Title Photon emission in neutral-current interactions at intermediate energies Type Journal Article

Abstract (up) Neutral-current photon emission reactions with nucleons and nuclei are studied. These processes are important backgrounds for nu(mu) -> nu(e) ((nu) over bar (mu) -> (nu) over bar (e)) appearance oscillation experiments where electromagnetic showers instigated by electrons (positrons) and photons are not distinguishable. At intermediate energies, these reactions are dominated by the weak excitation of the Delta(1232) resonance and its subsequent decay into N gamma. There are also nonresonant contributions that, close to threshold, are fully determined by the effective chiral Lagrangian of strong interactions. In addition, we have also included mechanisms mediated by nucleon excitations (N*) from the second resonance region above the Delta(1232). From these states, the contribution of the D-13 N*(1520) turns out to be sizable for (anti) neutrino energies above 1.5 GeV. We have extended the model to nuclear targets taking into account Pauli blocking, Fermi motion, and the in-medium Delta resonance broadening. We present our predictions for both the incoherent and coherent channels, showing the relevance of the nuclear corrections. We also discuss the target mass dependence of the cross sections. This study is important to reduce systematic effects in neutrino oscillation experiments.

Abstract (up) Neutron capture data on intermediate mass nuclei are of key importance to nucleosynthesis in the weak component of the slow neutron capture processes, which occurs in massive stars. The (n,gamma) cross section on Ge-70, which is mainly produced in the s process, was measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Resonance capture kernels were determined up to 40 keV neutron energy and average cross sections up to 300 keV. Stellar cross sections were calculated from kT = 5 keV to kT = 100 keV and are in very good agreement with a previous measurement by Walter and Beer (1985) and recent evaluations. Average cross sections are in agreement with Walter and Beer (1985) over most of the neutron energy range covered, while they are systematically smaller for neutron energies above 150 keV. We have calculated isotopic abundances produced in s-process environments in a 25 solar mass star for two initial metallicities (below solar and close to solar). While the low metallicity model reproduces best the solar system germanium isotopic abundances, the close to solar model shows a good global match to solar system abundances in the range of mass numbers A = 60-80.

Abstract (up) Neutron destruction reactions of the cosmic gamma-ray emitter Al-26 are of importance to determine the amount of Al-26 ejected into our galaxy by supernova explosions and for Al-26 production in asymptotic giant branch stars. We performed a new measurement of the Al-26(n, alpha) reaction up to 160-keV neutron energy at the neutron time-of-flight facilities n_TOF at CERN and GELINA at EC-JRC. We provide strengths for ten resonances, six of them for the first time. We use our data to calculate astrophysical reactivities for stellar temperatures up to 0.7 GK. Our results resolve a discrepancy between the two previous direct measurements of this reaction, and indicate higher stellar destruction rates than the most recently recommended reactivity.

Title Neutron physics of the Re/Os clock. III. Resonance analyses and stellar (n, gamma) cross sections of Os-186,Os-187,Os-188 Type Journal Article

Abstract (up) Neutron resonance analyses have been performed for the capture cross sections of Os-186, Os-187, and Os-188 measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN. Resonance parameters have been extracted up to 5, 3, and 8 keV, respectively, using the SAMMY code for a full R-matrix fit of the capture yields. From these results average resonance parameters were derived by a statistical analysis to provide a comprehensive experimental basis for modeling of the stellar neutron capture rates of these isotopes in terms of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. Consistent calculations for the capture and inelastic reaction channels are crucial for the evaluation of stellar enhancement factors to correct the Maxwellian averaged cross sections obtained from experimental data for the effect of thermally populated excited states. These factors have been calculated for the full temperature range of current scenarios of s-process nucleosynthesis using the combined information of the experimental data in the region of resolved resonances and in the continuum. The consequences of this analysis for the s-process component of the Os-187 abundance and the related impact on the evaluation of the time duration of galactic nucleosynthesis via the Re/Os cosmochronometer are discussed.

Abstract (up) Neutron-induced fission cross sections for Pb-nat and Bi-209 were measured with a white-spectrum neutron source at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight (n_TOF) facility. The experiment, using neutrons from threshold up to 1 GeV, provides the first results for these nuclei above 200 MeV. The cross sections were measured relative to U-235 and U-238 in a dedicated fission chamber with parallel plate avalanche counter detectors. Results are compared with previous experimental data. Upgraded parametrizations of the cross sections are presented, from threshold energy up to 1 GeV. The proposed new sets of fitting parameters improve former results along the whole energy range.

