Title Predicting the baryon asymmetry with degenerate right-handed neutrinos Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 11 Issue 11 Pages 153 - 37pp
Keywords Baryo-and Leptogenesis; Sterile or Heavy Neutrinos; Early Universe Particle Physics
Abstract We consider the generation of a baryon asymmetry in an extension of the Standard Model with two singlet Majorana fermions that are degenerate above the electroweak phase transition. The model can explain neutrino masses as well as the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry, for masses of the heavy singlets below the electroweak scale. The only physical CP violating phases in the model are those in the PMNS mixing matrix, i.e. the Dirac phase and a Majorana phase that enter light neutrino observables. We present an accurate analytic approximation for the baryon asymmetry in terms of CP flavour invariants, and derive the correlations with neutrino observables. We demonstrate that the measurement of CP violation in neutrino oscillations as well as the mixings of the heavy neutral leptons with the electron, muon and tau flavours suffice to pin down the matter-antimatter asymmetry from laboratory measurements.

Title Measuring the sterile neutrino mass in spallation source and direct detection experiments Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 12 Issue 12 Pages 096 - 27pp
Keywords Neutrino Interactions; Non-Standard Neutrino Properties; Sterile or Heavy Neutrinos
Abstract We explore the complementarity of direct detection (DD) and spallation source (SS) experiments for the study of sterile neutrino physics. We focus on the sterile baryonic neutrino model: an extension of the Standard Model that introduces a massive sterile neutrino with couplings to the quark sector via a new gauge boson. In this scenario, the inelastic scattering of an active neutrino with the target material in both DD and SS experiments gives rise to a characteristic nuclear recoil energy spectrum that can allow for the reconstruction of the neutrino mass in the event of a positive detection. We first derive new bounds on this model based on the data from the COHERENT collaboration on CsI and LAr targets, which we find do not yet probe new areas of the parameter space. We then assess how well future SS experiments will be able to measure the sterile neutrino mass and mixings, showing that masses in the range similar to 15 – 50 MeV can be reconstructed. We show that there is a degeneracy in the measurement of the sterile neutrino mixing that substantially affects the reconstruction of parameters for masses of the order of 40 MeV. Thanks to their lower energy threshold and sensitivity to the solar tau neutrino flux, DD experiments allow us to partially lift the degeneracy in the sterile neutrino mixings and considerably improve its mass reconstruction down to 9 MeV. Our results demonstrate the excellent complementarity between DD and SS experiments in measuring the sterile neutrino mass and highlight the power of DD experiments in searching for new physics in the neutrino sector.

Title New physics searches using ProtoDUNE and the CERN SPS accelerator Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 01 Issue 1 Pages 134 - 18pp
Keywords New Light Particles; Sterile or Heavy Neutrinos
Abstract The exquisite capabilities of liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers make them ideal to search for weakly interacting particles in Beyond the Standard Model scenarios. Given their location at CERN the ProtoDUNE detectors may be exposed to a flux of such particles, produced in the collisions of 400 GeV protons (extracted from the Super Proton Synchrotron accelerator) on a target. Here we point out the interesting possibilities that such a setup offers to search for both long-lived unstable particles (Heavy Neutral Leptons, axion-like particles, etc) and stable particles (e.g. light dark matter, or millicharged particles). Our results show that, under conservative assumptions regarding the expected luminosity, this setup has the potential to improve over present bounds for some of the scenarios considered. This could be done within a short timescale, using facilities that are already in place at CERN, and without interfering with the experimental program in the North Area at CERN.

Title Linear seesaw mechanism from dark sector Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 09 Issue 9 Pages 046 - 18pp
Keywords Lepton Flavour Violation (charged); Multi-Higgs Models; Neutrino Mixing; Sterile or Heavy Neutrinos
Abstract We propose a minimal model where a dark sector seeds neutrino mass generation radiatively within the linear seesaw mechanism. Neutrino masses are calculable, since treelevel contributions are forbidden by symmetry. They arise from spontaneous lepton number violation by a small Higgs triplet vacuum expectation value. Lepton flavour violating processes e.g. μ-> e gamma can be sizeable, despite the tiny neutrino masses. We comment also on dark-matter and collider implications.

Title Probing heavy neutrino magnetic moments at the LHC using long-lived particle searches Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 07 Issue 7 Pages 153 - 44pp
Keywords Neutrino Interactions; Non-Standard Neutrino Properties; Sterile or Heavy Neutrinos; Lepton Flavour Violation (charged)
Abstract We explore long-lived particle (LLP) searches using non-pointing photons at the LHC as a probe for sterile-to-sterile and active-to-sterile transition magnetic dipole moments of sterile neutrinos. We consider heavy sterile neutrinos with masses ranging from a few GeV to several hundreds of GeV. We discuss transition magnetic dipole moments using the Standard Model effective field theory and low-energy effective field theory extended by sterile neutrinos (NRSMEFT and NRLEFT) and also provide a simplified UV-complete model example. LLP searches at the LHC using non-pointing photons will probe sterile-to-sterile dipole moments two orders of magnitude below the current best constraints from LEP, while an unprecedented sensitivity to sterile neutrino mass of about 700 GeV is expected for active-to-sterile dipole moments. For the UV model example with one-loop transition magnetic moments, the searches for charged lepton flavour violating processes in synergy with LLP searches at the LHC can probe new physics at several TeV mass scales and provide valuable insights into the lepton flavour structure of new physics couplings.

