Abstract |
A search for the neutrinoless, lepton-flavor violating decay of the tau lepton into three charged leptons has been performed using an integrated luminosity of 468 fb(-1) collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. In all six decay modes considered, the numbers of events found in data are compatible with the background expectations. Upper limits on the branching fractions are set in the range (1.8-3.3) x 10(-8) at 90% confidence level. |

Abstract |
A search for the Z(3930) resonance in gamma gamma production of the D (D) over bar system has been performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 384 fb(-1) recorded by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The D (D) over bar invariant mass distribution shows clear evidence of the Z(3930) state with a significance of 5.8 sigma. We determine mass and width values of (3926.7 +/- 2.7 +/- 1.1) MeV/c(2) and (21.3 +/- 6.8 +/- 3.6) MeV, respectively. A decay angular analysis provides evidence that the Z(3930) is a tensor state with positive parity and C parity (J(PC) = 2(++)); therefore we identify the Z(3930) state as the chi(c2)(2P) meson. The value of the partial width Gamma(gamma gamma) x B(Z(3930) -> D (D) over bar) is found to be (0.24 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.04) keV. |

Abstract |
A simple extension of the standard model providing Majorana magnetic moments to right-handed neutrinos is presented. The model contains, in addition to the standard model particles and right-handed neutrinos, just a singly charged scalar and a vector-like charged fermion. The phenomenology of the model is analysed and its implications in cosmology, astrophysics and lepton flavour violating processes are extracted. If light enough, the charged particles responsible for the right-handed neutrino magnetic moments could copiously be produced at the Large Hadron Collider. |

Abstract |
According to recent studies (Amin et al 2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 060503), the effect of a thermal bath may improve the performance of a quantum adiabatic search algorithm. In this paper, we compare the effects of such a thermal environment on the algorithm performance with those of a structured environment similar to the one encountered in systems coupled to an electromagnetic field that exists within a photonic crystal. Whereas for all the parameter regimes explored here, the algorithm performance is worsened by contact with a thermal environment, the picture appears to be different when one considers a structured environment. In this case we show that by tuning the environment parameters to certain regimes, the algorithm performance can actually be improved with respect to the closed system case. Additionally, the relevance of considering the dissipation rates as complex quantities is discussed in both cases. More specifically, we find that the imaginary part of the rates cannot be neglected with the usual argument that it simply amounts to an energy shift and in fact influences crucially the system dynamics. |

Abstract |
Accurate estimates of virus mutation rates are important to understand the evolution of the viruses and to combat them. However, methods of estimation are varied and often complex. Here, we critically review over 40 original studies and establish criteria to facilitate comparative analyses. The mutation rates of 23 viruses are presented as substitutions per nucleotide per cell infection (s/n/c) and corrected for selection bias where necessary, using a new statistical method. The resulting rates range from 10(-8) to 10(-6) s/n/c for DNA viruses and from 10(-6) to 10(-4) s/n/c for RNA viruses. Similar to what has been shown previously for DNA viruses, there appears to be a negative correlation between mutation rate and genome size among RNA viruses, but this result requires further experimental testing. Contrary to some suggestions, the mutation rate of retroviruses is not lower than that of other RNA viruses. We also show that nucleotide substitutions are on average four times more common than insertions/deletions (indels). Finally, we provide estimates of the mutation rate per nucleotide per strand copying, which tends to be lower than that per cell infection because some viruses undergo several rounds of copying per cell, particularly double-stranded DNA viruses. A regularly updated virus mutation rate data set will be available at www.uv.es/rsanjuan/virmut. |
