lower 90% credibility limit on the half-life T-1/2 > 6.5 x 10(20) yr. We have also evaluated the sensitivity of the XENON1T experiment, which is currently being commissioned, and found a sensitivity of T-1/2 > 6.1 x 10(22) yr after an exposure of 2 t yr.

Abstract: Two-particle long-range azimuthal correlations are measured in photonuclear collisions using 1.7 nb(-1) of 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Candidate events are selected using a dedicated high-multiplicity photonuclear event trigger, a combination of information from the zero-degree calorimeters and forward calorimeters, and from pseudorapidity gaps constructed using calorimeter energy clusters and charged-particle tracks. Distributions of event properties are compared between data and Monte Carlo simulations of photonuclear processes. Two-particle correlation functions are formed using charged-particle tracks in the selected events, and a template-fitting method is employed to subtract the nonflow contribution to the correlation. Significant nonzero values of the second-and third-order flow coefficients are observed and presented as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and transverse momentum. The results are compared with flow coefficients obtained in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions in similar multiplicity ranges, and with theoretical expectations. The unique initial conditions present in this measurement provide a new way to probe the origin of the collective signatures previously observed only in hadronic collisions.

Abstract: Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations are measured in root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb + Pb, root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV p+Pb, and root s = 13 TeV pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), with total integrated luminosities of approximately 7 μb(-1), 28 nb(-1), and 65 nb(-1), respectively. The correlation function CN(eta(1),eta(2))is measured as a function of event multiplicity using charged particles in the pseudorapidity range |eta| < 2.4. The correlation function contains a significant short-range component, which is estimated and subtracted. After removal of the short-range component, the shape of the correlation function is described approximately by 1 + < a(1)(2)>(1/2) eta(1) eta(2) in all collision systems over the full multiplicity range. The values of < a(1)(2)>(1/2) are consistent for the opposite-charge pairs and same-charge pairs, and for the three collision systems at similar multiplicity. The values of < a(1)(2)>(1/2) and the magnitude of the short-range component both follow a power-law dependence on the event multiplicity. The short-range component in p + Pb collisions, after symmetrizing the proton and lead directions, is found to be smaller at a given eta than in pp collisions with comparable multiplicity.

Abstract: Using an interaction extracted from the local hidden-gauge Lagrangians, which brings together vector and pseudoscalar mesons, and the coupled channels rho N (s wave), pi N (d wave), pi Delta (s wave), and pi Delta (d wave), we look in the region ofv root s = 1400-1850 MeV and find two resonances dynamically generated by the interaction of these channels, which are naturally associated to N*(1520)(3/2(-)) and N*(1700)(3/2(-)). N*(1700)(3/2(-)) appears neatly as a pole in the complex plane. The free parameters of the theory are chosen to fit the pi N (d-wave) data. Both the real and imaginary parts of the pi N amplitude vanish in our approach in the vicinity of this resonance, which is similar to what happens in experimental determinations and which makes this signal very weak in this channel. This feature could explain why this resonance does not show up in some experimental analyses, but the situation is analogous to that of the f(0)(980) resonance, the second scalar meson after sigma[f(0)(500)] in the pi pi(d-wave) amplitude. The unitary coupled channel approach followed here, in connectionwith the experimental data, leads automatically to a pole in the 1700-MeV region and makes this second 3/2-resonance unavoidable.

Abstract: Using the Double Chooz detector, designed to measure the neutrino mixing angle theta(13), the products of mu(-) capture on C-12, C-13, N-14, and O-16 have been measured. Over a period of 489.5 days, 2.3 x 10(6) stopping cosmic mu(-) have been collected, of which 1.8 x 10(5) captured on carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen nuclei in the inner detector scintillator or acrylic vessels. The resulting isotopes were tagged using prompt neutron emission (when applicable), the subsequent beta decays, and, in some cases, beta-delayed neutrons. The most precise measurement of the rate of C-12(mu(-), nu)B-12 to date is reported: 6.57(-0.21)(+0.11) x 10(3) s(-1), or (17.35(-0.59)(+0.35))% of nuclear captures. By tagging excited states emitting gamma s, the ground state transition rate to B-12 has been determined to be 5.68(-0.23)(+0.14) x 10(3) s(-1). The heretofore unobserved reactions C-12(mu(-), nu alpha)Li-8, C-13(mu(-), nu n alpha)Li-8, and C-13(mu(-), nu n)B-12 are measured. Further, a population of beta n decays following stopping muons is identified with 5.5 sigma significance. Statistics limit our ability to identify these decays definitively. Assuming negligible production of He-8, the reaction C-13(mu(-), nu alpha)Li-9 is found to be present at the 2.7 sigma level. Limits are set on a variety of other processes.

