Abstract: TORCH is a novel time-of-flight detector that has been developed to provide charged-particle identification between 2 and 10 GeV/c momentum. TORCH combines arrival times from multiple Cherenkov photons produced within a 10 mm-thick quartz radiator plate, to achieve a 15 ps time-of-flight resolution per incident particle. A customised Micro-Channel Plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT) and associated readout system utilises an innovative charge-sharing technique between adjacent pixels to obtain the necessary 70 ps time resolution of each Cherenkov photon. A five-year R&D programme has been undertaken, culminating in the construction of a small-scale prototype TORCH module. In testbeams at CERN, this prototype operated successfully with customised electronics and readout system. A full analysis chain has been developed to reconstruct the data and to calibrate the detector. Results are compared to those using a commercial Planacon MCP-PMT, and single photon resolutions approaching 80 ps have been achieved. The photon counting efficiency was found to be in reasonable agreement with a GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation of the detector. The small-scale demonstrator is a precursor to a full-scale TORCH module (with a radiator plate of 660 x 1250 x 10 mm(3)), which is currently under construction.

Abstract: To study the properties of the N*(1535) and N*(1650), we calculate the mass distributions of MB in the Lambda(c) -> (K) over bar (MB)-M-0 decay, with MB = pi N(I = 1/2), eta p, and K Sigma(I = 1/2). We do this by calculating the tree-level and loop contributions, mixing pseudoscalar-baryon and vector-baryon channels using the local hidden gauge formalism. The loop contributions for each channel are calculated using the chiral unitary approach. We observe that for the eta N mass distribution only the N* (1535) is seen, with the N* (1650) contributing to the width of the curve, but for the pi N mass distribution both resonances are clearly visible. In the case of MB = K Sigma, we found that the strength of the K E mass distribution is smaller than that of the mass distributions of the pi N and eta p in the Lambda(+)(c)-> (K) over bar (0)pi N and Lambda(+)(c) -> (K) over bar (0)eta p processes, in spite of this channel having a large coupling to the N* (1650). This is because the K Sigma pair production is suppressed in the primary production from the Lambda(c) decay.

Abstract: Though the one-loop amplitudes of the Higgs boson to massless gauge bosons are finite because there is no direct interaction at tree level in the Standard Model, a well-defined regularization scheme is still required for their correct evaluation. We reanalyze these amplitudes in the framework of the four-dimensional unsubtraction and the loop-tree duality (EDU/LTD), and show how a local renormalization solves potential regularization ambiguities. The Higgs boson interactions are also used to illustrate new additional advantages of this formalism. We show that LTD naturally leads to very compact integrand expressions in four space-time dimensions of the one-loop amplitude with virtual electroweak gauge bosons. They exhibit the same functional form as the amplitudes with top quarks and charged scalars, thus opening further possibilities for simplifications in higher-order computations. Another outstanding application is the straightforward implementation of asymptotic expansions by using dual amplitudes. One of the main benefits of the LTD representation is that it is supported in a Euclidean space. This characteristic feature naturally leads to simpler asymptotic expansions.

Abstract: This work is a brief presentation of the theory based on the SU(3)(c) circle times SU(3)(L) circle times U(1)(X) gauge group in the presence of heavy leptons. Recent studies [1] have considered a set of four possible variants for the 3-3-1HL, whose content arises according to the so-denoted variable beta. Since it has been argued about the presence of stable charged particles in this sort of model, we divide the different sectors of the Lagrangian between universal and specific vertices, and conclude that the omission of beta-dependent terms in the potential may induce discrete symmetry for the versions defined by vertical bar beta vertical bar = root 3 . In the context of vertical bar beta vertical bar = 1/root 3, where the new degrees of freedom have the same standard electric charges, additional Yukawa interactions may create decay channels into the SM sector. Furthermore, motivated by a general consequence of the Goldstone theorem, a method of diagonalization by parts is introduced in the Scalar sector and provides a clarification on the definition of mass eigenstates. In summary, we develop the most complete set of terms allowed by the symmetry group and resolve their definitive pieces in order to justify the model description present in the literature.

Abstract: This work investigates the capability of TMA ((CH3)(3)N) molecules to shift the wavelength of Xe VUV emission (160-188 nm) to a longer, more manageable, wavelength (260-350 nm). Light emitted from a Xe lamp was passed through a gas chamber filled with Xe-TMA mixtures at 800 Torr and detected with a photomultiplier tube. Using bandpass filters in the proper transmission ranges, no reemitted light was observed experimentally. Considering the detection limit of the experimental system, if reemission by TMA molecules occurs, it is below 0.3% of the scintillation absorbed in the 160-188 nm range. An absorption coefficient value for xenon VUV light by TMA of 0.43 +/- 0.03 cm(-1) Torr(-1) was also obtained. These results can be especially important for experiments considering TMA as a molecular additive to Xe in large volume optical time projection chambers.
