Title On the Lindemann Criterion for Quantum Clusters at Very Low Temperature Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Journal of Physical Chemistry A Abbreviated Journal (up) J. Phys. Chem. A

Abstract The Lindemann criterion to discern the solid-like or liquid-like nature of a quantum cluster at T = 0 is discussed. A critical analysis of current Lindemann parameters is presented and a new parameter is proposed that is appropriate to study quantum clusters made of identical particles. A simple model wave function is introduced to fix the range of variation of these parameters. The model presents two extreme limits that correspond to either a liquid-like or a solid-like system; besides, it fulfills the Bose symmetry and also permits evaluations without symmetrization. Variational and diffusion Monte Carlo calculations are also performed for clusters of spinless bosons interacting through Lennard-Jones potentials. It is shown that the liquid-like or solid-like character of quantum clusters at zero temperature cannot be simply established in terms of a single parameter.

Title Toward a Density Functional Description of Liquid pH(2) Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Journal of Physical Chemistry A Abbreviated Journal (up) J. Phys. Chem. A
Volume 115 Issue 25 Pages 6910-6917
Keywords
Abstract A finite-temperature density functional approach to describe the properties of parahydrogen in the liquid vapor coexistence region is presented. The first proposed functional is zero-range, where the density-gradient term is adjusted so as to reproduce the surface tension of the liquid vapor interface at low temperature. The second functional is finite-range and, while it is fitted to reproduce bulk pH(2) properties only, it is shown to yield surface properties in good agreement with experiments. These functionals are used to study the surface thickness of the liquid vapor interface, the wetting transition of parahydrogen on a planar Rb model surface, and homogeneous cavitation in bulk liquid pH(2).

Title Fritzsch neutrino mass matrix from S-3 symmetry Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Journal of Physics G Abbreviated Journal (up) J. Phys. G
Volume 38 Issue 1 Pages 015003 - 10pp
Keywords
Abstract We present an extension of the standard model (SM) based on the discrete flavor symmetry S-3 which gives a neutrino mass matrix with two-zero texture of Fritzsch type and nearly diagonal charged lepton mass matrix. The model is compatible with the normal hierarchy only and predicts sin(2) theta(13) approximate to 0.01 at the best-fit values of solar and atmospheric parameters and maximal leptonic CP violation.

Title Three-particle correlations in QCD jets and beyond Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Journal of Physics G Abbreviated Journal (up) J. Phys. G
Volume 38 Issue 11 Pages 115007 - 34pp
Keywords
Abstract In this paper, we present a detailed study of three-particle correlations in quark and gluon jets. We give theoretical results for this observable in the double logarithmic approximation and the modified leading logarithmic approximation. In both resummation schemes, we use the formalism of the generating functional and solve the evolution equations analytically from the steepest descent evaluation of the one-particle distribution. In addition, in this paper we include predictions beyond the limiting spectrum approximation and study this observable near the hump of the single inclusive distribution. We thus provide a further test of the local parton hadron duality and make predictions for the LHC. The computation of higher rank correlators is presented in the double logarithmic approximation and shown to be rather cumbersome.

Title Exploiting symmetries for weight matrix design in CT imaging Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Mathematical and Computer Modelling Abbreviated Journal (up) Math. Comput. Model.
Volume 54 Issue 7-8 Pages 1655-1664

Abstract In this paper we propose several methods of constructing the system matrix (SM) of a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner with two objectives: (1) to construct SMs in the shortest possible time and store them in an ordinary PC without losing quality, (2) to analyze the possible applications of the proposed method to 3D, taking into account SMs' sizes, computing time and reconstructed image quality. In order to build the SM, we propose two new field of view (FOV) pixellation schemes, based on a polar coordinate system (polar grid) by taking advantage of the polar rotation symmetries of CT devices. Comparisons between the SMs proposed are performed using two phantom and a real CT-simulator images. Global error, contrast, noise and homogeneity of the reconstructed images are discussed.