Abstract: Using the high-resolution O-18(He-3, t)F-18 reaction at 0 degrees and at 140 MeV/nucleon, Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions were studied. A high energy resolution of 31 keV was achieved by applying dispersion matching techniques. The main part of the observed GT transition strength is concentrated in the transition to the F-18 ground state (g.s.). The absolute values of the reduced GT transition strengths, B(GT), were derived up to E-x = 12 MeV assuming proportionality between the B(GT) values and the reaction cross sections at 0 degrees. The B(GT) value obtained from the beta decay of F-18 (g.s.) -> O-18 (g.s.) was used to determine the proportionality constant. A total B(GT) of 4.06(5) was found and 76(1)% of the strength is concentrated to the ground state of F-18. The obtained B(GT) values were compared with those from the O-18(p, n) F-18 reaction and the mirror symmetric beta(+) decay of Ne-18 -> F-18. The candidates for 1(+) states with isospin T = 1 were identified by comparison with the O-18(p, p') data. The results of shell-model and quasiparticle-random-phase approximation calculations suggest constructive contributions of various configurations to the F-18 ground state, suggesting that this state is the low-energy super GT state.

Abstract: We analyze the data on cross sections and asymmetries for the pd -> eta He-3 reaction close to threshold and look for bound states of the eta He-3 system. Rather than parameterizing the scattering matrix, as is usually done, we develop a framework in which the eta He-3 optical potential is the key ingredient, and its strength, together with some production parameters, are fitted to the available experimental data. The relationship of the scattering matrix to the optical potential is established using the Bethe-Salpeter equation and the eta He-3 loop function incorporates the range of the interaction given by the empirical He-3 density. We find a local Breit-Wigner form of the eta He-3 amplitude T below threshold with a clear peak in vertical bar T vertical bar(2), which corresponds to an eta He-3 binding of about 0.3 MeV and a width of about 3 MeV. By fitting the potential we can also evaluate the eta He-3 scattering length, including its sign, thus resolving the ambiguity in the former analyses.

Abstract: We construct all SUL(3) x SUR(3) chirally invariant anomalous magnetic, i.e., involving a Pauli tensor and one-derivative, interactions of one chiral [(8, 1) circle plus (1, 8)] meson fieldwith chiral [(6, 3) circle plus (3, 6)], [(3, (3) over bar) circle plus ((3) over bar), 3], and [(8, 1) circle plus (1, 8)] baryon fields and their “mirror” images. We find strong chiral selection rules; e. g., there is only one off-diagonal chirally symmetric anomalous magnetic interaction between J = 1/2 fields belonging to the [(6, 3) circle plus (3, 6)] and the [(3, (3) over bar) circle plus ((3) over bar), 3] chiral multiplets. We also study the chiral selection rules for the anomalous magnetic interactions of the [(3, (3) over bar) circle plus ((3) over bar), 3] and the [(8, 1) circle plus (1, 8)] baryon fields. Again, no diagonal and only one off-diagonal chiral SUL(3) x SUR(3) interaction of this type is allowed, that turns out also to conserve the U-A(1) symmetry. We calculate the F/D ratios for the baryons' anomalous magnetic moments predicted by these interactions in the SU(3) symmetry limit and find that only the [(6, 3) circle plus (3, 6)]-[(3, (3) over bar) circle plus ((3) over bar), 3] one reproduces F/D = 1/3, in close proximity to the value extracted from experiment.

Abstract: We derive explicit expressions for the Landau sum rules for the case of the most general spin-dependent quasiparticle interaction including all possible tensor interactions. For pure neutron matter, we investigate the convergence of the sum rules at different orders of approximation. Employing modern nuclear Hamiltonians based on chiral effective field theory, we find that the inclusion of noncentral interactions improves the convergence of the sum rules only for low densities (n <= 0.1 fm-3). Around nuclear matter saturation density, we find that even ostensibly perturbative nuclear interactions violate the sum rules considerably. By artificially weakening the strength of the nuclear Hamiltonian, the convergence can be improved.

Abstract: We develop a model for the pp -> pi(+)d reaction based on the pp -> Delta(1232)N transition followed by Delta(1232) -> pi N' decay and posterior fusion of NN' to give the deuteron. We show that the triangle diagram depicting this process develops a triangle singularity leading to a large cross section of this reaction compared to ordinary fusion reactions. The results of the calculation also show that the process is largely dominated by the pp system in L = 2 and S = 0, which transfers J = 2 to the final pi(+)d system. This feature is shown to be well suited to provide L = 2, S = 1, and J(tot) = 3 for np in the np(I = 0) pi(-)pp reaction followed by the pp -> pi(+)d reaction, which has been proposed recently, as a means of describing the so far assumed dibaryon d* (2380) peak.
