  Title Observation of the Lambda(0)(b) -> Lambda phi decay Type Journal Article
  Year 2016 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 759 Issue Pages 282-292
  Keywords
  Abstract (up) The Lambda(0)(b) -> Lambda phi decay is observed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) recorded by the LHCb experiment. The decay proceeds at leading order via a b -> s<(s)double over bar>s loop transition and is therefore sensitive to the possible presence of particles beyond the Standard Model. A first observation is reported with a significance of 5.9 standard deviations. The value of the branching fraction is measured to be (5.18 +/- 1.04 +/- 0.35(-0.62)(+0.67)) x 10(-6), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is related to external inputs. Triple-product asymmetries are measured to be consistent with zero.

  Title Performance of pile-up mitigation techniques for jets in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV using the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

  Abstract (up) The large rate of multiple simultaneous protonproton interactions, or pile-up, generated by the Large Hadron Collider in Run 1 required the development of many new techniques to mitigate the adverse effects of these conditions. This paper describes the methods employed in the ATLAS experiment to correct for the impact of pile-up on jet energy and jet shapes, and for the presence of spurious additional jets, with a primary focus on the large 20.3 fb(-1) data sample collected at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV. The energy correction techniques that incorporate sophisticated estimates of the average pile-up energy density and tracking information are presented. Jet-to-vertex association techniques are discussed and projections of performance for the future are considered. Lastly, the extension of these techniques to mitigate the effect of pile-up on jet shapes using subtraction and grooming procedures is presented.

  Title Fast-timing study of the l-forbidden 1/2(+) -> 3/2(+) M1 transition in Sn-129 Type Journal Article

  Abstract (up) The levels in Sn-129 populated from the beta(-) decay of In-129 isomers were investigated at the ISOLDE facility of CERN using the newly commissioned ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS). The lowest 1/2(+) state and the 3/2(+) ground state in 129Sn are expected to have configurations dominated by the neutron s(1/2) (l = 0) and d(3/2) (l = 2) single-particle states, respectively. Consequently, these states should be connected by a somewhat slow l-forbidden M1 transition. Using fast-timing spectroscopy we havemeasured the half-life of the 1/2(+) 315.3-keV state, T-1/2 = 19(10) ps, which corresponds to a moderately fast M1 transition. Shell-model calculations using the CD-Bonn effective interaction, with standard effective charges and g factors, predict a 4-ns half-life for this level. We can reconcile the shell-model calculations to the measured T-1/2 value by the renormalization of the M1 effective operator for neutron holes.

  Title Canonical description of the new LHCb resonances Type Journal Article

  Abstract (up) The LHCb Collaboration has recently observed four J/psi phi structures called X(4140), X(4274), X(4500), and X(4700) in the B+ -> J/psi phi K+ decays. We study them herein using a nonrelativistic constituent quark model in which the degrees of freedom are quark-antiquark and meson-meson components. The X(4140) resonance appears as a cusp in the J/psi phi channel due to the near coincidence of the D-s(+/-) D-s(*+/-) and J/psi phi mass thresholds. The remaining three [X(4274), X(4500), and X(4700)] appear as conventional charmonium states with quantum numbers 3(3)P(1), 4(3)P(0), and 5(3)P(0), respectively, and their masses and widths are slightly modified due to their coupling with the corresponding closest meson-meson thresholds. A particular feature of our quark model is a lattice-based screened linear confining interaction that has been constrained in the light-quark sector and usually produces higher excited heavy-quark states with lower masses than standard quark model predictions.

  Title Search for two-phonon octupole excitations in Gd-146 Type Journal Article

  Abstract (up) The low-spin structure of the nearly spherical nucleus Gd-146 was studied using the Sm-144(He-4, 2n) fusion-evaporation reaction. High-statistics gamma-gamma coincidence measurements were performed at iThemba LABS with 7x10(9) gamma-gamma coincidence events recorded. Gated gamma-ray energy spectra show evidence for the 6(2)(+) -> 3(1)(-) -> 0(1)(+) cascade of E3 transitions in agreement with recent findings by Caballero and co-workers, but with a smaller branching ratio of I-gamma = 4.7(10) for the 6(2)(+) -> 3(1)(-) 1905.1 keV gamma ray. Although these findings may support octupole vibrations in spherical nuclei, sophisticated beyond mean-field calculations including angular-momentum projection are required to interpret in an appropriate way the available data due to the failure of the rotational model assumptions in this nucleus.