Title Structure of chlorine isotopes populated by heavy ion transfer reactions Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 87 Issue 5 Pages 054322 - 12pp
Keywords
Abstract (up) Neutron-rich chlorine isotopes were populated in the Ar-40 + Pb-208 multiple transfer reaction via the -1p channels in a fragment-gamma coincident measurement employing the Prisma-Clara setup. New gamma transitions have been identified and, together with already available data, level schemes have been revised and compared with the results of large-scale sd-pf shell-model calculations. The evolution of the energy splitting between the s(1/2) and d(3/2) orbitals and the increased mixing of different proton configurations in the populated Cl isotopic chain have been deduced by inspecting the shell-model wave functions.

Title Interplay between single-particle and collective excitations in argon isotopes populated by transfer reactions Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 84 Issue 1 Pages 014325 - 7pp
Keywords
Abstract (up) New gamma transitions have been identified in argon isotopes in (40)Ar + (208)Pb multiple transfer reactions by exploiting, in a fragment-gamma measurement, the new generation of magnetic spectrometers based on trajectory reconstruction coupled to large gamma arrays. The coupling of single-particle degrees of freedom to nuclear vibration quanta was discussed. The interpretation of the newly observed states within a particle-phonon coupling picture was used to consistently follow, via their excitation energies, the evolution of collectivity in odd Ar isotopes. The proposed level schemes are supported by the results of sd-pf shell-model calculations, which have been also employed to evaluate the strength functions of the populated states.

Title Nuclear structure of Te isotopes beyond neutron magic number N=82 Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 103 Issue 3 Pages 034320 - 15pp
Keywords
Abstract (up) Newly observed decay schemes of the nuclei Sb-137 and Sb-138 are reported. The neutron-rich Sb isotopes were produced by the in-flight fragmentation of a U-238 primary beam with an energy of 345 MeV/nucleon. Several new excited states of Te-137 with tentatively assigned spin-parities of (5/2(-)), (9/2(-)), and (7/2) have been established which play an important role in the evolution of neutron levels beyond N = 82. The study of the beta decay of Sb-138 led to a considerable extension of the level scheme of Te-138 including the identification of several nonyrast states. The structure of Te-137 and Te-138 is discussed on the basis of large-scale shell-model calculations performed using two different effective interactions.

Title Theoretical study of the Xi(1620) and Xi(1690) resonances in Xi(c)-> pi(+) MB decays Type Journal Article
Year 2017 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 95 Issue 3 Pages 035212 - 12pp

Abstract (up) Nonleptonic weak decays of Xi(c) into pi(+) and a meson (M)-baryon (B) final state, MB, are analyzed from the viewpoint of probing S = -2 baryon resonances, i.e., Xi(1620) and Xi(1690), of which spin-parity and other properties are not well known. We argue that the weak decay of Xi(c) is dominated by a single quark-line diagram, preferred by the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa coefficient, color recombination factor, the diquark correlation, and the kinematical condition. The decay process has an advantage of being free from meson resonances in the p+ M invariantmass distribution. The invariant mass distribution of the meson-baryon final state is calculated with three different chiral unitary approaches, assuming that the Xi(1620) and Xi(1690) resonances have J(P) = 1/2(-). It is found that a clear peak for the Xi(1690) is seen in the pi Xi and K Lambda spectra. We also suggest that the ratios of the pi Xi, K Lambda, and K Sigma final states are useful to distinguish whether the peak is originated from the Xi(1690) resonance or it is a K Sigma threshold effect.

Abstract (up) Nuclear-medium effects on the weak structure functions F-2(x, Q(2)) and F-3(x, Q(2)) in charged-current neutrino and antineutrino induced deep-inelastic reactions in Pb-208 have been studied. The calculations have been performed in a theoretical model using relativistic nuclear spectral functions which incorporate Fermi motion, binding, and nucleon correlations. We have also included the pion and rho meson cloud contributions calculated from a microscopic model for meson-nucleus self-energies. Using these structure functions, differential scattering cross sections have been obtained and compared with the CERN Hybrid Oscillation Research Apparatus (CHORUS) data. The results for the ratios 2F(i)(Pb)/208F(i)(D), 4F(i)(Pb)/208F(i)(He), 12F(i)(Pb)/208F(i)(C), 16F(i)(Pb)/208F(i)(O), and 56F(i)(Pb)/208F(i)(Fe) (i = 2, 3) have also been obtained and compared with some of the phenomenological fits.