Title Up-scattering production of a sterile fermion at DUNE: complementarity with spallation source and direct detection experiments Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 10 Issue 10 Pages 032 - 36pp
Keywords Neutrino Interactions; New Light Particles; Sterile or Heavy Neutrinos
Abstract We investigate the possible production of a MeV-scale sterile fermion through the up-scattering of neutrinos on nuclei and atomic electrons at different facilities. We consider a phenomenological model that adds a new fermion to the particle content of the Standard Model and we allow for all possible Lorentz-invariant non-derivative interactions (scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, axial-vector and tensor) of neutrinos with electrons and first-generation quarks. We first explore the sensitivity of the DUNE experiment to this scenario, by simulating elastic neutrino-electron scattering events in the near detector. We consider both options of a standard and a tau-optimized neutrino beams, and investigate the impact of a mobile detector that can be moved off-axis with respect to the beam. Next, we infer constraints on the typical coupling, new fermion and mediator masses from elastic neutrino-electron scattering events induced by solar neutrinos in two current dark matter direct detection experiments, XENONnT and LZ. Under the assumption that the new mediators couple also to first-generation quarks, we further set constraints on the up-scattering production of the sterile fermion using coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data from the COHERENT experiment. Moreover, we set additional constraints assuming that the sterile fermion may decay within the detector. We finally compare our results and discuss how these facilities are sensitive to different regions of the relevant parameter space due to kinematics arguments and can hence provide complementary information on the up-scattering production of a sterile fermion.

Title Completing the one-loop νSMEFT renormalization group evolution Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 10 Issue 10 Pages 212 - 23pp
Keywords Lepton Flavour Violation (charged); SMEFT; Sterile or Heavy Neutrinos
Abstract In this work we consider the Standard Model Effective Field Theory extended with right-handed neutrinos, the nu SMEFT, and calculate the full set of one-loop anomalous dimensions that are proportional to Yukawa couplings. These contributions are particularly relevant when symmetry-protected low scale seesaw models are embeded in the SMEFT, since large neutrino Yukawa couplings are expected. By combining our results with the already available gauge anomalous dimensions, we provide the complete set of one-loop renormalization group evolution equations for the dimension six nu SMEFT. As a possible phenomenological implication of our results, we discuss the sensitivity of lepton flavor-violating observables to nu SMEFT operators, focusing on the more sensitive μ-> e transitions.

Title Model independent bounds on heavy sterile neutrinos from the angular distribution of B → D*ℓν decays Type Journal Article
Year 2025 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 01 Issue 1 Pages 040 - 23pp
Keywords Bottom Quarks; Semi-Leptonic Decays; Sterile or Heavy Neutrinos
Abstract In this paper we study the bounds that can be inferred on New Physics couplings to heavy sterile neutrinos N from the recent measurements performed by the Belle collaboration of the angular analysis of B -> D l nu l decays, with l = e, mu. Indeed, a sterile neutrino N may lead to competing B -> D & lowast;& ell;N<overline> decays and Belle might have measured an incoherent sum of these two independent channels. After reviewing the theoretical formalism required to describe this phenomenon in full generality, we first perform a bump hunt in the Mmiss2 Belle distribution to search for evidences of an additional massive neutrino. We found in such a way a small hint at Mmiss2 similar to (354 MeV)2. However, the Belle angular analysis is sensitive to N masses up to O(50 MeV), preventing us to further inspect this hint. Nevertheless, we study the potential impact of this additional channel in the allowed mass range on the measured angular distributions and extract model-independent bounds on the new-physics couplings which could mediate such an interaction. In particular, in the mass window here inspected, we obtain the most stringent bounds for vector and left-handed scalar operators to date.

Title Probing conventional and new physics at the ESS with coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering Type Journal Article
Year 2025 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 05 Issue 5 Pages 064 - 49pp
Keywords Neutrino Interactions; Non-Standard Neutrino Properties; Sterile or Heavy Neutrinos
Abstract We explore the potential of the European Spallation Source (ESS) in probing physics within and beyond the Standard Model (SM), based on future measurements of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE nu NS). We consider two SM physics cases, namely the weak mixing angle and the nuclear radius. Regarding physics beyond the SM, we focus on neutrino generalized interactions (NGIs) and on various aspects of sterile neutrino and sterile neutral lepton phenomenology. For this, we explore the violation of lepton unitarity, active-sterile oscillations as well as interesting upscattering channels such as the sterile dipole portal and the production of sterile neutral leptons via NGIs. The projected ESS sensitivities are estimated by performing a statistical analysis considering the various CE nu NS detectors and expected backgrounds. We find that the enhanced statistics achievable in view of the highly intense ESS neutrino beam, will offer a drastic improvement in the current constraints obtained from existing CE nu NS measurements. Finally, we discuss how the ESS has the potential to provide the leading CE nu NS-based constraints, complementing also further experimental probes and astrophysical observations.

Title Constraining non-standard interactions of the neutrino with Borexino Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 12 Issue 12 Pages 079 - 21pp
Keywords Neutrino Physics; Solar and Atmospheric Neutrinos; Beyond Standard Model
Abstract We use the Borexino 153.6 ton.year data to place constraints on non-standard neutrino-electron interactions, taking into account the uncertainties in the Be-7 solar neutrino flux and the mixing angle theta(23), and backgrounds due to Kr-85 and Bi-210 beta-decay. We find that the bounds are comparable to existing bounds from all other experiments. Further improvement can be expected in Phase II of Borexino due to the reduction in the Kr-85 background.
